Abstract

A ''''home-permanent'''' hair waving device involving a molded plastic multiple clip having an elongate, centrally-disposed body member and two integral, resilient side arms coextensive with the body member and adapted to clamp against the latter. A foilbacked or faced wrapper paper can be arranged for clamping between one arm and the body. The other clip arm is adapted to clamp strands of hair against the body member, which are to be curled or waved, such clamping being carried out closely adjacent the scalp. The clamped hair strands are disposed so as to overlie the foil-backed paper, which has flaps or marginal portions that are then folded over the hair along longitudinal fold lines to provide an essentially flat, three-layer thickness or assemblage. Such assemblage can then be rolled, starting at its free end, into a more or less tight curl, depending on the type of wave desired. The folded and curled wrapper retains hair treating solutions which have been applied to the hair, and maintains the hair strands moist for a desired interval, after which the user uncoils the paper wrapper and releases the arms of the plastic clip device for removal of the same. The arms and body member of the clip device are so constituted that the entire unit can be economically molded as a single piece and in a single operation, in simple molds whereby the fabrication cost is held to a minimum.

Gibner Lehmann [57] ABSTRACT A home-permanent hair waving device involving a molded plastic multiple clip having an elongate, centrally-disposed body member and two integral, resilient side arms coextensive with the body member and adapted to clamp against the latter. A foil-backed or faced wrapper paper can be arranged for clamping between one arm and the body. The other clip arm is adapted to clamp strands of hair against the body member, which are to be curled or waved, suchclamping being carried out closely adjacent the scalp. The clamped hair strands are disposed so as to overlie the foil-backed paper, which has flaps or marginal portions that are then folded over the hair along 1ongitudinal fold lines to provide an essentially flat, threelayer thickness or assemblage. Such assemblage can then be rolled, starting at its free end, into a more or less tight curl, depending on the type of wave desired. The folded and curled wrapper retains hair treating solutions which have been applied to the hair, and maintains the hair strands moist for a desired interval, after which the user uncoils the paper wrapper and releases the arms of the plastic clip device for removal of the same. The arms and body member of the clip device are so constituted that the entire unit can be economically molded as a single piece and in a single operation, in simple molds whereby the fabrication cost is held to a minimum.

In the past various types of hair curling or waving devices have been proposed and produced. Some of these devices consisted of small plastic clamps and rollers so arranged that the strands of hair had to be curled on the rollers and the latter then clamped to prevent unrolling, after which waving solutions were applied to the hair, then neutralizers, washing solutions, etc. While these prior home wave devices were usable, they had a number of disadvantages. For one thing, the proper arranging of the hair about the roller was difficult and often could not be satisfactorily accomplished by the average person, also the solution that was applied tended to evaporate or run, leaving portions of the curled hair too dry and impairing the efficiency of the curling procedure. For another thing, the applying of the waving solution tended to be messy and resulted in soaking of the scalp. It invariably required a certain amount of skill and technique, especially if a woman was working on her own hair. Additionally, in many instances the curls that were produced were too tight, resulting in a kinky look after the curlers were removed and the hair was neutralized, washed and combed out.

SUMMARY The above drawbacks and disadvantages of prior hair curling devices are obviated by the present invention, which has for one object the provision of novel and improved plastic clips for hair waving devices, which clips are especially easily utilized in the procedure for waving ones own hair in conjunction with wrappers which minimize drying out or evaporation of the waving solution. A related object of the invention is to provide improved plastic clamping-type clips for use with paper wrappers, which can be economically fabricated essentially as simple one-piece, molded plastic articles especially adapted for use in conjunction with said wrappers, thereby to reduce costs to an absolute minimum.

