Description
UNITED v STATES PA'rnN FFICE.
CHARLES A. FRENCH, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN MATCH-SPLINTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,257, dated October 17, 1876; application filed August 5, 1876.
marked thereon, similar letters indicating corresponding parts in the different figures.
Figure 1 represents a longitudinal section of the match, and Fig. 2 a transverse section v on the line or :0 of Fig. 1.
The object of this invention is to render the wood forming the body of the match more easily ignited by the burning of the frictional igniting composition upon its end; and it con sists in cutting a series-of shavings around the body of the match, near its head, Without entirely disengaging them therefrom,- as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and then distinctly pointed out in the claim.
Much difficulty arises in'using the common friction-matches from the inability of the burning frictional compound generally used to raise the temperature of the body of the match to the blazing-point. To obviatethis defect they have been coated with inflammable materials, such as sulphur,.stearine, and
wax, or saturated with inflammable liquids. These methods have all proved more or less defective, and are expensive. In order to avoid these evils, I surround the body b of the match with a series of shavings, c c c, in any desired number, the shavings being so cut that. while their outer end is free, and turns away from the body, the other end will not be disengaged from the stick, so that as the light outer ends of the shavings become quickly heated and burst into a blaze, they Will, as they consume, draw nearer to the body, and
assist in raising its temperature to the blazing-point. They are further useful in pre' venting its easy extinguishment by currents of air.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent the following:
A friction-match surrounded by a series of partially-disengaged shavings, substantially as and for the purpose hereinbefore' set forth.
