"U1\TITED STATES PATENT OFFIcE.
ADAM CUNNINGHAM, OF BILLERIOA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO DANIEL S. KIMBALL, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED DESK AND SEWING-MACHINE COVER.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,286, dated October 17, 1876; application filed To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADAM (JUNNtNGHAM, of Billerica, in the county of Middlesex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Writing-Desks, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing.
My invention consists in a writingdesk provided with a recess to receive that part of a sewing-machine which is above the sewingmachine table, as and for the purpose hereinafterdescribed.
The accompanying drawing is an oblique view of a wiitingdesk, having a part of the end broken away to show the recess.
The-desk A has the usual pigeon-holes H H H to receive bills, a drawer, J, to hold paper, a tray, K, for pen-holders and pencils, a mirror, L, slips M M for books of account,
' and boxes S T U for pens, ink, wafers, sealingwax, &c. The cover V, hinged on the back edge, shuts down flat over the boxes S T U. The hinged writingtablcX rests, when in use, upon the cover V, forming an inclined plane, and, when not in use, is locked by the lock Y, concealing the mirror, pigeon-holes, drawer, 860., all in the usual manner.
July 27, 1876.
A recess, R, in the bottom of the desk A occupies the space below the shelf on which the drawer J slides between the wooden backing of the mirror L and the boxes S T U in front, and the back of the desk behind, between, and below the slips M M. This recess R is of such size and shape that the desk may be set out on the table of a sewing-machine, over said machine, iike an ordinary sewingmachine cover, and in this position used for all the purposes of a writing-desk. The desk may be secured to the sewing-machine table by the bent lugs O on the back and the lock Z on the front of the same. 7
The writing-desk above described is especially useful for dress-makers, milliners, and other sewing-women, who are obliged to be economical in the matters of space, money, and furniture, as by its use the ordinary sewingmachine cover may be dispensed with.
I claim as my invention The writing-desk A, provided with the recess R, as and for the purpose described.
ADAM CUNNINGHAM.
