Description

Oct. 13, 1931. N. STRAMAGLIA 1,827,678
LAUNDRY DEVICE Filed Nov. 18, 1929 INVENTOR 19/5 ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 13, 1931 .NIWLA STRAMAGLIA, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS LAUNDRY DEVICE Application filed November 18, 1929. Serial No. 408,024.
This invention relates to certain novel improvements in laundry devices and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly eflicient in use and economical in manufacture.
The salient object of my invention is provide a laundry device which will facilitate the handling of clothes for drying pur- 1 poses and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an arrangement of the above described character which may be used in connection with a centrifugal clothes drying apparatus which will embody an arrangement that will greatly facilitate the positioning of the clothes'carrying member in such an apparatus. 1
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
' The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings,
showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of a preferred form of construction for my nvention Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 on Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a sectional'view taken substantially on the line 33 on Fig. 2; I
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken substantmlly on the line 4-4 on Fig. 3, the clothes carrying member having been removed;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken substantlally on the line 55 on Fig. 3; and
Fig. 6 is a detail view of the lower rtlon of the clothes handling member showmg the lower portion thereof in released position.
In the accompanying drawings wherein I have illustrated the preferred form of construction for my invention, 10 indicates a centrifugal drier of standard construction and my invention is intended to be associated with such a drier arrangement. The centrifu a1 drier includes a cylindrical wall 11 and 8%)01110111 wall 12. Suitable drive means are arranged in the housing 13 that is disposed below the wall 12 and a driving shaft 14 extends through the wall 12 upwardly into the area defined by the wall 11. A spacing collar 15 is arranged around the shaft 14 above the wall 12 and arranged above this spacing 001- lar 15 and fixed to the shaft 14 to be rotatable therewith is a circular plate 16. Extending upwardly from the circular plate 16 above the shaft 14 is a conical member 17. The i above construction is typical of the type with which my invention is intended to be associated but it is to be understood that my invention is not limited to usage with such structures as it may be used in connection wlth other similar devices without departing from the purview of my invention.
Arranged above the circular plate 16 is another plate 18 which has a central opening therein receiving the conical member 17. The a plate 18 is fixed to the plate 16 to be rotatable therewith. Extending upwardly from the pe ripheral edges of the plate 18 is a cylindrical wall 19 that is arranged interiorly of and spaced from the wall 11. This wall 19 is preferably made from a suitable wire mesh material for a purpose to be set forth present ly. The late 18 and the wall 19 are intended to e rotatable with the rotatable portions of the drier apparatus, it being manifest that the wall 11 is a stationary portion 8 of this drier apparatus.
At spaced apart intervals as, for example, at ninety degree intervals, channel shaped guide members 20 are fixed to the inner surface of the wall -19. These channel shaped 5 guide members have the openings therein directed inwardly of the wall 19 and the utility thereof will be set forth-presently. The upper end of one of the guide members 20'is illustrated in detail in Fig. 4 and, by referring to this view, it may be seen that the guiding portions thereof are flared outwardly as indicated at 21 to increase the width of the channel portion 22 of the guide members.
My invention as described herein is intended to be used in connection with a drying basket. One form of such a drying basket is described and claimed in my 00- ending application Ser. No. 396,856, filed 1n the United States Patent Office on or about October 2, 1929. 'Sucha drying basket is gen-' erically indicated by 23 in the accom anying drawings and includes a substantial y cylindrical wall 24 that is bent inwardly at its upper end to provide a flange-25. The wall 24 is preferably tapered so that the end portion thereof opposite that provided with the flange 25 will be of greater width. than the portion thereof adjacent said flange 25. At the lower of the drier structure in the manner tmbe set forth presently. A securing band 29 is directed through the various rings 27 and serves to secure the rings 27 adjacent the lower end of the member 28 as is clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The ends of the securing band are knotted as indicated at 30 for a purpose to be set forth presently.
In order to mount the basket 23 in the drier apparatus the following arrangement is pro vided. At spaced apart intervals, correspond ing to-the spacing of the guide members 20, tapered guide ribs'31 are secured to the outer surface of the wall 24. .As best illustrated in Fig. 3, thelower ends of these guide members are preferably pointed as indicated at 32 for a purpose'to be set forth presently.
At the upper end of the flange 25 chains v33 are arranged. A suitable connecting member is attached to the chains 33 and to the ring 34 that is connected to the loop 35 provided at the upper end of the conical member 28. Therefore the conical member 28 and the basket structure 23 may be simultaneously lifted when attachment is made to the member connected to the chains 33 and the ring 34. An arrangement for accomplishing this is clearly set forthin my co-pending application hereinbefore referred to.
In use the mesh sections 26 are secured to the lower end of the conical member 28 in the manner set forth and clothes are introduced into the basket 23 and are supported therein ,on the mesh sections 26 which will incline 1 upwardly as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1.
attachment member will then be connected the chains 33 and the ring 34 and therefore the basket'23 filled with clothes will be read- :ily transported. A device for facilitating the transportation of such an arrangement is set forth in the above referred to co-pending Y application. The clothes introduced into the basket 23 may be for example those removed from a washing machine and will therefore be water laden. The basket 23 carrying the water laden clothes will then be transferred to a' drying machine of the ty e indicated by 10 and the basket 23 will be 11 ed into a position above such a drier. As the basket is lowered the flared portions 21 co-operate with the pointed portions 32 to facilitatethe guiding of the tapered ribs 31 into the channels 22 of the guide members 23. As the basket is lowered the conical member 17 enters the conical member 28 and the ribs 31 pass down through the channels 22. It is therefore manifest that the basket 23 will be connected to the wall 19 in avery effective manner. Both the wall 24 and the wall 19 are formed from wire mesh material, or are otherwise provided with a plurality of openings, and therefore as the device is rotated at high speed water will be forced from the clothing in the basket 23 and will pass out into the area of the drier provided by the walls 11 and 12. The upper portion of the wall ll isfiared inwardly as indicated at 36, to prevent water from passing upwardly and out of the drying ap aratus. A drainarrangement 37 is provided topermit the drawing of of the water extracted from the clothes. I
After the above described operation has been carried out the attachment member will again be connected to the chains 33. The
basket 23 may then be lifted from the drier and therefore the inner end portions of the sections 26 will be moved from engagement with the conical member 28 and will assume a downwardly inclined position. This will facilitate access to the knot 30, which may be untied after the clothes have been disposed over a. sorting table or the like, and therefore the sections 26 will pass from supporting pos1t1on into a position substantially similar to that depicted in full lines in Fig. 6. Since the sections 26 will thenbe out of supporting position and by reason of the outward inch nation of the walls 24 it is manifest that the clothes will fall from the basket 23 in an unimpeded manner.
The conical me ber 28 will be removed from the drier structnr'e after the above described operations have been carried out, and therefore the inner end portions of the sections 26 may again -be connected thereto, and the hereintofore described operations may then again be carried out.
While I have illustrated and described preferred form. of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without depart-- ing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited tothe precise details ofconstruction set-forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modi v fications'as come within the scope of the ap pended claims. I Having thusdescribed my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
