' PLATE LIFTER Filed April 26. 1930 FKK/"K fffocsacm ATTORNEY Patented Sept. 1, 1931 yUNITED STATESA FRANK A. ECRAN, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK PLATE LIVFTER" Application filed April 26,
rihis invention relates to household instruments and particularly to lifting devices, by which articles, such as plates or dishes, not conveniently movable, because of being overheated or otherwise rendered unfit for manipulation, may be securely lcarried without manually touching such articles. Y
@ne of the objects of the invention is the provision of a lifting device by which articles, whether the latter be formed with flat outer marginal portions or flanges, as in the case of plates, or with annular beads, such as other articles are provided with, may be positively gripped at their1 opposite side walls, 1 5 and also at opposite points of their flanges or beads, in order that, While performing the lifting operation, the equilibrium of the articles may be securely maintained.
Since the lifting device includes a pair ofY a@ cooperating, oppositely disposed members,
another object ofthe invention is to so construct the device that dishes or articles of.
different size may, at leastv within the range of ordinary dimensions, be accommodated by a single pair of members, which are preferably pivcted at a single point. v
Other objects and advantages ofthe invention will be hereinafter specifically pointed out, or will become apparent, as the specification proceeds.
TWith the above indicated objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel constructions and combinations and arrangenment of parts, clearly described in the followf ing specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which latter show embodiments of the invention as at present preferred. Y y
In said drawings:
Fig. 1 is anpelevational view of my improved lifting device;
Y Fig. 2 is a lateral or edge view of the same;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged horizontal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1; and Y Fig. 4 is a section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
' Referring particularly to the drawings by reference characters, the numeral A10 designates a leg of one member of the lifting device, which leg has continuous therewith a 1930. Yserial no. 447,680.
terminal or tang'll, on which Vis mountedthe hand gripy lportion12 of a handle 13. While theleg 10 is concave onits inner side, another member of the lifting device includes a leg 14 which, having a tang 15 and a handle 16, with a hand grippor'tion 17, is also concave on its inner side, to cooperate with the first mentioned leg for lifting an article, such as a plate 18.
lExcept for the opposite curvature of the legs 10, 14, and the continuation thereof'adj acent the-tangs 11, 15, the members of the device, which are crossed and pivoted at 19, are alike. These members are easily constructed, as from a pipe or hollow tube, which is split, and formed with opposite flat flange portions 20, 21, as seen in Fig. 3, between which the'bead or flange of an article to lbe lifted, such as a plate 18, is received. By inserting a strip of rubber 22, or other yieldable material between and against the inner surfaces of these flanges the latter are prevented from injuring or chipping the flange of the plate.
Vhile one of the members of the device, or the portion 10, at one end thereof, is split as at 23 (see Fig. 4) the other member is formed with a single strip 24, which, at the pivot 19, is movable between the said split portions 23@ By turning the handles 13, 16, into a position at right angles to the leg portions, as indicated in Figi-2, the ysaid handles are disposed nearer the center of gravity of the plate 18 or f article carried, so that the said article is carried more efficiently, the handles being turned ydownwardly-,towards the depending article.
But the handles may also be turned upwardly.
Vhile only two points of the periphery of the annular flange of the plate may contact with the inner surface of the legs 10 and 14, as at 25,26 such stability is obtained by providzng in-reaching flanges on the said legs, y
.which contact with the flange of the plate,
as at 27, 28, 29, 30, that great freedom of moveV ment may be practiced while carrying the plate withoutany danger of the latter becom ing displaced.y y
The hereinbefore Vdescribed construction admits of rconsiderable modification without departing from the invention, therefore, l
do not Wish to be limited to the precise arrangements shoWn and described, which are aS aforesaid, by Way of illustration merely. In other Words, the scope of protection contem plated is to be taken solely from the appended claims, interpreted as broadly as is consistent with the prior art.
What is claimed as new is:
1. Adevice for lifting plates, comprising a pair of curved relatively movable members,
pivot means connecting said members iny crossed relation, said members including a pair of handles, and a leg continuousWi-th each of said handles and including a pair of parallel spaced lianges, the flanges ofthe respective legs adapted to embrace opposite sides of the fiange of a: plate to be lifted.
' 2.` In a lifting device of the class described comprising a pair of crossed pivoted menibers, each of saidinemhers including a handle, a pair of curved legs continuous with the handles and disposed at right angles to said handles, said legs including portions for contacting with diametrically opposed points ofV the peripheral edge of the flange of an annular plate, and flange portions overlapping portions of said first -flange for embracing said first flange on opposite sides of the latter distant from the line of the aforesaid diametrically opposed points. K
In testimony whereof I hereby aiiix my signature.
FRANK A. IIORAN.