The foregoing objects are accomplished by a novel molded plastic dual-clip device comprising an elongate centrally-disposed body member having integral therewith a pair of resilient side clamping arms which are coextensive with the body member and connected thereto by resilient connecting webs constituting hinges in effect. An elongate paper wrapper can be at one end clamped between one side arm and the body member of the clip device; selected strands comprising a bunch of hair are then arranged to be clamped adjacent the scalp between the body member and the remaining clamping side arm. The hair is placed so as to overlie the paper wrapper, whereupon waving solution is applied; thereafter side marginal portions of the paper wrapper can be folded inward over the hair in overlapping relation. Finally, the folded wrapper is rolled or curled, starting with the free end thereof, until it is brought in close proximity to the novel plastic clip device. The inherent ductility of the folded wrapper with foil facing is such that the roller wrapper retains its shape without any additional fastening means being required on the clip. The curling or waving solution, being contained in the folds of the rolled wrapper, is prevented from evaporating and instead the hair remains moist and the solution active. After an interval of time, the wrapper is unrolled and opened, and the novel clip device released whereupon it can be readily removed from the hair that has been treated. The entire waving device is thus seen to consist essentially of only two parts, the molded plastic clip part as provided by the invention and the foil-backed paper wrapper part.

Other advantages of the invention reside in the provision of an improved hair curler or waving device as above characterized, which is especially easy to operate in effecting the clamping of the paper wrapper and also of the strands of hair, and in arranging the hair over the wrapper, folding the wrapper inward in overlapping relation and thereafter rolling or curling the wrapper to its final position.

Still other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

In the accompanying drawings showing several embodiments of the invention:

FIG. 1 shows a person utilizing the invention to wave hair. One curling device is illustrated already applied and in the fully rolled-up position. Another curling device is illustrated in the process of rolling up the folded, overlapped, foil-backed wrapper after a bunch of strands of hair has been clamped by the plastic dual clip and after waving solution has been applied.

FIG. 2 is a front plan view of the one-piece molded plastic dual clip as provided by the invention.

FIG. 3 is a view like that of FIG. 2 but showing one of the clamping arms secured in its clamped position against the central body member of the clip.

Considering first FIGS. l-11, the plastic clip of the permanent waving device as provided by the invention is shown as comprising essentially a one-piece molded plastic piece designated generally by the numeral 20, which is especially adapted to be used with a paper or paper-like foil-backed wrapper member designated 22. The plastic clip 20 comprises a centrally-disposed elongate body member 24 of generally rectangular cross section, which is at one end joined by two curved, resilient connecting webs 26 respectively to a pair of side clamping arms 28. The side clamping arms 28 are slightly curved, and have a T-shaped cross section comprising a flat main portion 30 and a centered strengthening rib portion 32'.

At its free end the body member 24 has a' retainer socket in the form of an arcuate or curved portion 34 presenting a concave end face 36 which is adapted to accommodate bulbous or bill portions 38 of partially circular or semi-circular hook formations 40 provided on the free extremities of the side arms 28. The hook formations 40 are curved and resilient, and enable the bulbous portions 38 to be forced up and over side edges 42 of the socket portions 34. The four corners of the socket portion 34 have small upstanding nibs 44 which constitute guides and retainer devices to guide the

38, 40 of the side arms as the latter are being forced and clamped onto the arcuate portion 34 of the body member 24. FIG. 3 shows one side arm in its clamped position, with the remaining side arm still unclamped.

The center, body member 24 can also be provided with a rubber or other non-slip sleeve or jacket 46 for cooperation with the clamping arms 28 to provide a non-slip grip when the arms are closed or in clamping position. The jacket 46 has a cross-section substantially in the shape of the letter C.

Referring to FIG. 5, the wrapper 22 can comprise a sheet of paper having a foil backing. The configuration of the wrapper 22 is generally rectangular, each wrapper having a grip tab 48 and side flaps 50 which are joined to the center or main body portion 52 along fold lines 54.

Referring to FIG. 6, the grip tab 48 of the wrapper 22 is shown as being clamped between the body 24 of the plastic clip and one of the side arms 28 thereof. Also in FIG. 6 are illustrated strands of hair 56 which are clamped to and frictionaily seized by the plastic clip by the other one of the side arms 28 thereof. The hair strands 56 are shown as overlying the central or body portion 52 of the wrapper 22.

