SHAKER ARM Filed Feb. 11, 1929 Patented Dec. 1, 1931 narran erases Partnr orties ROBERT F. DARBY, F CHICAGO, ILLNOIS, ASSGNO T0 AMERICAN STEEL FOUNIDRIES,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOS, A CORPORATION OF NEVJ JERSEY SHAKER ARM Application led February 11, 19.29,
rFhis invention pertains to grate assemblies, and more particularly to shaker arms associated With said assemblies.
In grate assemblies, particularly those ofl the table type, it is very important to provide a shaker arm which Will satisfactorily perform its Work. As Will be appreciated, the Whole grate assembly is subjected to hard usage with the result sometimes `that parts are broken and mustbe replaced. Heretofore dif'liculties have been encountered in selecting an entirely satisfactory shaker arm which n'nist be inexpensive and capable of being conveniently located in such a manner as Will not affect the strength of the parts of the assembly nor the draft of the assembly in operation.
lt is therefore an object of this invention to provide a shaker arm separable from the grat assembly, one Which is sturdy, readily applied and one which fulfills all requirements of service and manufacture. ,Y
Linother object is to provide a shaker arm so constructed as to be readily applied to eX- isting grate assemblies as Well as to specially designed assemblies.
A further object is to provide a shaker arm for grate assemblies Which may be applied to the assemblies at convenient points along the length thereof.
Still further object is to provide a shaker arm Which While adapted for a plurality of fastening means is yet arranged to be fastened as a right or left through the same fastening means.
With these and various' other objects in view, the invention may consist ofk certain novel. features of construction and operation, as .vill be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specification, drawings and claims appended hereto.
In the drawings, which illustrate an elnbodiment of the device and wherein like reference characters are used to designate like parts Serial No. 338,981.
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a grate bar support, showing the application of a shaker arm thereto;
' Figure 2 is a sectional top plan View of the assembly illustrated in Figure 1, the same being taken substantially in the plane as indicated by the line 2 2 of Figure 1;
--Figure 3 is a sectional end elevation through the grate supporting frame, the same 'being taken substantially in the plane as indicated by the line 3 3 of Figure 2;
Figure t is a fragmentary side elevation of a-different form of grate bar support, showing the application of a'modied form of shaker arm thereto;
Figure 5 is a sectional top plan view of the modified form of shaker arm, the same being taken substantially in the plane as indicated by the line 5 5 of Figure 4l; and
` Figure 6 is a sectional end Yelevation through the modified form of grate supporting frame, the saine being taken substantiaL ly in the plane as indicated by the line 6 6 of Figure 5.
Referring first of all to the form of shaker arm illustrated in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, which shaker arm is adapted for use VWith a supporting frame of a grate bar structure wherein a single' longitudinal rib is utilized, this single rib 10 of the support is shown with the oppositely extending transverse securing lugs 12, said rib 10 being provided With longitudinal spaced apertures 14. The
shaker arm is provided with a vshank 16,V
shown of substantially arcuate shape, the end thereof being provided with an aperture 18 for the reception of actuating means, such as a link, and said shank terminates in a bifurcated head portion 2O provided with upwardly extending jaws 22, each of said jaws eX- tending in opposite directions. being provided With sloping portions24, the plane of which intersects at the top 26 of the head', being so formed for foundr-y purposes.A Each of said jaws is provided with an aperture adapted to register With the respective apertures 14 and to receive securing means, such as the rivets 2S, securely fastening said shaker arm to the frame, it bein understood that a base portion 30 oi' the bifurcated head may contact the bottom of the rib 10, providing a tighter fit.
TWith this construction, wherein a plan of the aWs is substantially Z-shaped, it Will be seen that the shaker arm may be assembled for any position, that is, as either a right or left as desired, in spite of the fact that a plurality or" fastening means is used, one of said fastening means being` used for each jaW.
Referring now to the modification illustrated in Figures 4 to 6, it Will be seen that the supporting` frame 50 of the grate bar assembly comprises spaced longitudinally eX- tending members 52 and 54, the members 52 and 54 being provided With apertures 56 and 58 disposed on the same level but in staggered relation to each other, The shaker arm 60 is or any desired shape, such as arcuate, the shank G2 being provided with an aperture 64 tor the attachment of an actuating means, such as a link, the opposite end of said shank terminating in a head portion 66 provided with spaced oppositely extending lugs 68 and 70. The head of the shaker arm is sub stantially ZVv-shaped in plan, as shown in Fivure 5, and each of the lugs is provided with apertures 72 and 74 respectively adapted to register with apertures V56 and 58 whereby securing means, such as rivets 76, may be inserted into the registered apertures for securing the shaker arm in operative position with respect to thevgrate assembly. As before, the disaosition ot' the lugs 68 and 70 makesit possible for the shaker arm to be assembled with the grate bar as a right or atleft as desired, though a plurality of fastening means between the shaker arm and grate are used,
thus forming a very advantageous structure.
With the construction shown, it Will be ap'- preciated that a very compa-ct and serviceable form of shaker bar and assembly is provided, and it is to be understood that l do not Wish to be limited by the exact embodiment of the device shown, which is merely by Way of illustration and not limitation, as various and other forms of the device Will of course be apparent to those skilled in the art Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims. p f
I claiml. In a grat-e bar assembly, the combination of a support having spaced apertures disposed therein,l a shaker arm for moving said support, said arm having spaced jaws tor embracing Aengag ,e1nent with said support, each ot said jaws being provided with an aperture adapted to register with one of' said iirst named apertures, and securing means disposed through registered apertures.
:2. In a grate bar assembly, the combination ot a support having spaced apertures disposed therein, a shaker arm for moving said support, said arm having members disposed thereon forming a substantial Z- shaped member in plan View, said members being provided with apertures adapted to register With said first named apertures, and securing means disposed through the registered apertures.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 26th day of January, 1929.
