Description

S. BYRA M.
MSH-HOLDER.
UNITED STATES PATENT SETE BYRAM, 0F FENTON, MICHIGAN.
- IMPROVEMENT IN S`ASHHOLDERS.
Specification forming part of LettersPatent No. 183,637, dated October 24, 1876; application led June 2, 1876.
To all whom -t may concern:
Be it known that I, SETH BYRAM,'of Fenton, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Sash- Holders, of which the following is a specification:
The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in sash-holders of that class in which the sash is supported by the lateral pressure of a frictionpad in the sash-stile against the Window-jamb; and it consists in the peculiar means for retractin g the frictionpad, as more fully hereinafter explained.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the stile of a sash fitted with my improved self-acting supporter. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and also of the other stile.
In the drawing, A A', respectively, represent the right and left side stiles of a Windowsash. 1n the outer edge ofthe stileA is mortised a recess to receive a Wooden pad-plate, B, faced with a layer, d, of sheetrnbber. A similar strip, el', is tacked onto the face of the stile A. 4The frictional or holding power of the rubber prevents it from slipping down under the Weight of the sash when lightly pressed against the jambs of the frame.
The pad-plate is set out from the face of the stile A by means of spiral springs b, interposed between it and the bottom of the recess, in which there is mortised another and smaller recess, to receive a pinion, c, mounted on a shaft, d, journaled through to the front of the stile A, its outer end being Hush with the face thereof, and squared to receive a key by which to turn it. Preferably, the outer part of the shaft d is journaled through a countersunk bushing, e, having a ange at its outer end, which prevents the stile from being marred by the barrel of the key.
C is a link-bar pivoted to the back of the pad-plate, with avtoothed rack, el, on its under edge, which rack engages with the pinion c, by rotating which (by means of the key) the pad-plate may be withdrawn from contact with the window-frame, when the sash can be raised or lowered.
If preferred, the shaft may be fitted with a crank; but the keyvis preferable, especially upon the upper sash, where a crank would likely catch the lower sash-rail.
The rubber strip d', binding against the frame, does not allow that side of the sash to twist and sag when the sash is up.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination, with the padplate B, of
the shaft d, pinion c, and toothed link C, for retracting the same, constructed and arranged substantially as described and shown.
SETH BYRAM. Witnesses:
H. F. EBERTS, H. S. SPRAGUE.