The application of the waving device to the head of a user in the manner shown in FIG. 6 is also depicted in FIG. 1 wherein the plastic clip 20 has a wrapper 22 attached to it and also is clamping the strands of hair 56 which are to be curled or waved. After application of the waving solution to the hair 56 which overlies the wrapper 22 has been effected, the side flaps 50 of the wrapper are folded inward over the hair and in overlapping relation. This is illustrated in FIGS. 1 and 7. Thereafter, the folded wrapper is curled or rolled upward as indicated in FIGS. 1, 7 and 8, the rolling being completed when the plastic clip 20 is reached as shown by the fully applied waving device designated at 58 in FIG. 1.

The use of a foil backing on the paper of the wrapper 22 has several advantages. It prevents the waving solution from leaking or dripping out of the rolled up wrapper, and prevents drying out of the solution. Also, the foil imparts ductility or a body to the wrapper, and enables it to retain various given shapes. Thus, when the wrapper is rolled up as indicated at 58 in FIG. 1, it will retain the rolled-up shape without any additional holding devices required of the clip 20.

After a predetermined period of treatment of the hair with the waving solution, the waving device is removed from the head by merely unrolling the wrapper 22 and loosening the clamping side arms 28 of the plastic clip. Such loosening may be easily effected by applying a twisting force to the hook portions 38 of the arms 28 in a counterclockwise direction as viewed from the end of the plastic clip. This is illustrated in FIG. 7 by the arrows. Such counterclockwise or unscrewing movement is similar to that which is naturally employed when unscrewing a nut, for example, from a screw and is the natural movement that most people are familiar with. The application of such force to remove the clip will cause the portions 38 of the arms 28 to be forced over the small detent nibs 44, since these are of relatively low height and are not intended to provide a permanent restraint of the clamping arms.

As shown in FIGS. 10 and 11, the portions 38 of the clamping arms are of tapered configuration in addition to being oval whereby they can nest one against the other as seen in FIG. 11 so that each occupies a comparable portion of the top area of the arcuate part 34 of the clip.

Another embodiment of the clip part of the invention is illustrated in FIGS. 12 and 13. In this embodiment there is shown a one-piece molded plastic clip having a central, straight body portion 62 which at one end is connected to curved,

64 and 66 by resilient curved webs 68. The free end of the center body member 62 has a rounded enlargement or head 70 adapted to be received in a semi-circular hookshaped bent portion 72 of the am 66, having a bill 73. Due to the resilience of the arm 66 and of the plastic material making up the clip, the hook portion 72 can be readily snapped over the head 70. The free extremity of the arm 64 has a larger semi-circular hook portion 74 with a bill 75 which is adapted to be snapped over the hook portion 72 of the arm 66 after the latter has been clamped against the center body member 62. A small undercut or shoulder 76 on the hook 72 can engage an internal shoulder or undercut 78 of the hook 74 to effect a more secure retention of the clamping arms, as will be understood. The body member 62 can have a plurality of transverse ribs 80, and the

64, 66 can have cooperable ribs 82 to provide a non-slip arrangement which minimizes the likelihood of the wrapper 22 pulling away from the clip, or of the clip being loose on the strands of hair which are being clamped.

Still another embodiment of the invention is illustRated in FIGS. 14 and 15. The one-piece plastic clip illustrated therein comprises a center body member 86 at one end joined to two curved resilient side clamping arms 88. The body member 86 has at its free end a hooked member or head portion 90 provided with a pair of spaced depending retainer tabs 92. The free ends of the side clamping arms 88 have retainer nibs 94 adapted to be slipped under the tabs 92 to hold the arms clamped against the body member. In effecting such clamping, the resilient arms 88 are forced slightly sidewise or edgewise to bring the tabs 94 thereof in the retained positions between the tabs 92 and the body member 86.

