Patented i Sept. l, 1931 UNITE!)y STATES Pfig'illltl'l' @FFICE ALLEN LOOMIS, OF ELKHART, INDIANA/, ASSIGNR TO C. G. CSEN, LTD., OF ELKHART, INDIANA, A CORPEIEATGN OF INDKA TUNING DEVICE FR VI Application filed May l?, S
This invention relates to wind musical instruments of the reed type, and particularly to clarinets.
The principal object ot my invention is to 5 ff-.1 vide an improved combined timing device and joint for connecting the mout-- piece and body of a reed musical instrument.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved tuning barrel joint for 'ill iirtal clarinets, and the like, wherein a very effective, and durable non-advancing adjusting nut is incorporated.
Other objects of the invention are nientioned and described herein.
The preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is an exterior view in elevation showing the assembled timing barrel joint; Fi Q a similar view in section;
Fig. 3 illustrates an exterior elevational View of an assembly of the mouthpiece holder, the guide member, the inside tubular slide, and the retaining or thrust ring for Zlio anjusting nut;
Fig. 4 is an exterior elevational view of the outside tubular sliding sleeve;
Fig. 5 is a perspective of the same niember;
Fig. (i
a sectional elevational view of the adjusting nut;
Fig. 7 is a section taken on line 77 of Fig. 2, and
Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional fragment 85I illustrating the connections between the parts which form the complementary fiange and groove connection between the adjusting nut and the mouthpiece holder.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views on the drawings.
Referring now to the drawings, and especially to Figures l and 2 wherein an as- Y sembly ot my improved timing barrel oint is illustrated, the device comprises, generally, the tubular mouthpiece receiver or holder l, the ring-like pronged guide member 2 rigidly secured thereto, the inside Vtubular slide' 3, the outside tubular sliding member Il which slidably encompasses the i SICAL INSTRUMENTS Serial No. 4535115.
lide and which is actuated by the o tubular adjusting nut 5, and the ring 6 which takes the thrust of the sting nut when the latter is rotat(Vl '5 lhe sleeve il may be provided with a cork sleeve 4 wi h is adapted to lit and seal within the tubular end of a clarinet, or like instrument. The tubular upper end ot' the guide member is provided with an annu- CL) lar rifvllt angular llange 8 which projects ontnairlly tneretroin and which may be soldered to the lower end of the mouthpiece ller l, said guide member being provided with a pair of opposed prongs 9 and l0 einen entend longitudinally of the slide 3 into the interstices of a similar )air of opposed pronos ll and l2 formed on the end ot the tubular sliding sleeve el.
The numeral 5 indicates the tubular ad- 70 justing nut which encompasses one end of the sleeve e and the prongs of elements 2 and l, there being a screw thread connection at 13 between one end of the bore of said adjusting nut and the exterior of member i adjacent the base of the prongs 1l and lil. The opposite end of the nut 5 is provided with an integral annular right angular outwardly extending flange ll which is rotatably arranged in the annular circumferential bearing groove l5 which is formed between the l'lange 8 of member 2 and the annular inwardly projecting thrust flange 16 formed on the retaining ring G which is mounted upon the holder l.
The retaining or thrust ring G may be screw threaded to the exterior of the holder l at 17 the thrust ilange 1G thereotextending inwardly te a point below the guide flange 8, and solder may be applied to said screw thread connection to eiiiect a more rigid connection tliereat. The ring G may be provided also with an annular interior shoulder 18 which lits snugly against the flange 8, adjacent the outer periphery of the latter, of member 2 to effect the proper clearance between the adjusting nut [lange l-l and the walls oi the groove l5 in which said nut flange is rotatably arranged and retained. Preferably the slide 3 is soldered in the bore 100 of member 2, the upper end thereof terminating flush with the face of the guide flange 8 of member 2.
It will be evident from the foregoing description and arrangement of the parts of my improved tuning Vbarrel joint that rotation of the adjusting nut will cause longitudinal sliding movement of the sleeve 1l, whereby the air column within the joint unit may be lengthened or shortened at will, according to the direction of rotation of said nut, thereby altering the tene of the instrument.
I claim:
1. A combined tuning device and joint of the character described comprising a tubulaimouthpiece holder, a. ring-like guide member provided with a flange which Ais rigidly mounted on vsaid holder, a tubular slide member rigidly mounted in said guide member, a tubular .member slidably encompassing said slide member and slidably connected with said guide member, atubular rotatable adjusting-nut., a complementary spiral connection between said adjusting nut and the tubularv slidable member, and a complementary`flangeand groove connection between said .adjusting nutV and the mouthpiece holder to prevent longitudinal movement of saidnut when the latter is rotated, said connection including a ring-like thrust member which is connected with the exterior oi? said mouthpiece holder.
2. A combined'tuning device and joint of the character described comprising a tubular meuthpieceholder, a ring-like guide member of lesser diameterzthan saidfholderand provided with a flange which is rigidly mounted on said sholder, a tubular slide member rigidlyinonnted in said guide member bore,
a tubular member slidably encompassing said slide member and 'slidably connected with said guide member, a .tubular rotatable adjusting nut, a complementary spiral coninection between said adjusting nut and the tubular slidable member,and a. complementaryflange andvgroove connection between said adjusting lnut and the mouthpiece holder to preventlongitudinal movement of 1 said nut when the latter is rotated, said connection including a member encompassing said mouthpiece holder and an annular inwardly vprojecting thrust flange integral therewith.
y3. A combined tuning device and `joint of the character described comprisinga tubuflar mouthpiece holder, a ring-like .guide member of' lesser diameter than said holder and vprovided with a vflange which is rigidly mounted on said holder, 4a tubular slide member rigily mounted in saidguide member b0re,\a tubular member slidably encompassing saidslidemember and slidably connected with said guide member, a tubular l rotatable adjusting nut, a complementary spiral connection between said adjusting nut and the tubular slidable member, and a complementary flange and groove connection between said adjusting nut and the mouthpiece holder, said connection including a member encompassing said holder and which is provided with an annular shouldered portion which engages said guide member flange and an inwardly projecting thrust flange integral therewith.
4.-. A combined tuning device and joint of the character described comprising a tubular mouthpiece holder, a ring-like guide member of lesser diameter than said holder and provided with a right angular outwardly eX- tending annular flange which is rigidly connected with one-end of said holder, a tubular slide member mounted rigidly in the bore of' said guide member, a tubular member slidably encompassing said slide member and slidably connected with said guide member, a tubular rotatable adjusting nut provided with an outwardly projecting annular flange adjacent one end thereof, a complementary spiral connection between said adjusting nut .f1
and the tubular slidable member, and means forming an annularbearing groove for said adjusting nut flange to prevent longitudinal movement of said nut upon rotation thereof', said means comprising said guide member flange and a ring-like thrust member which is connected with the exterior of said mouthpiece holder.
