, BoTTIIE s'rorrna I 5 Application filed March 31, 1921. serial No. 457,356.
To all whom it may concern? o Be it known that I; JOHN SoHnDLE ,.a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvaniai have invented .certain -newand' useful-Improvements in Bottle Stoppers, of aspecification. V- 7 One object off'my, invention is to provide an improved stopper which-will morecom pletely seal-"the necks of bottles or other containers than stoppers 'made prior to my present invention. I
which the following is myimproved stopper of such construction that it"can be cheaply and quickly manu' factured andyso thatit can beeasily and quickly attached toor removed from a;
bottle. r a i 3 These objects, and other. advantageous ends which will be: described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanyingd i inwhich- 2 Figure 1 is .a top plan view'showing my improved stopper applied to a bottle. 1 i Figure 2fis a fragmentary section taken on the line 22 of Figure 1, o Figure 3' is a section taken" on the line of Figurei2,
Figure 4' is a. View ;of' the same general cha'racteras shown in Figure 3, illustrating the parts before they are moved into their clamping positions, and i o Figure 5 is'a developed'view showing a blank 'whichcan be stamped out-of sheet .metal andhafterward s bentto, form the clamping lever illustrated inyFigures 1 to t-inclusive.
the Ineckof a bottle. My improved stopper includes a soft rubber nipple Thaving a cylindrical sleeve 8 adapted to be'projected i into thethroat 90f the bottle neck 6. The
flange 10' will be compressed firmly against make Referring to the drawings, represents seal:
*5 A1member 14,- whicheis,preferablymade'in"" the-form of a Inetalli'c' 'link; is'adaptedjto be inserted through the slot/'13 in the disk- 12 seas-toextend partway into the sleeve 8; I
This link has an'upper yoked end 15- in the form'zofa loop and a-slovvefr hooked end 16.
One side 17 of the link is continuous {and joins .the yoked end 15 with thehooked" end 16'.) Theotherside-lB oftheylink is 'sep .arated to provide a'space' lgfbetw'eenrth'e up itur'nedfend' 2O of the hooked portion 16'. and V V vthe lower 'end of thei side. l8,r asx-'clea rly lugs21 projecting inwardly atsdiffe'rent lev- 1 els for a purpose hereinafter describedif I 'A tapered spreading plug 22, 'which is a preferably: made frusto-conical Y. and of a p 23 adapted-to -beihooked over the 'u'pturned I shown in Figures 3 andML The side lZfihas hard: substance such asHmetaLhasan eyelet end420 so asto'ihangin the hooked-portion lfi'of the link; This'plug 22l1asitsfupper-- most portion of 7 smaller diameter :thanrthe '80 larger portion atthegbottom of great-(indi I internal diameter offlthe. sleeve '8 andflits am'eter; than theinternal, diameter .of the Sleeve 8 sothzttfby pulling upward-on: the

I v. provide a lever 24 whichlis pref-e :made of sheet metal first stamped in'the bent-into the shape illustratedin- Figure s 1 to 4 inclusive. This lever haswa central .link '14: relatively to'the sleeve 8, the plug handle portion 25 and -two wingsi26. 'VThese' wings are jbent substantially. v parallel I to.
'95 each other and includecurvedcamiedges 27 which terminate infingerss- 28. irt' each side of a cutoutvportion or-recess .29.;.';Tl1is recess 29 is arranged in linew-ith the-handle 25. and the fingers 28 arefoldedtoWard each other so that their outer: edges 30 abut each other as shown'in Figures l and;2.
The wings 26',- when the d'evicegis in itsassembled position, are located adgacent iop-k posite faces of the link 14 so Z'thatthexfi'n gers 28 extend'througlrthevoked top 15 of j the link'with theside 17 of the, link extending through the. hole provided by the out out portion 29 of the lever24lil. V .The cam edges 27 are made' convex from i as concave as shown in Figure 2.
they can be made to engage the under surfaces ofthe lugs 21 f a greater spreading" action is desired or if the nipple 7 is made shorter -than :that-; illustrated; In; other W'ords, the: device is vmadeto accommodate condit ons 'offvarlo-us 'foliarac'tersa so that the stopper can be' niade to seal container throats of. different characters, '5
iVlie'n' the stopper is tdbe attaoliechfthe,
' parts :are arranged infthe "positionsshoivn in vln igure 4;, the sleeve being positioned Within the throat'of the bottle vith the flange 10; in abutinent'with' the toPsurfac'e llqthcreoiii- In this position the plug 22i's -below'the nippie 'and the camedges 27' .en-
gage the top surface of the disk; To "seal thethroat of the bottle the lever2f is moved so that the cam edges 27 will rocli' on the np per snrfaceioiii the "disk and th e fingers28 .Willpull'the link 'upWardlyi-nntil the-plug 22' partway enters the lowerend o'f the sleeve 8"and 'compresses said sleeve into firm sealing engagement with the inner surface of the throat 9; the fingers 28 moving upwardly sintil the" points-131 engage the dislrl2gafter which a'con'tinued downward I -niovement of :the handle. 25 awnicanse' 'the V V 5 .5 edge 32 to engagecthe dislras shown in Fig- 'u're 3 and the points 31 to move into position at the opposite Sid'eofavertical plane passing downwardly through" the fingers 28, I ln'other Words 'the points-.31:are moved.to -a' position off cente'nan'd it is impossible for any expanding action of-the' ruhherof the nipple to accidentally swing 'the' handle I upwardly afterit once reaches theposition shown inFigure-3; IThus-the parts oifthe ,nipple are held in firm'slidin'gengagement .wvith the inner surfacefof the throat ofthe bottle and also; againstthe top surface .11 of the bottle neck; 5 V i The" link, if desired, can be stanipediout of. metal and it is obvious that the parts can he readily assembled or disassembled. For
' :examplethe'plng'22",vwhen the nipple is out of the neck of the-bottle;- can be readily detached from the hooked portion 16 by slightly-expanding the lower end of the nipple and throwing the eyelet 23 over the upturned :end 20 of the hooked portion.
o'After the plughas been detached the link can bep ulled ont' of the nipple and disk, and after, this action the lever can be pulled down along the side 18 ofithe'link by first --throwingithe link over theIhookedv-end15 and When 'the fingers 28 reach the-space19 Y i it will readily become-detached from the 1 link. Itiis thus an easymatter to replace Letters Patent is any of the parts such for example if, it is desired to substitute a new rubber nipple fVVhile I have. described nay-invention as taking a particular form, it will be understood thatthe various parts of my inven- 7 tion' may be changed 1' Without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence I'do not limit myself to the precise construction set ,forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come Within the scope of the {appendedclaims.
Having thusfdescribed I V i H,".
