i The locking mechanism for the cover 8 com prises a radially slidablebolt 12 connected at its inner end to the hinge leaf 10 by. a swing- Y ing link 13and adapted to' slide to and from the tub axis in a socket' 14 diametrically formed in the top portion of acylindrical tubular casing 15. The latter is mounted upon `the curb, preferably vertically, by any suitableimeans, Vsuch asv abracket member 16 inftegrally' projecting Ifromsaid casing and rigidly secured by bolts '17 or the like, to the curb rim. Said casing isv preferably .capped at its upper end, as indicated at 18 and* has bushing 19 secured in its lower end'by setscrews 20 or the like.

In the upper portion of the casing 15, a relatively short plunger 27 is slidable, and is spaced above and supported by the plunger 23 through a coiled spring 28, the arrangement being such that the two plungers 23 and 27 areadapted normally to shiftas a unit as regards vertical travel. Thus, when Vsaid plunger is raised, the plunger 27 obstructs the v socket 14 as is shown in Figure 3, wliile in the lowered positions of said plungers, the plunger 27 is disposed below said socket, as Figure 4 illustrates. It is to be understood that the spring 28' is not subjected to appreciable compression through normal travel of the twoplungers. a V
For'driving the cain'21, a coupling pin 29.,
journaled in the bushing19 projects into said cam and rigidly carries a driving pin 3() 'which projects into a diagonal slot 3l formed ins'ai-d cam. Below the casing 15, a drive connection to the pin 429 is established rom one end ot a 'flexible shaft 32 which at its other end `is adapted in any suitable manner to be driven bythe motor 7. (See Figure 1.) In the use of thedescribed construction, when the basket, 2 is stationarythaplungei's c 23 and 27, of their own weight, drop to the lowered position shown in Figure 4,' in which lthe teeth 24 engagebetween the teetli'22 of the cani 21. Under these conditions the cover 8 i-s free to be raised, since the plunger 5 is Y free tov slide from its position disclosed in Figure 8 to that shown in Figure 4 during such raising.. When the basket comes to rest, after an extracting operation, the teeth 24 of plunger 23 will not necessarily be in a position to drop directly between the teeth 22, 4D
but the weight of said plunger andthe parts which it carries is adequate to effect such slight relative rotation of -said plunger and of the cam 21 as will allow a full descent of both plungers A When thecoverS- is lowered, prior to energizing the motor 7, power is applied both to the basket 2and to the shaft 32 whereby the cam Y21 is continuously rotated, resulting in a cam action of the teeth 22 upon they teeth V'.24 to` raise and maintain the plunger 23 in Ythe position shown in Figure. 'In this position said plunger so obstructs the socket 14 Aas to prevent outward sliding of the bolt 12 and consequently locks the cover 8 in its ylowered or closed position. Thus raising of the cove-r Sduring rotation of the basket2 is very positively prohibited.
y If through negligence the motor? is energized while the cover 8 occupies thev raised position shown vin Figure 4, any resulting damage or breakage of parts is avoided through the presence ofthe spring 2B, which lallows the plunger23 to be elevated through ,rotation of the cani 21, althoughthe bolt 12 KVprer'fents upward actuation of the plunger 27.
Thus the device secures the desired result of an automatic locking of the cover in closed position when the basket is being driven, while avoiding breakage` in the event that a drive is applied withoutvrirst closing said cover.
It is of course tobe understood that the particular means disclosed for driving the rotary cam 21 in common with4 the basket is merely by way of example, itbeing obviously feasible to establish the desired common drive in a great variety of other ways.
While it will be apparent that the illustiated embodimentof my invention herein disclosed is well calculated to adequately fulfill the objects and advantages Yprimarily stated, it is to be understood that the invention is susceptible to variation, modification and change within the spirit and scope ofthe subjoined claims. i
What I claim is:
1. The combination with an vextractor comprising acurb, a cover for said'curb,-and a basket rotative in said curb, offa locking vdevice for said cover comprising a'casing into the pathiof the bolt, and a common drive means. vtor .said cam member andthe basket, vThe-combination with an' extractor com# prising a curb, a coverforsaid curb, and va basket rotative in said curb, of aiockingdevice for vsaid covercomprising a sliding plunger having a. cam xportiomfmeans re'- straining said vplunger from rotation, means for restraining said ,cover :against opening movement in one limitingsliding Iposition ofsaid plunger, a cam member rotatively Acoacting with the cam portion of said plunger to` shift the. plunger to its 'lockingposition, and a common drive means for said cam member .and'basket l Y 3. 4. The combination With an extractor comprising a curb, a cover for said curb, a basketrotatable in said curb, a prime mover and a drive connection to the basket from said prime mover, of mechanism for locking the cover in closed position, a rotary control element for said mechanism, adapted, When driven, to maintain lthe cover closed, and a flexible shaft establishing a drive from said prime mover to said control element.
5. The combination with an extractor comprising a curb, a basket rotative therein, and a cover for said curb, of a lock mechanism for said cover comprising a pair of coacting K coaxial cam members, one rotatively eiective to slide the other to a locking position, and a common means for driving the basket and said rotative cam member.`
6. The combination with an extractor comprising a curb, a cover for said curb hinged for opening and closing travel, and a basket rotative in said curb, `oit' a sliding bolt, a connection between the cover andA bolt, efecting sliding of the bolt responsive to opening or closing travel of the cover,-.a plunger slidable into and out of the path of said'bolt and restraining the cover from opening travel When engaged in the path ofthe bolt, a cam member rotatable coaxially With said plunger, to actuate the plunger into the ath of the bolt, and a common drive means or said cam member and basket. i 7. The combination with an extractor comprising a curb, a cover for said curb, and a basket rotative in said curb, ofa. sliding plunger having a substantially V-shaped portion, means for guiding said plungerand for restraining it from rotation, means coacting vvith said plunger for locking said cover against opening movement in a limiting p0- sition of the plunger,-a cam lmember journaled coaxially With said plunger and y formed With a substantially V-shaped cam tooth coacting With'the cam portion of said plunger to actuate the plunger-'to cover-locking position, responsive to rotation of said cam member, and a common means for driving said rotative camvmember vand the extractor basket.
