Description

UNITED STATES JOHN T. REED, OF ST. JOHN, NEW BRUNSWICK, CANADA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WRENCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. [82,709, dated September 26, 1876; application filed June 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN T. REED, of St. John, iin the Province of New Brunswick and Dominion of Oanada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accom panying drawing, whichform a part of this specilcation, and in which- Figure l is a perspective View, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the Iigures.
rThis invention relates to wrenches; and it consists in the arrangement of a xed screw, upon which the movable jaw slides, and is kept in its proper position by an adjustable nut or set-screw, in the manner hereinafter more fully shown and specified.
In the drawing, A is the handle of the wrench, and Bis the shaft, upon the end of which is affixed the head O. Upon a projection or bracket, D, on the lower end of shaft B, is secured a screw, E. The jaw F slides upon the shaft B, and it has a downward projection,f, having a perforation, g, the diameter of which slightly exceeds that of screw E, so as to allow it to slide freely upon this. H is a nut, which fits upon screw E, and which may be moved freely upon it.
The manner of operating my improved wrench is as follows: The jaw F is first slid to its proper position, so as to clench they article that is to be operated upon, and the nut H is then carried up under the lower part of the arm or projection F, so as to support the same in its proper position.
The advantages of my improved wrench are as follows: By having downward projection F, which, during the operation, rests against shaft B, great strength is obtained, so that the wrench may be used for any kind of heavy work with perfect security' against breaking. Itis more easily operated than most wrenches as now ordinarily constructed, in which the jaw has toA be screwed forward to the position it is to occupy, the jaw being simply slid to its position, thus making the screw or nut that is to hold it much easier to operate.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a wrench, the combination of handle A, having shaft B and head O, stationary screw E, having nut H, and sliding jaw F, having downward projection f, perforated so as to slide upon screw E, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN TWELLS REED.
