Patented Got. 27, 1931 NAPOLEON GIARD, 0F ROUGEMONT, QUEBEC, CANADA TABLE v Application filed March 19, 1929. Serial No. 348,255.
The present invention relates to improvements in table construction and has particular reference to tables of the extension type embodying combined rigid and flexible ad justable top portions.
An important object of the invention is the provision of a table of the above character constructed so that the rigid top portion can be adjusted, when the top is retracted, tightly againstand in alignment with a fixed top portion of the table.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a table of the above character constructed so that the flexible portion of the top is loosely connected to the rigid portion to enable the inner edge of the rigid top portion to be positioned tightly against a fixed top bar of the table.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved table of the above type designed so that the flexible top portion will be .durably supported in horizontal alignment with the rigid portion when the top is extended.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent as the description progresses.
V a table top showing a modified construction,
Figure 6 is a similar view of the top in a retracted position, and
Figure 7 is a transverse section taken on the line 7-7 of Figure 5.
With particular reference to Figures 1 to 4 inclusive, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of the invention, the numeral 10 generally designates a fixed top bar of the bars table, usually extending transversely between the side panels 11. The present invention is applicable to tables having horizontally extensible tops, either including two sections extendingfrom opposed ends of the table, wherein the top bar 10 is disposed in a central transverse position between the extensible top sections, or tables employing a single top section wherein the bar 10 is disposed on one end of the table.
The movable top section embodies a rigid portion 12 supported for horizontal sliding movement between the side panels 11. Connected with the rigid portion 12, for adjustable movement, is a'flexible portion 13 embodying a series of transversely elongated connected in continuous arrangement by means of a pair of flexible strips 14:. The strips 14 "are extended beyond the bars at one end and are attached to the inner edge portion of the rigid top member 12. The flexible top portion is rollable about pair 7 ofrollers 15 j ournaled at the sides of the table to support the ends of the bars 13.
Heretofore, the connecting strips 14 have been attached to the rigid top portion 12,,"
right to the inner edge thereof, preventing tight closure between the inner edge of the rigid portion and the stationary table portion 10 and'forming an objectionable space therebetween. An essential feature of the present invention, is the connection of the flexible strips 14 with the rigid top portion in such manner as to leave the portion immediately adjacent the outer edge unattached whereby in retracted position the rigid top can be disposed directly against the outer edge of the stationary top member 10. This is effected byundercutting the inner marginal portion of the member 12 to form a horizontal face 16 adjacent the inner edge and an angular surface 17 continuing outwardly therefrom.
The ends of the strips 14 are secured to therigid member 12 by means of a block 18 wedging the strips between its inner surface and the inclined surface 17 and secured in position by screws 19. The inner portion of the block 18 is formed with an inwardly projecting shelf 20 disposed at an upward ins 1 It is to be understoode member 12, the strip 14 isloose so that the bars 13 of the flexiblejtop portion may be 'rolled about the rollers and permit the inner edge of the rlgid portion 12 to move in- Wardlybeyond the centre of the rollers into 1 contact Withthe outer edge'of the fixed bar 1-0. V The intermediate portion of the 0uterbar13,
adjacent thefixed top portion 12, is] supported by means of arms 21 having theirinner M ends securedto the bar 13 and the outer portions bent inarcuate form and rolled atthe outer extremity to move ,slid'ably on the shelf 20. Thus, When the top section is arranged in extended position," the arcuate varms 21' Will rest on the prevent sag ing thereof.
