Description

Aug. 25, 1931. .1. J. CALLAHAN ET AL 5 I CLOSURE FOR COLLAPSI BLE'TUBES Filed April 23. 1950 J nunn number UNITED S AT PATE JGHN J. QALLAHAN AND winners 1). McDERMOTT, ion
Thisinvention and caps for bottl MASSACHUSETTS r CLOSURE non ooLLArsiBLn "runes Application s; April 23,
relates to closures, stoppers, es, collapsibletubes or other containers, and is particularly adaptable for use on collapsible tubes of thetype in which dental cream, shaving cream,
shnilar materials It'lias for its proved formof stopper balms, and other are packed and dispensed.
ob1ects,
or cap of comparative simple construction, composed of a minisive and simple threading of caps; may be both removed and tive side pressure of the cap; to provide a construction available either side, which a side pressurebreaks of parts andthereiore inexpen to manutacture; to
to prov de a cap which avoid the replaced by a posh thuinb against the self lifting and sell scaling for opening from when the cap is sub'ectcd to the'seal bylifting the cap, provides clearance for the cap in tipping from the container and clearance again in replacement thereon; to provide. a cap construction which may be readily and conveniently opened and closed by one hand operation to provide a construction which at all times firmly holds the cap both in open and closed position;
to provide a construction which adequately distances the cap froin the, outlet when in open position; toprovide a combination double seated andstruction; to provide a construction adapted to lift the cap and throw it ofi center dur ng the opening operation;
to provide an 1111-- .proved spring construction adaptable to function' as a hinge and a specific and positive anchor designed to make ma s of the spring hug the orifices into which they are fitted;
to supplement the force which normally tends to position and holdthe ends of combination anchor andhinge; to avoid the tendency of the anchor and hingeslipping fices into which it is the various other made apparent from tion in which similar Figure l is a vie 7 upper portion of from the 'or1- fitted; and to provide advantages and results the following specifica- Referring to the accompanying drawings which form a part of this specificat on and of reference refer to letters views,

The top ofthe neck Bis flat at B and there dimensioned to fit snugly against the gasket B" preferably made fronfcork and carried within the cap I. The cap is proi Vided with sectional elevated edges 1? I? for ready and convenientthuinb use in o 'iening and closing the tube. The knob I and ot l therein are provided as axbearing place for the center Gr of the spring G." The angnlarly arranged pivot pins F are provided at their terminals with an upwardly turned burr F designed to prevent the spring G from slipping out of the sockets E. In use the burrs F wear a groove at the bottom of thesockets E and the anchorage therein is constantly strengthened.
1 The closure is removed from the aperture of the tube by exerting a side pressure,qas with the thumb. against the sectionalelevated edge i whereupon the cap I UPS,

lVhile We have illustrated and described a preferred construction for carrying our invention into effect, this is capable of variation or modification without departing, from the spirit of the invention. We therefore do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction herein. set forth but desire to avail. ourselves of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention we claim as new and d sire to ,ecure by Letters Patent of the U12 l States of America:
1. In combination With a receptacle having a hollow body and an apertured neck ex teiidiug thercfro";, the outer edge of said neck being bevelled and at its top flat, shouldcrs on opposite sides of said neck, transversely disposrid sockets in said shoulders, a cap having recesses therein the inner edge of which is shaped to seat and seal upon said bevelled cdgre, and having a flat extreme inner surface teeth upon said shoulders adapted to cooperate with said cap, a casket on said flat inner surface adapted to nt against the top of said neck when said bevelled edge is sealed, and a wire loop extending from the neck over the cap, said loop having; singularly arranged pivot pins with a burr on the ends thereof adapted to fit into said transversely disposed sockets.
In combination with a receptacle having a hollow body, and an apertured neck extending therefrom, the outer edge of said neck being bevelled and top flat, shoulders on opposite sides of said neck, transversely dis- 'rosed sock, in said shoulders, a tooth extending from each shoulder designed to engage and mesh with prongs on each side of the cap next mentioned, a cap the inner edge of which is shaped to seat and seal upon said bevelled edge, and having a flat extreme inner surface, a gasket on said flat inner surface, adapted to fit against the top of said neck when said bevelled edge is sealed, said cap having; extending thei rom pair of prongs adaptable to mesh with said tooth, and
a Wire loop extending from. the neck over the cap, said loop having angularly arranged pivot pins with burr on the ends thereof adapted to fit into said transversely dis posed sockets.
3. In a device of the kind described, a container having a hollow body and anapertured shouldered neck, transversely disposed sockets'thcrein, a double seated cap adapted to fit upon said neck, said cap having spaced prongs extending therefrom, a wire loop having angularly arran pivot pins with a burr on the ends thereof, adapted to lit into said transversely disposed sockets and secure the cap to the neck, teeth projected from the shoulders on the container shaped to mesh and function with said pron gs to lift tl c cap and throw it off center as side pressure is applied during the opening operation.
at. In a device of the class described a container having hollow body and an apertured neck, shoulders upon said neck, a cap adapted to fit upon said neck, said cap having spaced prongs thereon, means for pivotally securing said cap to said shoulders and teeth projecting from said shoulders adapted to mesh and cooperate with said pron, ;s to lift said cap and throw it oil center asside pressure is applied during the opening oporation.
5. In a device of the class described a container having a hollow body and an apertured neck, shoulders upon said neck, a cap adapted to fit upon said neck, said cap having spaced prongs extending therefrom, a wire loop securing said cap to said neck and teeth projecting from said shoulders upon said container adapted to cooperate with said prongs to lift said cap from said aperture in said neck.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures.
JOHN J. CALLAHAN. VVILFR-ED D. MCDERRIIOTT.
