Description
vmuessm mag/ N-FEIERS. PHOTO-LITNQGRAFHER, WASHINGTON D C.
rrED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY MALIN, OF PLEASANTVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CROQUET-MALLETS.
specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,582, dated October 24, 1876; application filed August 14, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY MALIN, of Pleasantville, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Croquet-Mallet, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a side view of a croquet-mallet partly in section.
M y inven tion relates to an improved croquetmallet that will not bruise the balls, and make them last much longer, while it requires a lighter stroke in playing.
The'invention consists of a mallet with rubber caps or facings at the ends, as hereinafter described.
In the drawing, A represents a croquetmallet of the usual construction, which is provided at the ends with which the balls are struck with rubber facings or cappieces B. The rubber caps form a protecting cushion not only to the mallet but also to the balls, so that mallet and balls are not bruised or injured, and hold out much longer than with the common mallet. lhe caps B are attached to the inwardly-tapered ends of the mallet by means of circumferential recesses, forming an annular dovetail tenon, O. The force of the stroke of the mallet is softened by the rubber caps, and a more agreeable and less noisy playing of the game made possible therewith.
I am aware that it is not, broadly, new to provide croquet-mallets with elastic, caps, forming the entire strikingsurface.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A croquet mallet head, A, provided on its striking face or faces with an annular dovetailtenon, O, in combination with the rubber cap B, having a corresponding-shaped mortise fitting said tenon, substantially as described.
HARRY MALIN.
