This invention relates to sliding windows and more especially to sliding windows for automobile and other vehicles.
It is an object of the invention to provide a rotary handle mechanism whereby the window can be raised or lowered to its full extent by a half-turn of the handle as distinguished from many types of window operating handles requiring a plurality of turns of the handle.
Another object is to provide a window operating mechanism which will permit of the window being depressed by pressure of a hand or arm applied directly to the top edge of the window so as to facilitate such action by the extended arm of a driver of a vehicle making a stop or turn signal.
Another object is to provide a spring balanced sliding sash combined with a rotary handle device which is so connected to the window that the device operates selectively to raise or to lower the window from either extended position thereof.
Another object is to provide a rotary window operating device with means to lock or latch the sash in fully raised or closed position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a window operating device of simple, substantial, effective, and reliable action, and which is of low cost of production and installation. And in this connection an object is to provide a window operating mechanism which can be readily installed in place of other stock mechanism when so desired with out material alteration, or change of the car door or body wall.
The invention consists in certain advancements in this art as set forth in the ensuing disclosure and having, with the above, addi tional objects and advantages, and whose construction, combination and details of means, and the manner of operation Wlll be made manifest in the description of the herewith illustrative embodiment; it being understood that modifications, variations and adaptations may be resorted to within the scope, principle and spirlt of the inventlon as it is more directly claimed herelnafter.

A vehicle door structure is shown as including a frame work 2 having a guideway 3 in which is slidable a glass pane 4 whose bottom edge is mounted in a rail 5.
' To about the center of the rail is attached a cord or cable 6 running down to a pulley 7 hung in the frame 2 and from which the cable extends up and is connected to a large pulley 8 having a shaft passing through the door pannel 9 and connected to a rotary handle 10 which when the window 4 is in its upper position can be latched by a latch-dog 11 engageable with a fixed keeper 12; thus preventing the window from being lowered until the latch is released.
There is also connected to the pulley 8 a cord or cable 13 which is connected to a drop bar let fixed to the rail 5; the cord 13 being reeled off the pulley when the sash is moved downward while the cord 6 is then winding on the pulley 8, this cord unwinding when i the window moves up.
The window or sash a is counter-balanced by a spring device 15 which is connected by a cord or cable 16 to a rod 17 which is fixed to the rail 5.
Therefore it will be seen that the operation is as follows: assuming that the sash is in uppermost position with the handle 10 in corresponding position then by swinging the handle to the right for about a half turn, this will wind up the cord 6 and cause it to pull down the sash in the guideways 3. During such lowering movement drop-bar 14 unreels the cord 13, an amount equal to the reeled cord 6: it being understood that the spring device 16 substantially counterbalances the window. To raise the window the handle motion is reversed and the cord 13 is reeled up, therefore acting through the drop-bar is to push the window up. It is understood 9 that the length of the stroke of the window is about equal to one-ha1f the circumference of the'winding pulley 8, therefore effecting a full raising or lowering of the window by a half turn of the pulley.
What is claimed isi The combination with a vehicle frame including a wall structure having inner and outer sill elements between which is a slidable glass sash, of a spring balance fixed under the outer sill base, a drop bar fixed to the bottom of the said sash and having an outturned foot under and connected to said spring balance, a winding pulley disposed under the inner sill and having a crank in the inner wall, and an operating cord passing over the top of and fixed directly to the crank pulley and attached to the said sash and having a reverse loop; whereby operation of the crank pulley in about degrees will efi'ect a full up or full down stroke of the sash.
