WALTEB,WOLLASTON, or rrusxneon, MIcHIeAm'As'sIenon' 'ro THE nnunswrcx BALKE-CCLLENDER' COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELA- mums BALL Application filed. March 19, 1928. Serial No. 262,740.
I My invention relatesfto balls and has a special relation to'billiard balls.
One objectof my invention is to provide a ball marker for indicating the denomination or'number of a ball which shall be of such character that it; may be embedded in the surface of the vball'and will firmly adhere thereto. I
, to manufacture.
' Another object of invention is to provide'a marker of the described characteristics which shall be simple and inexpensive A further "obj ect of my invention is to provide'a simple process of manufacturing a ball and a marker of the character mentioned.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale of a mold. and a ball therein in. its finished condition, and, I
Figure 2 is an elevational view of a ball.
The ball 1 is made of any suitable moldable composition ofthe, kinds heretofore used for such purposes, such for instance, as shellac, phenolic condensation" products, celluloid, etc., and has embedded therein a marker'comprising a backing-2 which is made of fabric to insure its firm adhesion to the ball.
The backing has thereon a coating 3 which bears a printed character 4 for designating .thedenomination or number or the ball. The
coating is of such a composition as to firmly adhere to the fabric backing and impart a smooth surface thereto and is of such a color as to cause the printed character to show up distinctly. It may be a pyroxylin lacquer or a smooth surface when the coatmg 1sappl1ed oil enamel or other similar substance.
The fabric is ofsuch' a material as to have Over the coating is an additional smooth transparent coating 5=ofsuch substance, for
instance, as pyroxylin lacquer or an oil i enamel.
Billiard balls made in accordance with the invention and composed of a shellac'stock and having a marker with a white linen backing, a white coating of flexible pyroxylin lacquer bearing a character made with printers ink and an outer coating of transparent flexible pyroxylin lacquer were found to have exceptional properties. The flexibility of the lacquers render the coatings tough and prevent their cracking and chipping.
In making the markers and balls, a sheet of fabric has the coating 3 applied thereto in suitable manner as by brushing, spraying and dipping. Characters are printed on the coating 3, the outer coating 5 is then applied by brushing, spraying ordipping and the individual markers are stamped out from the sheet, each marker bearing a'character.
Each marker is then placed in the bottom of a cavity in a mold member 6 with the fabric backing upwardly disposed, and stock is placed in the mold cavity, a complementary mold member '7 is applied to the stock, and the proper shape is thus given to the ball While at the same time the stock is caused to firmly unite with the fabric backing of the marker.
The invention is not limited to the details described which may be extensively-modified without departing from the spirit of the invention and a substantial range of equivalents is contemplated within the scope of-the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
.1. A composition ball having embedded in its surface a marker comprisin a fabric backing, a coating over said backing of a composition to adhere thereto, said coating having a character imprinted thereon for indicating the denomination of the ball and a coating of transparent composition over the first mentioned coating and said character.
