Sept. 8, 1931. M; A. WEST ADJUSTABLE ERASER ATTACHMENT FOR PENCILS Filed Aug. 22, 1950 INVENTOR flaariuellfl. was? ATTOR N EYS Patented Sept 8, 1931 PAT OFFICE MAXWELL A. WEST, OF PORTLAND, OREGON ADJUSTABLE ERASER ATTACHMENT .FOR PENCILS' Application filed August 22, 1930. Serial No. 477,174.
This invention relates to an eraser attachment for pencils. 7
The invention has for its general object the provision of an attachment of the indicated cahracter which will be extremely simple of construction, inexpensive of manufacture, and readily applicable to any pencil. Among the benefits and advantages of the attachment may be enumerated the following: By a slight turn of the eraser sleeve or the pencil relative to the sleeve, the pencil will force the eraser out of the sleeve as may be desired; the eraser will always be snug in its sleeve, and by reason of its novel construction cannot become stuck on account of distentlon or expanslon of the eraser; the eraser may be almost if not entirely used thereby eliminating waste; a new eraser may be readily put into use whenever the occasion arises; the eraser will not deteriorate since it will not be exposed to the air; and the attachment may bereadily removed so that when a pencil becomes short or stubby the same may still be used with an extension at tachment.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view of an attachment constructed in accordance with the present invention shown applied to a pencil, a portion of the latter being shown;
Figure 2 is a central longitudinal section through the attachment and a portion of the pencil;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the eraser.
Referring now more particularly to the several'views of the drawings it will be apparent that the attachment of the present invention, generally stated, comprises a tubular member or sleeve 10 and an eraser 11. The tubular member or sleeve 10 is open at each end, and is adapted to receive therein the eraser 11, and one end is adapted to receive one end of the pencil 12. The attachment is adapted to be used advantageously with 60 a pencil noncircular in cross section although the same may be used with a pencil round in cross section.
More specifically stated, the attachment components consist of the following distinguishing features. The sleeve 10 is made preferably of metal and the same is provided with threads 13 at or near the end thereof which receives the end of the pencil. It will therefore be understood that the sleeve 10 is adapted for threading engagement with the pencil 12, and will therefore be movable axially or longitudinally thereof. The remainder of the sleeve 10 above the threads will be of uniform diameter but, if desired, may be provided with flats 14 to prevent the penoil from rolling. The sleeve 10 may also be milled as at 15 to rovide a gripping surface.
The eraser 11 consists of a body which is preferably round in cross section and which is made of erasive material, preferably a high grade'rubber. The eraser 1 has a section 16 of relatively increased size or diameter, and is preferably located at one end, as shown most clearly in Figure 3. The eraser 11 may be readilyinserted into the sleeve 10 by a simple twist of the eraser and inward push thereon. The enlarged end section 16 is of a size to snugly fit within the sleeve 10 and contact therewith, and'the remaining portion of the eraser, which is of less diameter than the internal diameter of the sleeve 10, will be very slightly spaced from or be just out of contact with the adjacent section of the sleeve 10. The enlarged section 16 of the eraser will abut the end of the pencil projecting into the threaded end of the sleeve 10, as shown most clearly in Figure 2.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that a slight turn of the sleeve relatively to the pencil or a slight turn of the pencil relatively to the sleeve will cause the pencil to exert endwise pressure on the enlarged section 16 with the result that the eraser will be forced axially of the sleeve 10 to present the desired projecting end for the obvious purpose. In doing this the eraser 11 will not be distended or cannot expand at the center or intermediate portion thereof due to the provision of the enlarged section 16. It will therefore be apparent that the eraser 11 may be adjusted at will and will always present an end portion which will be firm yet capable of being used for making the necessary erasures. It will also be apparent that the other benefits and advantages hereinabove set forth may be had.
What is claimed is:
1; An eraser attachment for pencils com- I prising the combination of an open-ended tubular member adapted to receive in one end thereof one end of a pencil, and an eraser having a relatively enlarged section, said eraser being receivable in the opposite end of the tubular member with said enlarged section in contact with the tubular member, whereby the eraser may be moved to a projecting position in relation to the tubular member, upon the relative adjustment of the tubular member and the pencil, said enlarged section of the eraser in engagement with the tubular member serving to retain the eraser in the projecting position.
2. An eraser attachment for pencils comprising the combination of an open ended tubular member having a threaded end section adapted to receive therein one end of a pencil, whereby the tubular member and pencil may be moved longitudinally in relation to each other, and an eraser having a relatively enlarged section, said eraser being receivable in the opposite end of the tubular member with said enlarged section in contact with the tubular member, whereby the eraser may be moved to a projecting position in relation to the tubular member, upon the relative adjustment of the tubular member and the pencil, said enlarged section of the eraser in engagement with the tubular member serving to retain the eraser in the projecting position.
3. In an eraser attachment for pencils, a tubular member, and an eraser having an enlarged section, said tubular member being adapted to receive the eraser therein with the enlarged section in contact with the tubular member, whereby the eraser may be moved endwise to a projecting position in relation of the tubular member by exerting pressure on one end of the eraser, and said enlarged section of the eraser in engagement with the tubular member, serving to retain the eraser in the projecting position,
