Description
Oct. 6, 193.1., A. w. GRoNQulsT WHISTLE Filed Nov. 24, 1950 Patented Oct. 6, 1931 UNTED TES i ALBIN W. GRONQUST, OF BRANERB, MEINE GNSBURG, BRAINERBi MLNNEEGTA;
WHSTLE Application filed November 25;, Scial No. 437,679.;
This invention relates to Whistles, particularly, although not exclusively, adapted for use in the air lines of railway trains.
It is my object to provide an inexpensive and unusually strong and durable Whistle oi this kind whereby the original cost and eX- penses of up-keep and installation are reduced.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved Whistle, partially in central vertical section; Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the same taken at right angles to the section portion shown in Fig'. l and Fig. 8 is a detail plan view of the head 'for connecting the valve steam to the bell or sound producing element.
My device has tubular body portion d formed with a threaded nipple 5 adapted to be secured in a suitable fitting or tapped hole in a. compressed air line or in any other source of fluid under pressure. This body port-ion has a nut 6 ,integral therewith to facilitate securing the device to the support. n end 7 of the body l is adapted to communicate with the source oit fluid and is termed with a conical seat for a closure 8. This closure is secured to a valve stem 9.; which extends ai;-
ially through the tubular body 4 and projects into a coaXially disposed sound producing elementor bell l0. The bell l() has a sleeve portion whichr slidably tits the body 4 and encloses a coiled spring ll for normally holding the valve in closed position. @ne ond of the spring 1l rests on an internal shoulder in the body 4 and its other end abuts against a. head l2 which has an axial opening to receive an end oi the stem 9. A transverse bore in the bell l0.y head l2 and stem 9 is provided for afconnecting` pin 13 fitting;l snugly Within said bore. A passage lll through the head 12 is formed by cutting away the periphery ot said head in such position as to direct compressed air or other fluid against an edge or lip l5 termed at one side of an oblique slot in the bell lO constituting the outlet mouth for fluid.
The spring ll is held under compression between the head l2 and shoulder in the body so` that,l in order' operate the' Whistle, the bell l0 is actuated toY compress the spring; and' remove theic'los-ure 8 'liront its scat in tlfie body and' bell l()L allow the tree How O the i i fluid under' compression to the passage:
when the' valve is ope-ned.
My device constructed iiorn a small num rlie stem Qi is spaced 'lirenr tire bodyl ber 'i rugged parts and is rendered unusunl- ,s
l'y durable by my arrangement et thie sla rt valve stem 9 connected! tox the lloaver' portion; of` the bell 1which isI guided' by` its' smooths,` cylindrical l-)earin-g'v on the body Ll, said bei' ring` beingl` ot amp-le length to prevenzaccidental' bending ol' the: body portion. and bell ont of alignment'.` It will be 'iurther noted that the lie ad pertormsthe;double function of connecting the valve stem with the sound producing bell and directing the blast of air against the lip l5 o' the bell. The bell may also be employed as an actuating member which is manipulated to open the valve and may be constructed from a short section of standard pipe, preferably closed at one end.
Having described my invention What I claim as new and desire t-o protect by Letters Patent is:
l. A Whistle having' in combination a hollow body adapted to be placed in communication with a source ot fluid under pressure, a bell slidably engaging; said body along'l a telescoping portion of the same,'said bell being formed with a sound producing lip, a valve closure having a seat in said body and means Jfor operatively connecting' said bell and closure and for normally retaining said closure on its seat comprising a valve stem and a coiled spring' confined on said stem Within the telescoping` portions ot said bell and body.
2. A Whistle having in combination a hollow body adapted to be placed in communication with a source ot fluid under pressure and formed with a valve seat, a valve closure adapted to engage said seat, a valve stem Within said body and connected to said closure, a sound producing element mounted in continuation of said body and havingv an interior opening' in communication With the interior of said body, a head on said stem engaging 'gan the interior of said element, ai spring con-Y lined Within said body and element and arranged to engage said head to normally retain said closure 1n engagement With said seat, a lip formed on said element and a pas-- sage formed in said hea-d to direct fluid against said lip.
3. A whistle havingin combinati-on a tubular body adapted to be secured to a support, said body having an end opening adapted to be placed in communication with a source of fluid under pressure and being formed with a valve seat adjacent to said opening, a bell closed at one end and having a sleeve portion at its other end slidably engaging said body, a valve closure arranged to engage said seat,
a valve stem extendingv longitudinally in said body and sleeve portion and connected to said closure at one end, a head on the other end of said valve stem, means rigidly conn necting said head and stem to said bell, a spring confined Within said sleeve portion and body and engaging said head to normally hold said valve in closed position, said bell being formed with an outlet opening for fluid located in the side of said bellL between said head and closed end and passages for fluid in said body, sleeve portion and head for directing fluid to said outlet opening.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
ALBIN W. GRONQUIST.