Yet another embodiment of the invention is illustrated in FIGS. 16 and 17, wherein there is shown a one-piece molded plastic clip comprising a central body member 98 having a folded-back or hook-like head portion 100 spaced therefrom at its free end, the other end of the body member being integrally secured to curved resilient

102 and 104. The free extremity of the arm 102 has a tab 103 which is adapted to he slid under the bill portion 106 of the hook 100, and the free extremity of the arm 104 has a hook configuration 108 adapted to be hooked over the head 100 of the body member 98. A retainer shoulder 110 on the head 100 is cooperable with a shoulder 112 of the hook formation 108 to effect a more secure retention.

Still another embodiment of the invention is illustrated in FIGS. 18 and 19, which show a one-piece molded plastic clip comprising an elongate central body member 114 having at its opposite ends curved resilient webs 116 on which are carried side clamping arms 118 provided at their free extremities with resilient semi-circular hook formations 120 including bulbous bill portions 122. At the ends of the body member 114 retainer hooks in the form of curved tabs 124 are provided, to be received in the hook formations 120 so as to retain the arms clamped against the body member. In effecting such clamping, the hooks 120 will yield, and the bulbous bill portions 122 will be forced over the curved tabs 124, as can be readily understood.

It will now be seen from the foregoing that I have provided a novel and improved one-piece plastic clip for use in a hair-waving device, said clip comprising an extremely simple, low-cost one-piece molded plastic piece especially adapted for use with a foldable paper wraPper so as to be cooperable in a manner to enable a user to easily and quickly roll up strands of hair which have been treated with a waving or curling solution. The clip device can be easily and quickly operated when being applied to the head by the user in the desired manner, and the hair strands will be properly confined and kept moist while being subjected to the action of the waving solution. Relatively little skill is required in utilizing the device, and the clamping and unclamping action may be easily and quickly effected. By the use of the foil-backed paper wrapper in conjunction with the plastic clip there is minimized messiness and loss of solution or waving fluid during the hair curling treatment.

Variations and modifications are possible without departing from the spirit of the invention.

I claim:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a one-piece plastic hair curler clip comprising in combination:

a. an elongate body member of molded plastic,

b. a pair of arms integral with said body member and arranged to be coextensive therewith,

c. a plurality of resilient connecting webs constituting hinges, respectively movably connecting one end of each arm to said body member, said arms being normally spaced from the body member and angularly disposed thereto, and

d. means for releasably securing the free end of each arm to the corresponding end of the body member, thereby to hold said arms clamped against the member for frictionally seizing therebetween a wrapper and strands of hair which are to be curled.

e. said arms being connected both to the same end of said body member,

the means for releasably securing the free end of each arm comprising a partially circular hook portion having a bill at the extremity of each arm respectively, and a retainer socket at the corresponding end of said body member adapted to accept the bill of each hook portion so as to hold each arm coextensive with said body member,

g. said retainer socket being provided with a plurality of nibs to serve as guides for engagement with the bills of the hook portions of said arms.

2. The invention as described in claim 1, wherein:

a. said resilient connecting webs are semi-circular in shape, and

b. said arms are provided with stiffening ribs, and

have a bowed shape.

3. The invention as described in claim 2, and further including:

a. a sleeve having a cross section substantially in the shape of the letter C, carried by and enclosing the body member on at least two sides.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a one-piece plastic hair curler clip comprising in combination:

a. an elongate body member of molded plastic,

b. an arm member integral with said body member and arranged to be coextensive therewith,

c. a resilient connecting web constituting a hinge, movably connecting one end of the arm member to said body member, said arm member being normally spaced from the body member and angularly disposed thereto, and

d. means for releasably securing the free end of the arm member to the corresponding end of the body member, thereby to hold said arm member clamped against the body member for frictionally seizing therebetween a wrapper and strands of hair which are to be curled,

e. said securing means comprising a partially circular resilient hook portion of one of said members, said hook portion having a bill and being disposed at the extremity of said one member, and said securing means further comprising an end portion of said other member, having retainer socket means adopted to accept the bill of the hook portion of the said one member,

f. said resilient hook portion yielding and tending to open up as it becomes accepted in said retainer socket means. 5. The invention as set forth in claim 4, and further including:

a. a second arm member, said second arm member being connected to one end of said body member,

b. means for releasably holding the free end of the second arm member to the corresponding end of the body member, comprising a partially circular resilient hook portion including a bill of one member and a retainer socket means of the other member which is adapted to accept the bill of the one member as the hook portion thereof yields and partly opens up.

