IMPROVEMENT IN BAG- HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,659, dated September 26, 1876; application filed June 24, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANCIS H. GREEN and ELI B. FINNEY, of Eau Claire, in the county of Eau Claire and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the bagholder complete. Fig. 2 is a detailed view of the fastening device detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spon'ding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a convenient and easily-operated apparatus for holding sacks and bags in position while being filled; and it consists in the combination ofa funnel or hopper or spout with the holding or fastening device, hereinafter more fully shown and described.
In the drawing, A is the funnel or hopper, of any suitable size and shape, the neck of which, a, must be of a size to permit an ordinary-sized bag to be fastened around it, as shown. In the drawing, the funnel A is shown'to be supported by a suitably-constructed frame-work, B; but this, as will be hereinafter shown, is not always necessary.
b b are straps, the upper ends of which are attached to the top of funnel A, and to the lower ends of which is secured a belt, 0, fitting around the neck a. To one end of this belt is riveted or otherwise secured a buckle, D, consisting of a curved piece of metal, having a slot, (1. The other end of belt 0 has the fastening device, which we will now proceed to describe.
E is a slotted metallic plate, which is shaped so as to fit upon the neckaof the funnel, so that when this latter is round, as shown in the drawing, the plate E is curved correspondingly. From the sides of plate E extend two arms or brackets, 12 a, between which is pivoted a lever, F, consisting of a handle, f, having two or more arms or prongs, e 0, upon which is secured a curved plate, G, the lower side of which has a series of teeth or stops,
6, engaging with a pawl, g, pivoted in the lower arm 0 of plate E. The end of plate G has a projection or tongue, I, which is slightly bent, so as to engage readily with the buckle D when the fastening device is to be operated. I
The method of operating ourimproved bagholding device will be readily comprehended from the foregoing description. The bag being loosely adjusted upon the neck a of the funnel-which, in order to prevent the bag from sliding off, may be provided with a flange at the bottom--the belt 0 is adjusted around it. Tongue I of plate G is then insert-ed into slot- 01 of buckle D, and the device is then tightened by means of lever F, the pawl g engaging with the teeth 71 of plate G so as to retain it in position. When the bag is full, it is removed by simply releasing pawl y, when plate Gr may be carried back, thus unlocking belt 0, and permitting the bag to be removed.
It is obvious that the bag-holding device herein described may be applied to a funnel or hopper without the frame or standard B, or it may be used upon the spouts of grainelevators, mills, thrashing-machines, &c., without changing the nature of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- 1. As an article of manufacture, the bagholder herein described, consisting of funnel A, having neck a, frame or standard B, and belt (J, having buckle D and fastener, consisting of slotted plate E, lever F, rack G, and pawl g, all combined and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
2. In combination with the discharge-spout of a mill, grain-elevator, or thrashing-machine, the bag-holding device herein described,
consisting of belt 0, having buckle D andfastener E F G g, substantially as and for the purpose herein shownand specified.
, In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
