Fi led Nov. 9, 1929 Patented Sept. 29, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE The present invention relates to hair curlers of the type which is adapted to be rolled into thc'locks of hair, particularl before retiring, and which when remove leaves the hair in the desired curled condition;

An object of the invention is to provide a hair curler which possesses marked advantages over prior structures used for curling bobbed hair. i

The present invention relates specifically to certain improvements and simplification in the structure of hair curler which is disclosed in my prior Patent No. 1,584,527, granted May 11, 1926.

Another object of the invention is to provide a hair curler which may be applied to short locks of hair to be curled by a single fold or overturning of the' curler to engage the opposite sides of a lock of hair and wherein the curler may then be rolled to closely roll the engaged lock of hair for holding'it tightly in such rolled condition for setting it and producing the desired curl.

The invention further aims at the provision of a hair curler which may besecurely clamped by a single fold to a lock of hair and then easily rolled into either a tight or loose roll a curler which may be varied in size and construction according to the length and texture of the hair on which it is to be used; a curler which may be manufactured and sold at low cost; and a curler which is of the utmost simplicity in use when rolling the lock of hair on the curler or in removing. the lock of hair therefrom. f

The invention has for a still further object an improved method of applying hair curlers of the type "adapted to be rolled with a lock of hair so as to more effectively and evenly roll the lock of hair and produce a finished curl which is more lasting and even to the individual hair strands so as to produce a finished curl which will remain in shape for a long period of time and which has a more pleasing form and more nearly simulates a natural curl. +1

With the foregoing and other objects in view. the invention will. be more fully described hereinfter, and will be more particularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.

Figure 1 is a lan view of a hair curler constructed according to the present invention.

The body ortion of the curler is made of suitable flexi le material, such as a fabric, kid or other soft leather, or the like, and comprises a main body portion 10 and a flap 11. The upper edge of the body portion is provided with a narrow hem 12 which extends throughout the main portion 10 and the flap 11. A wire 13 of non-resilient bendable material is inserted in the hem 12 to stiffen the body port-ion and hold the flap 11 yieldingly in overturned relation, such as shown in Figure 2.

The main part 10 of the body portion is provided at its lowersedge with a wide hem 14. The wide hem 14 carries therein a stifiening strip 15 which .is non-resilient and bendable and which extends beyond the opposite lateral edges of the main part 10 to provide a pair of bendable tongues 16. The tongues 16 as well as the stifi'ening strip 15 may comprise a continuous element of composite construction such none or more wires over which is woven suitable covering for the protection of the fingers, head and hair during the handling and application of the as shown in Fi of the hem 14 as it is unattached to the adjacent tongue 16. The edge portions of the fabric may be given any suitable fanciful configuration for imparting a finished efi'ect to the article, and in thepresent-instance the fabric is scalloped or serrated at its edges,

One method of using the hair curler of this invention is to apply the curler with the body part 10 against one side of the lock of hair and hold it in such position while the flap 11 is bent over against the opposite side of the lock of hair as shown in Figure 2. This clamps this body portion on the lock of hair and the curler is sopositioned that the ends of the strands of hair are enveloped in the lower end of the curler.

Holding the body portion to the lock of hair in this folded positionthe user rolls the hem 14, together with the stiffening strip 15, inwardly and over-against the lower portion of the flap 11, as shown in Figure 3.

The rolling is continued until the body portion is completely rolled when the tongues 16 are then bent outwardly against the outer side of the body part 10 to engage across the same and hold the curler and the lock ofhair from unrolling, as shown in Figure 4.

During the rolling operation, as shown in Figure 5, the curler may be swung in an edgewise manner back and forth through a distance approximately indicated by the ically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being restricted onlyby the scope of the following claims.

What is claimed-is:

1. A hair curler, comprising a flexible body sheet adapted to be overturned on a transverse fold line for envelo ing a lock of hair, a bendable stiffener exten ing throughout one longitudinal edge of said body sheet for holding the latter in overturned position, and a. bendable tongue member secured to the opposite longitudinal "edge of the body sheet throughout substantially one half the length thereof and at one side of said fold line, said tongue member having end portions projecting beyond the'connected portion of the body sheet and adapted to be bent over upon the same subsequent to the rolling of the sheet with the enclosed lock of hair to retain the curler in position. i

A hair curler comprising a flexible body sheet adapted to be folded over intermediate its ends for enclosing a lock of hair between the folded halves of the sheet, a bendable stiffener mounted in one longitudinal edge of the sheet and extending throughout both halves thereof for yieldingly holding the sheet in overturned position upon a lock of hair,'and a bendable tongue member secured to the opposite edge portion of the body sheet dotted lines 17 in Figure 5. This insures an r even rolling of the hair and drawing the same tightly so that the strands of hair may individually settle into flat layers between the walls of the body portion.

The stiffening strip 15 serves as a roller or center portion upon which the fabric body is rolled, so as to hold the fabric body and the layer of hair in proper smooth condition during this swinging and rolling action.

When the method, illustrated in Figure 5, is employed the lock of hairis rolled evenly and smoothly and may also be drawn tight so that the hair is more tightly and evenly held in the form of a curl, and after the curler is removed, a curl is produced which will remain in shape for an indefinitely long period of time,and the curl is also smooth and even throughout its length.
