Sept. 1, '1931. N. F. cLAYoRN MARCEL WAVE WRAPPER CLAMP Original Filed April 12. 1929 INVENTOR WITNESS ATTORN EY Patented Sept. 1, 1931 UNHTE TES NOB-MAN FRANCIS oLAYBonn, or DECATUR. enonem MABCEL WAVE VJB-AIBPER CLAIM}? Application filed April 12, 1929, Serial No. 354,680. Renewed'February 14,1931; 1
This invention relates to clamps for securmg protective wrappers in position on hair curls while the are beino' Jermanentl waved.
An object of the invention is to provide a clamp of this character which will positively clamp the Wrapper in position and yet W111 prevent pulling the hair upon disengagement of the clamp from the wrapped curl.
Further the invention provides a clamp embodying a plurality of pivotally connected members having a cam action whereby such members are retained in clamped engagement with the wrapped curl.
The invention also contemplates a clamp wherein one of the pivoted members is provided with an auxiliary resilient clamping member which cooperates with the other pivoted member in clamping'curls of various cross sectional areas.
With the preceding and other objects and advantages in mind, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, constructions and arrangements of parts and operations to be hereinafter more fully described,
claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective of my improved clamp in clamping engagement with a Wrapped curl;
Fig. 2 is a perspective of the clamp in open Fig. 3 1s a transverse sectionof the device tion disclosed in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, a
rounded jaw 5 having a rearwardlyextending straight shank or handle 6 is provided. The clamping member is formed with a slot 7 in its inner edge which is curved rearwardly from the forward end of the jaw and terminates at a point to one side of the handle 6.
- The slot increases in width from its inner end to its outer end so that substantially the entire inner edge of the-jaw is open for the entrance of the wrapped cur-l. T
Cooperating with the jaw 5 is a cam .10 having a handle 11 identicalto the handle 6.. The cam 10 lies upon the jaw 5 and is pivotal-, ly connected with the forward end of the latter bya pivot 12 passing through the cam and jaw. Inpractic'e the handlestr and 11 are movedv towards 'each other. to cause the cam to moveover the slot 7 In order to limit the vmovement ofthe handles and to cause them to lie in superime posed parallel relation the handle 6. is formed with an L-shaped keeperat its outer edge and which extends transversely of the handle to receive the handle 11 asdisclosed in Fig. 1. It will be observed that when the jaw and cam are moved towards each other the walls of the slot 7 and the cam will at all times create pressure in a line which intersects the pivot I 12 and the longitudinal center of the slot.
In order to clamp curls having a cross sectional area which is insufiicient'to fill the slot an auxiliary clamping jaw in the form of a straight leaf spring15 extends across the upper face of the jaw 5 intermediate the ends of the slot and has one end riveted or otherwise secured to the clamp as at 16. An upstanding pin or stop 17 projects from the up per face of the jaw adjacent the rivet 16 to constitute an abutment for the spring. The end of the spring is in the path of movement of the cam so that when the slot is substantially filled by the curl the spring will be moved beyond the inner end of'the slot by the cam.
To facilitate lateral separation of the handles the extremities of the latter are bent 'toprovide divergent finger engaging elements In Figs. 4 to 6, inclusive, a modification of I the clamp is disclosed. Inthis construction a cam 18 is pivoted upon each face of the jaw 5 so that this aw will move between the two cams. In this instance the jaw 5 is formed with a flat longitudinally extending handle with oppositely extending L-shaped keepers 19 formed along one edge to be engaged by the handles 11 of the cams when the device is in operative position.
What is claimed is:
1. A clamp comprising a jaw having a slot therein, a cam member pivoted to the jaw and movable over the slot, and a resilient auxiliary jaw attached to one face of the jaw and 5 bridging the slot and cooperating with the cam in clamping an object when such object is of insufiicient cross sectional area to substantially fill the slot.
2. A clamp comprising a jaw having a slot therein, a cam member pivoted to the jaw and movable over the slot, and a resilient auxiliary jaw attached to one face of the jaw and bridging the slot and cooperating with the cam in clamping an object when such object is of insufficient cross sectional area to substantially fill the slot, the free end of the resilient jaw lying in the path of the cam whereby such jaw is moved beyond the inner end of the slot when the cam is in full actuzo ated position.
5 3. In a clamp a pair of relatively flat clamping members pivotally connected together at one end and one of which has a slot therein, a resilient auxiliary jaw extending across the slot intermediate the ends of the latter and disposed in the path of movement of the other jaw and having one end fixed, and an abutment projecting laterally from the slotted jaw with which the resilient jaw engages when the other jaw is moved against such auxiliary jaw.
