The bitV or plane iron 13 is clamped against a frog 14 by means of clamp 15 which is provided with the usual clamping inger 16, the usual screw 17 passing through the clamp and into the frog 14 to secure theclamp to the frog; At the lower rear part, of the frog 14, the latter carries a projecting lug 18 in which" the lower end portion of adjusting screw 19 is freely rotatable. The opposite or upper end of adjusting screw 19 has a bearing` in a lug 20, projecting from the rear upper portion of the frog 14 and similar to` lug 18. Axial movement of screw 19 in one direction is prevented by milledhead 21, and in the opposite direction by collar 22 and pin 23, collar 22 bearing against the lower face of 'lug 18, while milled head 21 rests on adjusting lever 24, which is provided near one end thereof with a pin 25 received in an opening in lug 20. Lever 24 is provided with anose 26 received in a longitudinal slot 27 in plane ironr 13 and provides for the transverse adjust;r ment of plane iron 13 by movement of lever Received on screw'19 between lugs 18 and 20 and provid-' ing for the longitudinal Aadjustment of plane iron 13 is a nut 28 having its inner end received in a slot 29 in frog 14 and havy ing a linger 30 which may be received in one of a'plurality of openings 31 in plane iron c transversely through the bed of the plane and through the lower end of the frog.

The plane shown in Figures 5 and )6 of the drawings is provided with a bed 54 on Y which frog 55 is mounted for pivotal movement by means of pin 56 passing transversely through bed 54 and through the lower end of frog 55, frog55 vserving to support bit 57. Longitudinal movement of bit 57 is effected in the more or less usual manner by means of lever 58 pivotally supported on pin 59 in frog 55, lever 58 being provided at one end with va nose 60, and at the other end with` -a yoke, which is received in a groove 61 in nut 62, the latter having a'threaded axial opening 63 infwhich threaded stem 64 is received, stemf64 being fixed in the usual manner in frog 55 and extending rearward- :jly therefrom. Transverse movement of bit 57 is effected inthe usual manner by means.

,It will be' readily understood from the above description of the invention that we have provided a plane in which not only may the plane of the bit be adjusted with respect to the work engaging faces of the plane, but also'a plane in which provision is made for preventing chips from passing into the plane except through the throat normally intended to receive the chips.
While we have shown preferred embodiments of our invention, it will be understood that it is not to belimited to all the details shownbut is capable of modification and variation within the spirit of the. in-
vention and the scope of the appended` Ythrough the Jface, a bit extending through said opening, means for adjusting the plane of the bit with respect to the work engaging face, means movable into position behind said bit forl preventing chips from passing through the opening behind the bit,

In a plane, a bed provided with a work engaging face, a bit, a frog on which said bit is supported, and means for adjusting said frog to vary the angle 'of the plane of thebit with respect to the work engaging face, said last-named means including an adjustable screw passing through the frog and into the bed, said screw serving to secure the bit to the frog.

In a plane, a bed provided with a work engaging face, a bit, a frog on which said bit is supported, and meansforadjusting said frog to vary the angle of they plane of the bit with respect to the work engaging face, said last-named means including an adjustable screw passing through the frog and into the bed and a nut received on said screw and adapted to bear against the `rbed to hold the screw against movement.

In a plane, a bed provided with a work engaging face, a b-it, a frog on which said bit is supported, said frog being adjustably mounted on said base to vary the Y angle of the plane of the bit with respect to the work engaging face, and commonmeans for holding said bit against movement on said frog and said frog against movement on said base.
9. In a plane, a bed provided with a work engaging face, a bit, a frog on which said bit is supported, pivotal means for mounting said frog on said bed to vary the angle of the plane oi the bit with respect to the work engaging face, and common means for holding said bit against movement on said frog and said frog against movement on said base.
