scope of the fol-lowingclaims j age center of the member 10 and secured together as illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 by means of a brad 21 or any other suitable device. By so connecting these members together the cover portion is contracted somewhat into substantially the shape of a cone with depressions at intervals along the surface thereof provided by alternate lines of creasing1-2. After the members 16 have "been secured together the various smaller members 18 may be folded to extend downward from the point, of connection with the member "16 "and col cover member 10 since some tension may be appliedthereto.
With the complete device in flattened position as illustrated in Fig. Q-the same maybe ool-lapsed into a substantially triangular shaped package as illustrated in Fig. 1 by folding thesame along the various lines :of creasing l2. lVhen' completely folded a covering; member '23 of thin paper or any other materialmaybe slipped t'hereover for holding the-same inthis package'shape. The collapsed-deviceis then in position for marketing through sales machine-or through any other desired agency. i
From the foregoing it will beseen' that the present'invention provides an umbrella composed principally of paper which may be cheaply manufactured and sold f'or emergency uses. In: practice it/has; been found that the frame member composedof. the union of the various members l6issutfifcient to support the umbrella through violent storms.
' It is t'obeunderstood of course that the ma- 7 terial ofwhi'ch the members 14, '15, and 1-8 are "constructed "is of such substantial char-' ac'terastoadd reenforcement to the device. If desired fiber or relatively, still" pasteboard may-be used, the: only-requirement beingthat it shall be "cap able of folding into the position indicated in Fig. 4' and; at the same time it must have suiiicien-t rigidity to furnish the required strength to the"device. YIt' will furthermore be apparent that the arrange:-
men't provides a seli -contained umbrella-complete withframe and handle which umbrella can be collapsed into a small package and 'wliichcanbe expanded wii hout' the agency of furtherequipment such as wooden handles It is to be understood that the present inyention isn otto'be limited tothe illustrated embodiment but it is to be-limitedonly by the thereto being reldable int Hvicledtwit'h a plurality of radial creases, a plurality of flat reinforcing strips secured thereto at spaced intervals and extending radially from the center thereof, said strips having as integral parts thereof fold ablej members adapted to be secured together to form stays for the device and additional members 'lfeld-- able from said stays to form, when collected a handle for the device. 3. A device of the chara'cter described comprising a substantially circular member 'provided with a plurality of radial creases, a
plurality of fiat reinforcing strips securedrg thereto at spaced intervals and extending radially from the center thereof, said" strips having as integral parts thereof fold'ab'le members adapted-to be secured together to form stays forfthe device and, additional 8 members fo'ldable from saidstays to form, when collected, a handle for the device, said circular member and the strips attached o a fl'a't substantially triangular shaped package. i 4. A device of the charact'er describedcomprising a substantially circular member composed of a plurality of layers arrangedin cross-grain relation, said member beingprovided with a plurality-of radial creases, 3 plurality of fiat reinforcing strips secured thereto at spaced intervals and extending radially from the center thereof, said strips having as integral f arts thereof :t'old'a'ble members adapted to ice secured together to form stays for the device and additional members fold-able from said stays to form, when collected, a handlefor the-device. I
5. A'dev-ice of the character describedc'omprising a substantially circular member, a plurality of semi-rigid strips secured thereto at spaced intervals, said strips having as parts thereof members. foldabl'e toward the center ofsaid "circular member, and means for securing said members 'togetherfwhen folded toward the center of 'tlifecircular member.
6. A device of the character descr ibed'comprising a substantially ci'rcularmember, said member being provided with 'a plurality of radialcreases, a plurality offlat re-enforcing strips secured thereto, onebetween'ea'ch, of said radial creases, and extending radially from the centerther'eoflsaidstrips having as integral parts thereof members fol'dable toward the center orthe circular member, and
means 7 for, securing" the extremities of "said f j foldable' memberstog ethe-r when the same. are folded tofward the centerof said circular member. 7' J- I In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this-specification. I I
