This invention relates to display boxes of the type having front and rear box sections hinged together along the line of their two contiguous walls and adapted to lie either side by side for display purposes or end to end for storage purposes. It is the primary object of my invention to produce a box of this character at a lower cost than has hitherto been possible and preferably out of cardboard which has been printed upon one side only. In carrying out my invention I form the two box sections as separate units, each formed out of a sheet of cardboard which has been finished only on one side and each section having integral means by which the normally unfinished interior rear wall of the section is covered up with a finished surface. These two separate sections are hinged together by integral tabs joining them at their normal hinge lines.
The invention will now be described in connection with the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a display box embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the rear box section;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the front box section;
Fig. 4; is a sectional detail showing the interconnection of the two box sections;
Fig. 5 is a development of the blank used in forming the rear box sections; and
Fig. 6 is a development of the blank used in forming the front box section.
The display box comprises a front section 10 and rear section 11 which in the embodiment shown have their bases on the same plane when the box is in its display position. The front section has a rear wall 12 (Figs. 3 and 6) to which, in the form of blank chosen for illustration, is connected in order a side wall 1.3, a front wall 14 and a 45 second side wall 15. When the blank is folded up, as shown in Fig. 3, the side wall 15 is pasted to a tab 16 projecting from the opposite side of the rear wall 12. Attached to the front section 14 is a bottom 17 of the tuck end type having the usual tab 18 hinged thereto. Tabs 19 and 20 are hinged to the 1930. Serial No. 463,385.
two side sections 13 and 15 cc overlie the bottom 17 when the blank is folded up.
This blank is finishedupon one side only, that being the side which forms the exterior of the folded up box section. This finishing mayconsists of'printing, lithographing or any other .form of decoration. It will be seen that the front surface of the rear wall 12 in F ig. 3 is unfinished, and in the use'of this box there is generally a portion of this wall which is exposed above the line of goods, stacked in it. In order to cover up this surface, a flap or extension 21 is pivoted to the rear wall 12 along a crease line 22; and this extension is folded over when the box is assembled, as shown in Fig. 1, to present its finished surface toward the front of the box. The-extension may be held in its folded over positionby a tab 23 of any desired form struck up from the rear wall 12. Formed substantially along the crease line 22 but preferably along its under side (as viewed in Fig.3) are a pair of slots 241,
the purpose of which. will appear later.
,The rear box section 11 is constructed as shown in Figs. 2 and 5, althoughthe form of blank show-nis only illustrative. It consists of a rear wall 25 to which in the illu trated blank are hinged in turn a side wall 26, a front wall. 27 and a second sidewall 28. As in the case of the front box section,
the side wall 28 is folded over and adhesively secured to a tab 29 extending from the opposite side of the rear wall 25-. A bottom wall 30 is attachedin this case to the rear wall 25 and carries the usual tuck-in tab 31. The
side tabs which coact to form the bottompresent a finished side toward the'front with an additional display card 37 integrally attached to it. A tab 38 struck up from the rear wall may serve to hold the flap 34 in its display position.
The manner of securing the two box sections together in the present case differs from constructions previously proposed and possesses certain advantages which will now be described. Struck up from the front wall 27 of the rear box section are tabs 40,
here shown as two in number, which are hinged to the wall along the crease lines 41. It is preferable to locate these crease lines slightly below the upper edge 42 of the front wall 27 as this weakens the upper portion of the wall a minimum amount and at the same time permits the tabs being formed from the body of the wall without necessitating the use of additional stock. Each of the tabs is formed with wings 43 hinged to the body of the tab along crease lines '44. If the wings are folded over along the crease lines each tab is sufficiently narrow to pass through the slots 24 in the front box section previously described. hen the wings are then opened out, retraction of the tabs through the slot is impossible. It will be noted from Fig. 2 that these wings are located some distance below the crease line 11 of the tabs. This is to permit the tabs "being folded back up along the rear face of the wall 27, then forwardly across the edge 42, and finally through the slots '24 in the continuous wall 12. This manner of attachment is shown in section in Fig. 4.
r; ing the hinging device and of presenting a finished surface for the otherwise unfinished rear wall of the front box section.
The box sections and their attaching means have been described in some details, and specific blanks for their production have been illustrated. It will be understood, however, that variations in design will be made to suit individual conditions or preference.
What I claim is:
'1. A display box of the type having front and rear box sections standing side "by side when the box is arranged for display and end to end when the box is arranged for storage, characterized by one or more tabs struck out of the front wall of the rear box section below the upper edge thereof,
said tabs being folded .up along the rear face of said wall, across the edge of said wall and through slots located in the front box section at substantially the hinge line between the sections, the tabs having foldable wings extending wider than the slots to retain the tabs in place.
2. A display box as claimed in claim 1, having an extension of the rear Wall of the front box section folded forwardly over said rear wall to conceal the portions of the tabs projecting through the slots.
3. A display box of the type having front and rear box sections standing side by side when the box is arranged for displayrand end to end when the box is arranged for storage, in which each box section is formed separately from a single sheet of material finished on one side only with the finished side on the exterior of the box, one or more tabs struck out of the front wall of the rear box section below the upper edge thereof, said tabs being folded up along the rear face of said wall, across the edge of said wall and through slots located in the front box section at substantially the hinge line between the sections, the tabs having foldable wings extending wider than the slots to retain the tabs in place, an extension of the rear wall of the front box section folded forwardly over said rearwall to conceal the .portions of the tabs projectin through the slot and to present a finishec surface over the exposed rear wall of the front box section, and a flap. hinged to the upper edge of the rear wall of the rear box .section folded over to present a finished surface over the exposed rear wall of the rear'box section.
In testimony whereof I have afiix'edymy signature.
