I lll d WALTER @EN EYCK, @F 'WESTFXELD, NEW JERSEY, ASSEIGNOR T0 BEAUX,
ENClRPORATED, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CRPRATKON @F NEW Dissent censors.
Application tiled January 9, 13M. Serial tifo. eeoe.
To all whom t may concern J* Be it known that l, Wirren l). TEN Eros., a citizen ot the United States, and f a resident of Westield, in the county of 5 Union and 'State et New Jersey, have'ing rl`his invention relates to-display cartons lo of that class, the blanks for which are die-cuty from sheets of card-board andA folded along die-impressed score lines, .and adapted for containing mechandise and for. being opened up tol display .a portion ofthe carton andl t5 its contents. ri`he object of my improvements is to provide an article of the class specified, theblank for which may be completed in one operation of stamping, which is adapted tor receiving any printed matter i3@ all -upon one face 4of the blank, and which blank may be readily .folded into receiving condition for merchandise, may be readily and securely closed for shipment and readily opened up and erected into dis lay form. With these ends in view and ot ers which will appear hereinafter, my. improved article 'comprises 'features which are illustrated in their preferred embodiment inthe drawings accompanying this specification, where Figure l is a plan view of the blank from which my improved carton is folded. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the carton partly folded. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the carton fully erected in display condition. Fig. 4c is a fragmentary perspective view illustratingl the assemblingv of a p01;- tion of the carton. Fig. 5 is a lengthwise cross-sectional elevation ot the carton cor- 3. Figo is a fragmentary perspective view of the underside of the carton showing the erection ot' the easel member el the device. Fig. 7 is a view similar to that ot" Fig. 6 and showing a modieation of what is shown in Fig. 6. The scale of Figs'.4 l to l inclusive is equal, the scale o'-Figs; 5 to 7 inclusive is equal and about twice that ot the earlier liguresa f The blank, shown laid dat in ig. l, from which my 'improved carton is formed, has several features of advantage and economy, such as,`minimum waste 'in cuttin `trom the sheet, the voutline ot vthe blank ing such as to permit the cutting oi successive blanks responding with theassembled view of Fig.-
in part from portions normally wasted; also the blank is unitary and suitable tor :torrie ing the resultant carton` without the addition of any loose pieces and entirely without um or other extraneous 'tasteningsg' said blank also has provision for reinforcing several walls ofthe carton by duplex-thickness et wall, thereby permitting a minimum thickness of stock from which to cnt the blanli;l furthermore, both when the carton is assembled, and 'closed in shipping condition and when erected tor display, all Venposed faces of the several walls are from one and thesame face ot `the blanlt,`which permits the use ot one tace stoclr and en` ables the printer to einbellish the carton with legends and decorationsby printing on one side of the stock only. Also the body support, for use when displal ing the conf tents of the carton, is termed rom the body portion ot the blank and another portion of the blank provides a talee bottom to cover the hole lett by the outward folding et said support. l
Directing attention now more particularly to the drawings, in the following description and claims all references to width will be read vertically relatively to Fig. l., and al references to' length will be read transversely relatively to that figure. My proved blank, Fig. l, comprises aplnrality of attached members preferably demarlied `from one another by score Klines and along some edges ot some orn said members by cutthrough separating lines. Body-'bottoni 2 is bounded widthwise by score lines 3 and d, and lengthwise'by score lines 5 and ti. Ad- 'oining said bottom, at line his body-side )I extending widthwise the hlanlr trom score line 4 to similar parallel line '8. Seid side is of duplex character, comprising portions 7a and 7* divided by score line 9 rainning lengthwise midway between lines d end 8 and parallel therewith. Extending width! wise 'from said side l, 'is wing l@ et substantially equal length with side 7 and bottom 2 and having a width substantially equal to the vwidth et saidbottom. Adjoining .bottom 2 at its upper edge 3, is opposite duicc .comprising equal portions 13aand .13, di-
vided by score line lll running crosswise between lines o and l and parallel therewith'. Said end .13 has a length equal to the 'Width of side 7,' and a width equal to the width of bottom 2.- Extending lengthwise from said end 13 is relatively short wing 16, preierably of a length similar to the width of wing l2 and orl a width not more than that of endll. 'Extending widthwise in either direction from that half portion of end 13 lyingneirt bottom 2, are tabs 17 and 18, each having a length 'slightly less than half the length oli end 13 and each having a width about equal to half the width of body' 2. Single body-end l9.is located opposite end 13 relatively to body 2 and has a length from line 5- to line 2() equal to one half the'lengtb of end i3. Said end i9 is providedwith opposite tabs 21 and.V 22, similar to and simil larly located as tabs l? and 18 el? end i3.
