Description

PAPER Filed Feb. 1, 1929 lNVENTOR L wmfis Josgflz fl Lowe B WWW/5% W J ATTORNEY Patented Oct. 6, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOSEPH A. LOWE, OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGINOR TO FALULAH PAPER COMPANY, OF FITCHBURG, MASSACHUSETTS, .A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS PAPER Application filed February This invention relates to improvements in paper.
An object of the invention is to provide a sheet of paper made up of a plurality of thicknesses, the outer thicknesses being of short fiber and an inner thickness of long fiber, so that when the sheet is scored and bent the long fiber intermediate sheet or ply will prevent the paper from breaking at the point where it is scored and bent.
In carrying out my invention, I preferably employ a long fibered paper, commonly known in the trade as kraft paper, which consitutes an intermediate ply of a series of plies,
all the plies securely adhered to each other so as to form a single sheet of paper, such, for example, as cardboard, or any sheet as flexible as desired. Preferably, the sheet has short fibered plies constituting the outer surfaces of the sheet so that these plies may take a desired luster or finish, while the sheet of long fibered paper will prevent breaking of the sheet when bent.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a plan view of a sheet of paper showlng different sections or plies broken away illustrating other plies beneath;
' Flgure 2 is an exaggerated edge View of the sheet of paper shown in Figure 1.
My improved sheet of paper or cardboard includes an intermediate sheet 1 of paper of long fiber and preferably a sheet of what is commonly known in the trade as kraft paper. This sheet 1 is covered by sheets or plies 2 of short fiber, all of the sheets or plies being secured together by adhesive or by any other method which may be carried out to form the several plies into a sheet.
1, 1929. Serial No. 336,834.
It is this broad idea of a sheet of paper having as an intermediate ply a sheet of long fibered paper such as kraft paper which constitutes the broad idea of my invention, and I do not wish to be limited to any number of these plies as this may be varied to suit the trade. 2
I am of course aware .that loose fibers and other structural devices have been utilized with this broad idea in View but so far as I have any knowledge 'the'use of a complete sheet of long fibered paper, such as kraft paper, as an intermediate ply in a sheet of paper or cardboard is broadly new and it is this which constitutes my invention.
Various changes and alterations might be made in the general form of the parts described without departing from my invention and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and altera tions as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
I claim: I
Asheet of paper comprising three attached sheets, the intermediate sheet being of longfibred kraft paper, the outer sheets being of short fibre, and an adhesive securing the sheets together forming a single sheet, capable of scoring and'bending without breaking, the intermediate sheet constituting in effect a hinge for the scored outer sheets.
JOSEPH A. LOWVE.
The short fiber sheets or plies constitute the outer surfaces of the paper so that they may take a luster or finish which may be desired, while the longer fiber ply or sheet 1 will prevent the sheet from breaking when it is scored or bent.