6. The invention as set forth in claim 5, wherein:

a. the said arm members are both connected to the same end of the body member.

7. The invention as described in claim 5, wherein:

a. the arm members are fastened at opposite ends of said body member respectively. 8. The invention as described in claim 4, wherein:

a. the means for releasably securing the free end of tic hair curler clip comprising in combination:

a. an elongate body member of molded plastic,

d. means for releasably securing the free end of each arm to the corresponding end of the body member, thereby to hold said arms clamped against the member for frictionally seizing therebetween a wrapper and strands of hair which are to be curled,

e. said arms being connected both to the same end of said body member,

f. the means for releasably securing the free end of each arm comprising an enlargement at one end of plastic hair curler clip comprising in combination:

a. an elongate body member of molded plastic,

(1. means for releasably securing the free end of each arm to the corresponding end of the body member, thereby to hold said arms clamped against the member for frictionally seizing therebetween a wrapper and strands of hair which are to be curled,

e. said arms being connected both to the same end of said body member,

f. the means for releasably securing the free end of each arm comprising a nib at the free end of each arm respectively, and a hooked member at the free end of said body member provided with tabs adapted to receive said nibs when the two arms are coextensive with said body.

11. As a new article of manufacture, a one-piece plastic hair curler clip comprising in combination:

a. an elongate body member of molded plastic,

d. means for releasably securing the free end of each arm to the corresponding end of the body member, thereby to hold said arms clamped against the member for frictionally seizing therebetween a wrapper and strands 0F hair which are to be curled,

e. said arms being connected both to the same end of said body member,

f. the means for releasably securing the free end of each arm comprising a folded-back free end portion of the body member, arranged in spaced relation thereto,

g. the free end of the first arm having a tab receivable in the space between the body member and the folded-back portion thereof, and

h. the free end of the second arm having a hook adapted to snap over the folded-back portion of the body member.

Claims

1. As a new article of manufacture, a one-piece plastic hair curler clip comprising in combination: a. an elongate body member of molded plastic, b. a pair of arms integral with said body member and arranged to be coextensive therewith, c. a plurality of resilient connecting webs constituting hinges, respectively movably connecting one end of each arm to said body member, said arms being normally spaced from the body member and angularly disposed thereto, and d. means for releasably securing the free end of each arm to the corresponding end of the body member, thereby to hold said arms clamped against the member for frictionally seizing therebetween a wrapper and strands of hair which are to be curled. e. said arms being connected both to the same end of said body member, f. the means for releasably securing the free end of each arm comprising a partially circular hook portion having a bill at the extremity of each arm respectively, and a retainer socket at the corresponding end of said body member adapted to accept the bill of each hook portion so as to hold each arm coextensive with said body member, g. said retainer socket being provided with a plurality of nibs to serve as guides for engagement with the bills of the hook portions of said arms.

2. The invention as described in claim 1, wherein: a. said resilient connecting webs are semi-circular in shape, and b. said arms are provided with stiffening ribs, and have a bowed shape.

3. The invention as described in claim 2, and further including: a. a sleeve having a cross section substantially in the shape of the letter C, carried by and enclosing the body member on at least two sides.