That portion of .the blanlr of Fig. l"
already described, ending at line 20, is suiicient io-r folding into a coverless carton ci practical 'utility and, if end 13 is made duplex. and provided with lengthwisetab, all
Asimilar to end i3, a still more eiiicient con tainer is provide of single body-end i9, said extending porlllowever, in most cases, itis preferable to provide said container with a cover 23. This cover extends lengthwise from the 4outer edgel() of end i9 a distance subst-ao tially'eqnal tothe length ot the body-bottom and said cover has a width equal to the width olf body-end i9.` Said cover may be provided with opposite tabs 24C and 25 extending widthwise therefrom, each of said tabs having a width substantially hall the width et one oi' the body-sides, as 11. The length of each of said tabs is preferably 'somewhat less than. the length of said cover.
ln some cases'it is preferable to divideI said tabs 2d and 25 midway their length, respectively7 into two contiguous tabs on each cover edge, eis-24a and 24h on the upper edge and 25a and 25 on the lower edge, for: purposes which will presently appear. ln some cases cover 23'is provided with portion 26, extending lengthwise from boundary line 27 of said cover, a distance equal to the length tion being provided with opposite tabs 28 I. and 23 extending. widthwise therefrom.
' oil' for Said tabs are preferably of a width slightlyv rasierer tively. 'Said lines terminate at the opposite roots of a cut-through line 32 of some pleasing contour, herein illustrated as approximately a 'semicircld in reaching' toward single-body-end 19, whereby .is lformed a semidisc-like member 23B. ln some cases it is desirable .to break line'32'at its mid-portion', thereby leaving member'2la connected 3l, 35, midway widthwise sides 7 and l1,
respectively, are provided. Each of said slots has a length slightly greater than the -length of the respective tab with which it is engaged', and said slots arel located near end 19. i For supportingV the carton' when assembled in inclined display position, Figs. 3 and 5, body-bottom 2 has formed therefrom by cut-throu i lines and connected therewith along widthwise score line 36 near end 1.9, lengthwise member 37 adapted for-folding into a body su port. .Said member 37 comprises a plnra ity of lengthwise` panels, as 37237", 37 and 37d, and istemporarily retained in lace by unsevered portions 41', 42 and 43. ach of said panels has a width preferably somewhat less than the width of bottom 2, so as not to weaken said bottom unduly, and each panel has a length approximately equal. to the height it is desired to raise that end of the assembled carton vunder which. vsaid bodysupport is erected.l
ln practice, panel 379. is made somewhat longer than panel 37?, for purposes which will presently appear. Cut widthwise through bottoni 2, between and parallel with score line 36 and endif?, is slot 38, panel 37d being adapted for engagement with said slot when the member 37 is folded into supporting position. erablyi slightly longer-than the distance between'slot 38 and edge 5 'of body-end 19,
meI
ll@ Alsopanel 37 isl preso that when said member 37 is folded into l supportin position the free end of panel 37 will a ut against end i9, thereby relieving the edge of slot 38 of strain. When member '37 comprises four panels, as shown in Fig) .1, panel 37, next to panel 37 which is hinged alongline 36 tothe box bottom 2,.
may be provided with opposite'wings' 39 and 0 extending from the sides thereof, respectively, each of said wings being of a contour` adapted for dllingthe quadrangular space formed at each side when said member 37! is folded, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6.
Directing attention now particularly to` those igures succeeding Fig. 1, the blank of Fig. l is folded as follows: Ends i3 and 19 are folded upwardly at right anglesto tom between said end and said score line, that panel at the free end of said support member bein adapted for engagement with said slot, sai Wings being adapted for locking said body support in erected position.
-5. A blank for a folding carton including in combination, a body-bottom, opposite body-ends and opposite body-sides, one of said body-sides being provided with a Wing adapted for folding into the carton 'for forming a Abottom lining, said body-bottom having formed therefrom by cut-throu h `lines and connected thereto alon a widt wise score line near one body-,en a lengthwise member adapted for folding into a body-support, said member comprising four lengthwise panels, the panel* next to that ane]4 portion which is connected' tov the body-bottom having a Wing extendin from either edge thereof, and a slot wi thwise4 said bottom between said bodyend and said score line, that panel at the free end of said support member being adapted for en ,agement with said slot, said Wings being a apt- Lasagne ed kfor locking said body support in erected position.
