IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-LAMPS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,865, dated October 3, 187 6; application filed September 4, 1876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAXTON W. 'SoUInEs, of Normal, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Lamp-Post and Lamp; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being made to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a view when the lamp is lowered. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved lamp-post and lamp, when the lamp is raised in its proper position, with a part broken away to show the internal spring E; Fig.3, a detached view of drip-cup.

This invention relates to improvements in that class of lamp-posts and lamps in which oil is used in the lamps for lighting the streets; and the invention consists in novel features in the construction of both the lamppost and lamp, as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.

A and B in the drawing represent the two sections of the lamp-post, made hollow, and of wrought or cast iron. The two sections are telescoped together, so that section B will slide freely up and down on section A, whereby it can be lowered, so that the lamp will be accessible from the street or walk, for any purpose desired. O is a spring-catch, secured to section B, and working in a slot, at, in the upper part of section A, for holding section B in position when raised up. D is a set-screw on section B, for holding the two sections firmly together, and section B in any desired position upon section A.

By thus making the lamp-post in two sections, as described, the upper section, carrying the lamp, can be turned in any direction required upon section A, so as to bring the back of the lantern (opposite the door) against the wind when it is desired to light the lamp, and said section secured firmly in position by the screw D.

E is a spiral or any other form of spring, arranged on the interior of the upper section B. so that if, by any means, the springcatch or the screw which holds it in its raised position fail to do their work, or are in anyway tampered with, whereby the upper section should fall, said spring E will break the fall, and the concussion will not in anyway injure the lamp or break the glass. F is a cup, arranged on top of section B, having a hole in its bottom, to prevent the oil from running down the outside of the post, and causing the drip, if there should be any from leakage of the lamp, topass down through the center of the post. G is the lamp, and H the oil-can, which rests in the drip-cup when the lamp is placed upon the post. It is secured thereon, in the present instance, by the wires b b on drip-cup, which pass up through the bottom of the lantern. It may, however, be fastened to the dripcup on top of the post by means of screws and bolts, so as to be easily removed for repairs when desired.

The lamp or oil-can is provided with a feeding-tube, I, closed by a screw-cap, 6, whereby the lamp can be tilled from the outside, thereby saving the time and trouble of removing the lamp from the lantern when it is desired to be filled.

The bottom of the post under ground can be furnished with arms or flanges in any desired manner, to secure it firmly in the ground.

I do not wish to confine my invention to the use of iron in constructing the post, as the same can be made of wood or other suitable material, or of wood and iron combined; nor to the upper section of the post sliding over the lower section, as the upper section can be made to slide within the lower section of the post.

I claim as my invention- 1. A lamp-post composed of two sections, A and B, whereby the upper section can be raised and lowered on the lower section, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The combination, with section A, having slot 0., of section B, having spring-catch O, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. The combination, with section A, of adjustable sectionB, having set-screw D, whereby section B can be turned around on sec tion A, and securedin any desired position thereon, substantially as and for the purpose the lantern and lamp are removably secured specified; v to the lamp-post, substantially as specified. 4.
