Description

Oct. 13, 1931. H. B. IVEY I 1,326,739
CIGAR AND CIGARETTE LIGHTER Filed Sept. 4, 1929 Y IIIIIII;IIII IIIA I I n A y I 1 I I 1 1 I I I I I III/1 Invcnfof A t torney I 45 necessary. 7
It is to be noted that the casing 5 and lid 6 are of preferably concavo-convex configura Patented; (let. 13, 1931 p I HENRY 13; mi, oreonnsnoitotnonrn cARomNn OIGARAND creannrzrnmen'nna Applicationfiled septem'per f l Serial i I I 5 provide a simple and inexpensive cigar or cigarette lighter which may be readilyrcar ried about ones person, will be handy to ma- 7 nipulate, and at the same time present'a neat Of course, theffiuicl' within maybe any desired fluid used in such lighters, The'cover 13-i-s provided'with a suitable'openand attractive appearance. A still further object of to provide a lighter of the character above mentioned, including "a casing, the same be? ing in simulation to a watch casing, and have; v
Jsuhmerged the fluid of the container 11 ing arranged therein in a neat, compact man-" .15 ner, a fluid reservoir, a wick extending from" the'reservoir, and a neat, handy and easy operable sparking device for igniting the wick.
Other objects and advantages 1n: 1 i Figure 1 is a plan view of the lighter, the
casing of the lighter being shown in open" o a 1 extends-into the "bore of the container 15, Figure 2 is a detail vertical transverse sec position. 7
tional view taken substantially of Figure 1.

substantially on line 33 of Figure 1. With reference more in detail to the comprises a somewhat circular'casing 5 hav+ ing a lid 6 hingedly connected vthereto through the medium of spring hinge 7. The lid is normally maintained closed through the medium of the usual or conventional spring snap 8. The casing is further pro? vided with the swivelly mounted loop 9 to facilitate the attachment of a chainto-the casing, all of which construction is conven tional, especially in watch cases, and a more detailed description thereof is deemed un tion being insuch details and almost exact replica of a watch casing.

I The spark wheel 23 has formed integral therewith a shank or actuating L24,
Normallyurgingthe stem 24: against one end other-end of the spring -26lzheinganchored the outer end of which extends through the v slot 21 and terminates in a curved'handle ofithe slot 21 is a suitable spring 26, the free i ;;end portion of whichhears against the :stem

within the housing 20, as is also shown to advantage in Figure 1.
The spark wheel 22 is normally maintained in that position shown to advantage in Fig ure 1 through the action of the spring 26 and the outer end of the flint 17 is maintained in engagement with the teeth of the spark wheel 7 through the medium of the springlS as is obvious.
Obviously, by placing one thumb against the handle of the stem 2 and pressing against the same against the action of the spring 26, the spark wheel 22 will be rotated on its pivot, then by releasing, or removing the finger from the handle 25, the spark wheel a will be rotated in an opposite direction by the action of the spring 26, and being in contact a I with the flint 17 will cause a spark for ignitingthe outer end of the saturated Wick 1%, as
is apparent.
In order to extinguish the wick merely by the action of the closing of the lid 6, there is provided on the lid a tube 27, which tube is open at its lower end, so that when the lid is closed down for closing the casing, the tube 27 will fit over the extending end of the wick 14 as shown to advantage in Figure 2, thus extinguishing the flame, and at the same time preventing the escape of fumes from the casing when one is carrying the lighter about upon the person.
Manifestly, as when opening a watch casing, one need only press on the snap catch 8, thus releasing the cover, the same springs of aspring hinge 7 whereby ready access is had to the sparking apparatus for igniting the wick so that one may light a cigarette or cigar as the case may be. e I
Obviously, the casing may be suspended from a chain such as a watch chain, and the entire casing and contents placed within ones pocket to be carried about in a neat and readily accessible manner.
It is believed that due to the simplicity of the device, a clear understanding of the construction, operation, utility and advantages of a lighter of this nature will be clear to those suificiently skilled in this art, and a more detailed description is believed unnecessary.
Even though I have herein shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible to changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein deing to an open position through the medium scribed, and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described, my invention, what i I I wish to claim is:
A lighter for the purpose specified comprising a circular casing, a horizontally disposed partition arranged in the casing, said partition provided with a relatively large opening, a fluid reservoir arranged in said
