.IDYISPLAYY CARD HOLDER Application filed November 10, 1930. Serial No. 494,736.
This invention relates to holders for display cards and the like that are used on freight cars, and its general object is to provide a display card receiving means that not only holds a card or notice securely without damage to the latter, but in a manner whereby the card or notice can be readily seen by a casual observer.
A further object of the invention is to provide a display holder that can be utilized for receiving and removing cards with respect thereto in an easy and expeditious manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide a display holder of the character set forth, that is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and extremely efficient in operation and service.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the sev eral parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying rawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure l is a front elevation of one form of my invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view of a modified form.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken approximately on line 3-3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 4c is a sectional view taken approximately on line ll of Figure 2, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Figure 5 is a detail view illustrating one of the clamping elements which forms a part of the present invention.
Figure 6 is a bottom plan View of the clamping element.
Referring to the drawings in detail, and particularly to the form of the invention as shown in Figures 1 and 3 respectively, the reference numeral 1 indicates a base plate having openings 2 arranged adjacent the edge thereof for the purpose of receiving suitable securing means such as screws or the like for securing the device to a freight car or the like, and arranged at the lower portion of the base plate and secured thereto in any appropriate manner is a tray 3 which is elongated in formation and relatively narrow. The tray 3 is formed from strands of wire and has three sides thereof fixed to the base plate, while the upper side is open for the purpose of receiving a card or notice as will be apparent upon inspection of Figure 3.
Secured to the tray 3 centrally of the upper edge thereof is a' bracket 4.- which is preferably formed from a strip of bendable metal and has its ends curved about two of the upright strands of wire of the tray 3. The bracket 4:. includes converging walls having their forward ends merging into a front portion which has secured thereto through the medium of bolt and nut connections 6, a plate 7, the latter having an opening formed therein and this opening is aligned with a similar opening formed in the front portion for the purpose of receiving the body portion of stem 8 of a plunger. The stem 8 is mounted for slidable movement through the openings and has formed with one end thereof an enlarged head 9. Disposed between the head 9 and the front portion of the bracket 4 is a coil spring 10 which puts the plunger under tension as will be apparent, and urges the same toward the base plate 1, whereby the head is engageable with a card or notice received by the tray 3. The stem 8 has secured thereto a ring 11 which acts in the capacity as a handle for moving the plunger against the tension of its spring.
Secured centrally of the top of the base plate 1 is an angle bracket 12 that is arranged in alignment with the bracket 4, and the bracket 12 is provided with a depending portion 13 that has arranged therein an opening to accommodate a plunger similar to the plunger received by the bracket 4, with the result these plungers cooperate with each other and the trayfor supporting and securing a card or notice in a conspicuous manner with respect to a freight car or the like.
In Figures 2 and 1 I have illustrated a slightly modified form of my invention, wherein I employ a base plate 14 which has secured thereto and arranged in spaced relation with respect to each other. trays 1.5, the latterfbeing' relatively isma'll and, are likewise formed from strands of wire as shown, and secured to the upper portions of the trays 15 are brackets 16 similar-to the bracket 4. The brackets 16 likewise include front portions that have fixed thereto plates, the front portions and plateseach having openings to accommodate plungers for slidable movementtherein, the plungers beingindicated for distinctionby the reference numeral 17 and are identicalwith the plungers previously described as well-as being spring pressed as shown in Figure 4.
In the form of the invention as shown in Figures 2 and 4:, it will be obvious that it is capable of receiving and securing two cards or notices, and the plunger-s 1'? cooperate with the trays 15 for holding ,thecardsor notices. a. 1 From the above-description and disclosure of the drawings, it will be .obviouslthat the form of theinvention' as disclosed in Figures 1 and 3 is utilized for large cardsor notices while that disclosed in Figures 2 and 4 is provided where one or two small notices is necessary, butin any event the holder will not only adequately secure the card or notice with respect to' a freight car, but will in no way damage the cards or notices and the holders are permanent fixtures after they have once been secured tothe sides, doors or other appropriate portions of a freight car.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claims.
lVhat I claim is:
1. A holder comprising a base plate, tray means secured to said base plate, a bracket secured to thetray means and spring pressed means carried by said bracket for securing cards or notice within said tray.
2. A card holder comprising a base plate, an elongated tray secured to the lower portion thereof and having an open top, a spring pressed plunger carried by the tray, and a spring pressed plunger cooperating with the spring pressed plunger first mentioned and the tray respectively for supporting and securing a card or notice within the tray.
' 3;I-n a cardholder, a tray means formed opening aligned with the opening first mentioned and a spring pressed plunger mounted for slidable-n'iovement through said open- I In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
