IMPROVEMENT IN CHAMBER-BUCKETS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 182,741, dated October 3, 1876; application filed September 8, 1876.

To all whom it mcy concern:

Be it known that I, Lnwrs G. BATTEN, of Gloucester, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chamber-Buckets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in Which- Figure 1 is a centralvertical section, and

The object of my said invention is to economize in the construction of the foot or base of the body of the bucket; and also to construct the body and foot together in the form of the frustum of a hollow cone with a flared or funnel-shaped rim around the upper or smaller end of the said body, in combination with a correspondingly-flared lid hinged thereto, and provided with an elastic packing under the flared portion, as will be described, for the purpose of affording greater facility in pouring Water into and out of the bucket,-and for producing an air-tight joint between the flared sides of the mouth of the bucket and the lid.

Referring to the drawings, A is the body of the bucket; a, the base or foot; a, the flared mouth; B, the flared lid, and G the elastic packing-band.

The lower edge of the body of the bucket is Wired, and a bead, 3, is pressed outward around at about one or two inches above the wired bottom edge, into which bead the bottom a is pressed and soldered water-tight, leaving a portion of the body A, which is below the said bottom, to serve as the foot a, and thus avoid the attachment of the usual flared foot, made of a separate piece of the sheet metal, and requiring the expenditure of more time and labor in constructing and applying it to the body of the bucket.

The flared or funnel-shaped upper endor mouth a is wired around its upper edge, and its lower or contracted edge fitted into and soldered fast to the upper edge of the body or shut, as occasion may require. The under side of the flared edge 4 of the lid B has sprung around it an elastic band, C, which is secured durably in place by turning down upon its upper edge a narrow portion of the upper edge ot'the flared part 4; and it will be seen that the packing-band G will cause the lid, when closed down, to fit air-tight, and thus prevent the escape of any odor from the contaming-vessel.

A small knob, 6, affords a ready handle for lifting the lid, and an ordinary bail, 7, gives ready means for carrying the bucket, and can be let down by gravitation to allow the lid B to be set open, as occasion may require, as represented by the dotted lines in Fig. 1.

It will also be seen that the flared or funnel-shaped upper open end of the bucket will give ample facility for pouring the water into the bucket without spilling any of it over the outside, as is almost always the case with the ordinary chamber buckets in use and that in discharging the contents of the bucket it will not be necessary to turn it upside down, as is the case in discharging all the contents of the buckets in use.

I claim as my invention- The chamber-bucket described and shown, the same consisting of the body A, foot a, and flared mouth a, the flared and hinged lid B, the elastic packing-band O, and bail 7.
