This invention relates to stoppers designed for use in connection with bottom pour ladles for handling molten metal.
For the sake of illustration, it might be stated that in known methods of controlling the How of molten metal from. bottom pour ladles, the stoppers are secured to the stopper rods, by threaded means, or by means of a bolt slotted for a key at one end, and pro- 13 vided with acircular flat head at the other end, the head carrying the stopper. In either case the entire force directed to the stopper as the stopper is being opened when the stopper is frozen within its opening, is directed it to the center of the head.
In the case of a threaded stopper, the threads sometime fail in service and the stopper is lost, resulting in a loss of time and money.
In the case of a bolted stopper, if the bolt is not the proper size, or does not properly engage the stopper rod or the wall of the recess or bolt hole, the bolt embeds itself in the soft clay or clay and graphite when'the sleeve bricks are fastened on the stopper,
with the possibility of the same being damaged, and subsequently failing in service.
It is therefore, the object of the present invention to provide a stopper of refractory material formed with an external groove and a refractory brick with an internal thread which engages the external groove in the stopper, in such a way that the force exerted on the stopper is distributed to the brick, thereby insuring against damage to the stopper when excessive force is directed thereto.
With the foregoing andother objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter describedand claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment ofthe invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7

The body portion 5 is formed with a bore extending through the central portion thereof, the here being provided with an enlarged portion 7 at one'end thereof, formed witlia thread 8, to fit within the groove9 of thestopper section 10. This stopper section 10 is constructed preferably of 'black'lead, and as shown the outer end thereof is curved to fit within the pouring openingof the ladle in which the device operates.) The inner end of the stopper section 10 is cut out. defining a flange 11 which fits within a groove formed within the body portion 5, as clearly shown by Figure 2 of the drawings, so that when the stopper section 10 is fitted within the enlarged portion of the central hereof the body portion 5. a close fit will be insured between the body portion 5 and section 10. Formed in the inner end of the stopper H section 10. is a threaded opening to receive the threaded extension 11 of the rod 12. the
. rod 12 being also provided with an enlargement 13 that fits within a cut away portion of the central bore wall.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that due to the construction shown and described, the stopper section 10 is connected with the bod portion 5 in such a way that the excessive force directed to the stopper in loosen- .ing the top er. should it become frozen withi it opening. distributed to the body portion 5. relieving the threaded extension 11 of excessive strain. to insure against the stopper becornine disconnected from the rod. It will further be seen that the enlargement- 13 will engage the wall of the enlarged portion of the central bore. should the rod loosen within the stopper section.
We claim:
1. A stopper of the class described, comprising a body portion having a central bore formed with an enlarged portion at one end, said enlarged portion having a thread, a stopper section having a groove to fit within the 5 threaded enlarged portion of the bore, said stopper section having a cut away portion, said body portion having an extension fitted in the cut away portion and engaging the stopper section, and a rod extending into the bore and having connection with the stopper section.
2. A stopper of the class described, comprising a body portion having a central bore, said bore having threads at one end thereof, a stopper section having threads and fitted within one end of the bore, said stopper section having a cut away portion formed in one end thereof. said body portion having a central extension fitted within the cut out portion of the stopper section, a rod extending into the bolt of the body portion, and said rod having threaded connection with the stopper section.
3. A stopper comprising a body portion and a stopper section. said body portion having' a threaded opening in its lower end, said stopper section having threads fitted in the threaded opening of the body portion, said stopper section having a threaded opening,
and a rod extending into the threaded opening in the said stopper section to removably secure the rod in the stopper section.
4. A stopper comprising a body portion, and a stopper section, a rod removably connected with the stopper section for lifting the stopper, and means independent of the rod for connecting the body portion and stopper section.
