My invention relates to traveling grate stokers, and has special reference to means for preventing excess blowing of air and excess leakage of fuel at the sides of the grate of such stokers.
An object of the invention is to provide novel and improved sealing means of this character.
Another object of my invention is to provide means of the character indicated that is self-adjusting as the grate contracts by wear and expands by heat.
Another object of the invention is to provide means for yieldingly maintaining suitable sealing members in engagement with the sides of the grate.
The several features of the invention, whereby the above-mentioned and other objects may be attained, will be clearly understood from the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view, partly diagrammatical, of a traveling grate stoker embodying the features of the invention in their preferred form;
Fig. 2 is a view partly in section, taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, showing particularly sealing members and associated parts ofthe stoker;
Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on the line Jr-4t of Fig. 1.
The stoker illustrated in the drawings is provided with the usual chain grate 2 and combustion chamber having longitudinal side walls 4: each of which is supported by outer and inner frames 3 and 5, respectively, that are spaced apart As shown, novel and improved means is provided for sealing the longitudinal sides of the upper run of the grate to prevent excess blowing of air and excess leakage of fuel at the sides of the grate. This means, in the preferred embodiment of my invention, comprises a series of side sealing bars 6 that are arranged end to end and ret upon a supporting shelf 8 formed on each of the frames 5. Each sealing member 6 has a fiat portion 12 at the upper part of its inner side that is adapted to be engaged by outwardly projecting ribs 14 on the outer links of the chain. One end of each of the sealing members 6 is provided with a longitudinally projecting portion 16 that extends over the outer side of the adjacent end portion of the adjacent sealing member. A steel bar or strip 18 has its inner portion resting upon the outer portion of the top surface of the sealing members of each series and has its outer portion set into and resting upon the bottom wall of a longitudinally extending groove 20 in the frame 5. A ledge plate 22 is mounted in each of the longitudinal side walls 4 and extends over the top of the associated frame 5 and the steel strip 18, and has a depending rib portion 24 that is arranged adjacent the inner side of the strip 18 with its bottom side arranged in close proximity to the inner portion of the top surfaces of the sealing members 6.
As shown. means is provided for maintaining the sealing members 6 in sealing engagement with the ribs 14 of the outer links of the chain grate. This means comprises a series of rods 26 arranged at each side of the grate. These rods are mounted to slide in horizontal apertures in the upper portion of the associated frame 5, an angle iron 28 mounted on said frame, and an angle iron 80 mounted on the top of the frame 3, the inner ends of the rods 26 being arranged in engagement with the outer sides of the overlapping end portions 16 of the sealing members 6. A collar 34 is secured on each rod 26 and is provided with an annular groove 86 which receives the bifurcated end of one arm of a bell crank 38 which is pivotally mounted on a bracket 40 secured to the frame 3. The other arm of the bell crank 38 carries a weight 42 which is adjustable longitudinally of the arm.
Vith this construction it will be apparent that as the grate contacts by Wear and expands by heat that the rods 26 which are pressed inwardly by the Weights 4:2 will serve to maintain the sealing members 6 in scaling engagement with the sides of the upper run of the grate so that there will be no danger of excess blowing of air or sitting of fuel adjacent the sides of the grate. The pressure of the sealing members 6 on the sides of the grate may be varied by adjusting the Weights l2. it will also be apparent that the parts of the sealing means including the sealing members 6 and the steel strip 18 may be easily removed and replaced. The arrangement of the sealing members, strips 18 and the ledge plate prevents leakage o1 air above the sealing members.
As will be evident to those skilled in the art, my invention permits of various modifications without departing from the spirit thereof or the scope of the appended claims.
ll hat I claim is:
1. A traveling grate stolrer having, in combination, side sealing members arranged adjacent at least one of the sides of the upper run of the grate, a shelf on which said side sealing members are mounted, a strip arranged longitudinally of said side sealing members and having its inner portion resting upon the outer portion of the top side of said side sealing members, a ledge plate mounted in the furnace Wall and having its inner portion extending over and in close proximity to the inner portion of the top sides of said sealing members and adjacent the inner side of said strip, said sealing members being mounted to be adjusted toward said side of the grate.
2. A traveling grate stoker having, in combination, side sealing members arranged end to end adjacent at least one side of the upper run of the grate one end of each member lapping over the outer side of the ad'- jacent end of the adjacent member, and means engaging each member substantially at said lapping end thereof for adjusting the members toward the side of the grate.
8. A traveling grate stoker having, in combination. side sealing members arranged end to end adjacent at least one side of the upper run of the grate, one end of each member lapping over the outer side of the adjacent end of the adjacent member, and means engaging each member substantially at said lapping end thereof for yieldingly pressing said members toward the side of the grate.