4. As a new article of manufacture, a one-piece plastic hair curler clip comprising in combination: a. an elongate body member of molded plastic, b. an arm member integral with said body member and arranged to be coextensive therewith, c. a resilient connecting web constituting a hinge, movably connecting one end of the arm member to said body member, said arm member being normally spaced from the body member and angularly disposed thereto, and d. means for releasably securing the free end of the arm member to the corresponding end of the body member, thereby to hold said arm member clamped against the body member for frictionally seizing therebetween a wrapper and strands of hair which are to be curled, e. said securing means comprising a partially circular resilient hook portion of one of said members, said hook portion having a bill and being disposed at the extremity of said one member, and said securing means further comprising an end portion of said other member, having retainer socket means adopted to accept the bill of the hook portion of the said one member, f. said resilient hook portion yielding and tending to open up as it becomes accepted in said retainer socket means.

5. The invention as set forth in claim 4, and further including: a. a second arm member, said second arm member being connected to one end of said body member, b. means for releasably holding the free end of the second arm member to the corresponding end of the body member, comprising a partially circular resilient hook portion including a bill of one member and a retainer socket means of the other member which is adapted to accept the bill of the one member as the hook portion thereof yields and partly opens up.

6. The invention as set forth in claim 5, wherein: a. the said arm members are both connected to the same end of the body member.

7. The invention as described in claim 5, wherein: a. the arm members are fastened at opposite ends of said body member respectively.

8. The invention as described in claim 4, wherein: a. the means for releasably securing the free end of the arm member comprises an enlargement at said end portion of said other member, in which enlargement said socket means Is disposed.

9. As a new article of manufacture, a one-piece plastic hair curler clip comprising in combination: a. an elongate body member of molded plastic, b. a pair of arms integral with said body member and arranged to be coextensive therewith, c. a plurality of resilient connecting webs constituting hinges, respectively movably connecting one end of each arm to said body member, said arms being normally spaced from the body member and angularly disposed thereto, and d. means for releasably securing the free end of each arm to the corresponding end of the body member, thereby to hold said arms clamped against the member for frictionally seizing therebetween a wrapper and strands of hair which are to be curled, e. said arms being connected both to the same end of said body member, f. the means for releasably securing the free end of each arm comprising an enlargement at one end of the body member, a hook portion at the extremity of the first of said arms adapted to engage the enlargement, said hook portion having an undercut outer surface, and g. a second hook portion at the extremity of the second arm, the inside surface of which is adapted to engage the undercut outer surface of said first arm when the two arms are coextEnsive with and clamped against said body.

10. As a new article of manufacture, a one-piece plastic hair curler clip comprising in combination: a. an elongate body member of molded plastic, b. a pair of arms integral with said body member and arranged to be coextensive therewith, c. a plurality of resilient connecting webs constituting hinges, respectively movably connecting one end of each arm to said body member, said arms being normally spaced from the body member and angularly disposed thereto, and d. means for releasably securing the free end of each arm to the corresponding end of the body member, thereby to hold said arms clamped against the member for frictionally seizing therebetween a wrapper and strands of hair which are to be curled, e. said arms being connected both to the same end of said body member, f. the means for releasably securing the free end of each arm comprising a nib at the free end of each arm respectively, and a hooked member at the free end of said body member provided with tabs adapted to receive said nibs when the two arms are coextensive with said body.

As a new article of manufacture, a one-piece plastic hair curler clip comprising in combination: a. an elongate body member of molded plastic, b. a pair of arms integral with said body member and arranged to be coextensive therewith, c. a plurality of resilient connecting webs constituting hinges, respectively movably connecting one end of each arm to said body member, said arms being normally spaced from the body member and angularly disposed thereto, and d. means for releasably securing the free end of each arm to the corresponding end of the body member, thereby to hold said arms clamped against the member for frictionally seizing therebetween a wrapper and strands oF hair which are to be curled, e. said arms being connected both to the same end of said body member, f. the means for releasably securing the free end of each arm comprising a folded-back free end portion of the body member, arranged in spaced relation thereto, g. the free end of the first arm having a tab receivable in the space between the body member and the folded-back portion thereof, and h. the free end of the second arm having a hook adapted to snap over the folded-back portion of the body member.
