This invention relates to improvements in razors and is directed more particularly to improvements in razors of the safety type so-called which have removable blades.
The principal objects of the invention are directed to the provision of a razor including a frame having separable parts for'cl'amping a blade therebetween. According to the special features of the invention the blade is formed to have three cutting edges as distinguished from the-two cutting edges of the common form of blade. novel form so that there is no more material used than is used in the well-known forms of double edged blades now in common use.
This makes it possible -to effect economy in manufacturing costs and at the same time provides a blade which has the additional cutting edge. Not only therefore may blades be made economically but their usefulness will be extended over a longer period of time.
According to the preferred form of the invention the blade is made in the form of a triangle to provide an additional cutting edge and the parts comprising the frame are shaped in conformity therewith to provide a razor which is very efficient in its operation. By shaping the blade and parts of the frame as they are a plurality of pointed ends are provided which is advantageous in that the said ends of the blade are convenient for inserting in small spaces.
Various novel features and advantages of the inventionwill be hereinafter referred to in connection with the detailed description to follow. For purposes of disclosure the invention is shown in the form at present pre-' ferred by the accompanying drawings, wherem;

Referring now more in detail to the drawings the invention will be fully described.
In general the razor of the invention includes a plate 2 and a cap 4 for clamping a blade B therebetween. A handle 6 which may be of any suitable form has in its upper end a threaded opening 8 for receiving a threaded shank 10 extending downwardly from the cap 4. This shank 10 passes through an opening 16 in the blade and through an opening 9 in the plate 2 and as the handle 6 is screwed onto the shank 10, the parts are drawn together in a manner which is usual with razors of this kind for clamping the blade and tilting its cutting edges.
According to one novel feature of the invention the plate, blade and cap as in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are made triangular in shape so as to provide angularly disposed side marginal edges and the pointed ends. 30
The sides of the plate 2 are formed to have alternately disposed ridges 12 and slots 14. The upper or outer surface of the plate 2 is not necessarily flat and as in Figs. 1 and 2 ispreferably crowned to conform more or 5 less to the under or inner side of the cap which is alsomore or less curving. This is desirable to tilt the cutting edges'of the blade when the parts are clamped together.
The blade B as shown in'Fig. 3 has a central body portion 15 which is provided with the central aperture 16 for receiving the shank 10 of the cap. Other apertures 17 in the blade may receive projections 11 extending upwardly from the plate 2 so that when the cap, blade and plate are clamped together the parts will be held against relative rotative movements, the projections 11 being received in recesses or depressions 22 n the under side of the cap as shown more clearly in Fig. 4.
Slots 18 extend from opposite corners of i i. the blade B and terminate at the-openings 17. In case the openings 17 are omitted the said slots will terminate at a distance from the central opening 16 so as to provide the body portion which extends around or is 7 adjacent the central opening 16. The blade B is also formed to have notches such as at the corners thereof, as shown.
'With the blade formed as it is and when the cap and plate-are clamped together the side edges of the blade may bend downwardly relative to the main body portion 15 and relative to one another. In this way the edges of the blade will rest on the ridges 12 between the grooves at the marginal sides of the relative to one another.
The projections 11 passing through the blade prevent the parts from relative rotation when in clamped relation. In some cases it may be desirable to provide on the corners of the cap at the under side thereof prongs such as 21, shown in Fig. 4. These prongs will preferably be so arranged that they will lie within the notches 20 of the blade and in that way prevent the blade from rotating. In fact they may be the sole means to prevent the blade from rotating, and in this case it will be desirable to omit the projections 11' and openings 17.
The blade shown In Fig. 3 is placed on the plate 2 and the cap 4 is set thereon so that the shank 10 may extend through the blade B and through the plate 2. The handle 6 is then screwed onto the shank 10. This draws the parts together so as to clamp the blade between the cap and plate. The clamping causes the edges of the blade to bend so that the marginal edges thereof will lie on the plate in a tilting relation overlying the grooves 12 and ridges 14. In this relation the razor is ready for use. As will be observed, by forming the frame, cap and blade as they are in a triangular sha e there is provided three cutting edges an the three pointed ends which are advantageous over the prior art razors.
The pointed ends especially are a decided advantage over present-day razors because it is possible to use the ends of the razors in places where a rectangular blade and frame may not be inserted.
The modification of the invention shown in Figs. 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 will now be described.
Y In this form of the invention a plate 26 similar to plate 2 is provided which is triangular in shape and is provided with grooves and ridges 28 and 30 along its marginal edges and with a central aperture 32. A central circular depression 36 in the upper side of the plate 26 is in communication with radial grooves 34 as shown. The depression and grooves are substantially equal in depth to the'thickness of a blade 38.
This blade 38 is also triangular in shape, has a circular slot 42 and pairs of radiating slots arranged in parallelism which extend from each corner of the blade towards the center to provide bars 43 ,which are joined to a central hub 44. The bars 43 and hub 44 provide what may be called the body portion of theblade, which may bend up and down relative to the side edges of the blade so as tolie in a different plane. A central opening 46 is provided in the hub 44 which may register with the opening 32 in the platefor receiving a shank similar to 10. The blade '38 is placed on top of the plate with the hub and arms in the depression and grooves thereof.
