W. M. BIDDLE SHOE LAST Filed Aug. 26, 1930 I N VEN TOR M/ilham I"I-Eudd1e I W HIS ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 2 0, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WTLLIAM M. BIDDLE, OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY, AS SIGNORTO TURN-BITE PROCESS 00., INC., OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE snon LAST Application filed August 26, 1930. 'Serial No. 477,821.
This invention relates to shoe lasts, and has for an object to provide a last especially, though not exclusively, adapted for the first lasting operation of a turned shoe construction.
A further object of the invention is to provide along the sides of a last, recesses for receiving the excess area of the quarter or upper over the lining in a turned shoe, so that the turned shoe may be made with the quarter larger than the lining, so that the two will properly co-act when the shoe has been turned.
It is well known, that in the present practice of making a turned shoe, it is necessary to make the lining of greater area than the quarter, for the reason that, in the initial stages, the shoe is constructed inside out, and the lining must be of such area as to enclose the outer sheet of material. This results in a shoe giving the lining an inclination to wrinkle which is difiicult to overcome.
The invention is directed to other objects and possesses other features of novelty and advantage, some of which, together with the foregoing, will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a view of the improved last, in side elevation,
Figure 2 is a view of the last, in top plan,
Figure 3 is an inverted plan view of the last, and
Figure 4 is a sectional view, taken on line 44 of the several preceding figures.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The present invention, therefore, comprises a last having upon opposite sides,
, bottom, the grooves A are relatively wide and deep, as indicated at 12. Also, these grooves are set with their ma or axes at preferably an inclination to the vertical. The posterior margin of the grooves at the top being slightly nearer the posterior side of the last than the posterior side at the bottom. At the posterior extreme, the last is provided with a concave part 13 in place of the usual convex, or relatively straight construction. This concavity is for the purpose of receiving and accommodating the counter which is ordinarily skived at its opposite edges, forming a bulge at the central part, which thus fits into the concavity provided.
Also, the bottom of the last is slightly convexed, as indicated at 14, and the upper part 15, is made slightly narrower or thinner than customary.
Of course, the shoe last, herein illustrated, may be modified in various ways without departing from the invention herein set forth and hereinafter claimed.
The last is not limited to any particular use, but one manner of using is disclosed in the copending application for Turned shoe and method of making Serial No. 477,822, filed on even date herewith.
The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
1. A shoe last having grooves formed in the sides adjacent the heel part, and extending from top to bottom.
2. A shoe last having grooves formed in the sides adjacent the heel part, said grooves being tapered in extent, and extending from top to bottom.
3. A shoe last having grooves formed in the sides adjacent the heel part and extending from top to bottom, said grooves being wider and deeper adjacent the sole part than at the top.
4. A shoe last having a posterior concaved throughout substantially its entire vertical extent.
5. A shoe last having the posterior side formed as an inwardly extending curve with its limits substantially at the top and bottom of the last.
6. A shoe last provided with a concavity in r I trending spaced grooves upon oppositesides of such concave position, said grooves being wider adjacent the sole of the last than at the top. w
8. A shoe last having a concave posterior 7 part, approximately Vertical grooves, spaced. upon opposite, sidesadjacent the concave;part,
' and a sole part convex upon transverse plane.
9. A shoe last having grooves formed in the opposite sidesadjacent the-heel, said grooves extending substantially perpendicular to the plane of the heel.
10. A shoe last having grooves formed in opposite sides adjacent the heel, the major axes of which extend substantially perpenicu a to thepl e- -ofthe h l, s id gr ove beingwider at thebottom; than at. the top.
11,- A; shoe last havinggrooves formed in pp e si e jacen th eel, the major axes of; said grooves. being approximately perpendicular to. the plane oi the heel, the;
margins ofsaid grooves converging upward: ly and the. major axes also. converging up- Wardly', I a
