IMPROVEMENT IN OPEN SIDE THILLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,378, dated September 19, 1876; application filed May 27, 1876. i
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, CONRAD H. MATTHIES- SEN, of Odell, in the county of Livingston and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Open SideThills,
of which the following is a specification s:
Figure 1 is a top view of my improved, open side thill.

-The object of this invention is to improve the construction of the open side thill for which Letters Patent No. 170,634 were issued to me November 30, 1875, to prevent the harness from being drawn to one side by the springing of the thill, and to enable the holdback straps to be more easily connected with the thill.
The invention will firstbe described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in claim.
A represents the thill, the rear end of which is forked or branched to be attached to the aizle of the vehicle, and the fork'is strengthened by a curved brace, B, extending across the angle of the fork, and having its ends connected with the branchesof the thill.
When the thill A B is made of iron the parts of the rear end are all welded together. When the thill A B is made of wood the rear part is made in three pieces, which are bolted together, as shown in Fig. 2. In this case the end of the piece that forms one fork may have a slot formed in it to receive the bolts, to enable the position of the thill to be adjusted as required. The forward part of the thillis curved into U shape to pass around the breast of the horse, and its end may be bent outward or downward, asmay be desired. To the bow of the thill A are attached two straps, C, which are buckled together beneath the belly of the I horse, to prevent the free end of the thill from springing and causing the harness to draw unevenly upon the horse. To the freeend of the thill A, and to the body of said thill op posite said free end, are attached two short straps, D, for the holdback straps to be attached to. The straps D may be provided with rings for convenience in attaching the holdbackstraps.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A thill, hook-shaped in front, and having in the rear a bifurcation re-enforeed with an intermediate brace, all in one piece, as shown and described.
CONRAD H. MATTHIESSEN.