A clamp 50' has a central hub portion 51 provided with a central opening 52 and arms 53 extend from the said hub. Thehub 51 overlies the hub of the blade and the arms 53 overlie the arms thereof. The arms 53 may be provided with flanges 54 at'the sides thereof which may overlie the blade at the outer sides of the slots 40. A cap 48 has a shank 50 for passing through the central openings ofthe plate, blade and clamp and for screwing into a handle similar to the handle 6 previously described.
The lowerside ofthe cap as at 52 is sufficiently large in diameter to overlie the blade atthe outer side of theslot 42, and thereby cooperate with the clamp to clamp the blade onto the plate 26. When the parts are assembled, since the hub 44 of the blade and the bars 43 rest in the depression 36 and grooves 34 the blade is held against turning movements. This is of course desirable because in this way the cutting edges of the at presentpreferred, what I now desire to claim and secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:

A razor of the class described com- .prlslng lncomblnatlon, a plate being trlangular in shape having serrated edges and provided with a depression in the central portion of the upper side thereof and groves radiating therefrom, a blade which is triangular in shape and provided with slots extending radially outward from a circular slot in the central portion thereof to provide a central hub and bars for inserting in the depression and grooves of the plate.
2. A razor of the class described comprising in combination, a plate being triangular in shape having serrated edges and provided with a depression in the central portion of the upper side thereof and grooves radiating therefrom, a blade which is triangular in shape and provided with slots extending radially outward from a circular slot in the central portion thereof to provide a central hub and bars for inserting in the depression and grooves of the plate and a clamp for overlying said blade having a part for bearing on said blade outside of said circular slot.
3. A razor of the class described comprising in combination, a triangular plate provided with a centrally disposed depression and grooves extending outwardly therefrom and a triangular blade provided with a central circular slot and pairs of slots extending outwardly therefrom to form a central hub and radial bars receivable in said depression and grooves of the plate.
4. A razor of the class described comprising in combination, a triangular plate provided with a centrally disposed depression and grooves extending outwardly therefrom and a triangular blade provided with a central circular slot and pair of slots extending outwardly therefrom to form a central hub and radial bars receivable in said depression and grooves of the plate, a clamp hav ing a central hub and arms extending radially therefrom for overlying the hub and bars of said blade and means for securing said plate blade and clamp together.
5. A razor of the class described comprising in combination, a triangular plate provided with a centrally disposed depression and grooves extending outwardly therefrom and a triangular blade provided with a central circular slot and pairs of slots extending outwardly therefrom to form a central hub and radial bars receivable in said depression and grooves of the plate, a clamp having a central hub and arms extending radially therefrom for overlying the hub and bars of the blade and having parts associated with said arms for overlying parts of said blade other than the hub and bars thereof and means for securing said plate, blade and clamp together.
6. A razor of the class described comprising in combination, a triangular plate provided with a centrally disposed depression and grooves extending radially therefrom towards adjacent corners thereof, a blade of triangular shape provided with a centrally disposed circular slot and pairs of spaced slots extending radially therefrom towards adjacent corners thereof to form a central hub and bars radiating therefrom and a clamp having a central hub and arms extending radially therefrom for overlying the hub and bars of the said blade.
7. A razor of the class described comprising in combination, atriangular plate provided with a centrally disposed depression and grooves extending radially therefrom towards adjacent corners thereof, a blade of triangular shape provided with a centrally disposed circular slot and pairs of spaced slots extending radially therefrom towards adjacent corners thereof to form a central hub and bars radiating therefrom, a clamp having a central hub and arms extending radially therefrom for overlying the hub and bars of the said blade and parts associated with said clamp for overlying parts of the blade other than the hub and bars thereof.
8. A razor of the class described comprising in combination, a triangular plate provided with a centrally disposed depression and grooves extending radially therefrom towards adjacent corners thereof, a blade of triangular shape provided with a centrally disposed circular slot and pairs of spaced slots extending radially therefrom towards adjacent corners thereof to form a central hub and bars radiating therefrom and a clamp having a central hub and arms extending radially therefrom for overlying the hub and bars of the said blade, parts associated with said clamp for overlying parts of said blade outside the slots thereof and means for securing said clamp and plate together with the blade therebetween.
9. A razor of the class described comprising in combination, a plate triangular in shape declining on its upper side from a central part to its adjacent marginal edges'and provided on said upper side with a centrally disposed annular depression and grooves extending radially therefrom towards adjacent corners of the said plate, a blade triangular in shape provided with a centrally disposed annular slot and pairs of spaced grooves extending radially therefrom to adjacent corners of said blade forming a central hub and radial bars receivable on said depression and grooves of the plate and a clamp having a central hub and radial arms for overlying said hub and bars of the blade and parts associated therewith for overlying parts of said blade other than said hub and ars.
10. A safety razor blade comprising in combination, a blade triangular in shape provided with a centrally disposed annular slot and pairs of spaced slots extending therefrom towards adjacent corners of said blade to provide separate radial bars connected at their inner end to a central hub portion and at their outer ends to adjacent ends of side portions of the blade.
