Description

J'. BRINKERHOF-F.
METALLIC STRIPS FOR FENCES; No.183,5'31. Patented Qct.24,1876.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB BRINKERHOFF, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC STRIPS FOR FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l S3,531,dated October 24, 1876; application filed August 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, JACOB BRINKERHOFF,
of Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State tion.
This invention relates to fences, the panels of which are metallic; and it consists in the bars or strips forming the panels being twisted in opposite directions, whereby the same may contract and expand by the action of the heat and cold without being broken or pulling up the post, and whereby the slack in the bars or strips may be takenup, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
- 1n the annexed drawing, the figure represents a side elevation of the twisted bar or strip.
A represents the fence-post, and O represents a device to fasten the bars or strips to the post, to which fastening device no claim is made by me. which is provided with spurs D, and any desired number may be used to form the panel of a fence. These strips or bars are twisted in opposite directions, as shown.
B represents a strip or bar,
In putting up a fence after the posts are set the strips or bars are fastened to every second, third, or fourth post, as may be desired, in a straight form; then, by means of a suitable device to clamp the strips or bars, the strips or bars are twisted between these posts, where they are so fastened and secured to the remaining posts. This twisting process between the two fastened portions of the bars or strips makes a twist upon one side of the point where it is twisted invone direction, and upon the other side in an opposite direction, as shown.
The advantage gained by this is that all the slack in the strips or bars is taken up, provision is made for expansion and contraction, and the spurs or barbs are turned in different directions.
Having thus fully described my invention, I
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The strip or bar B for metallic panels for fences, twisted in opposite directions, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J AGOB BRINKERHOFF.
