Description

Au g. 25, 1931 s. H. GUYATT 3 FILE, TEMPORARY BINDER, LOOSE LEAF BOOK, AND THE LIKE Filed Dec. 20. 1929 11 I F ugl 10 Fig.2 10\ 1 I 4. -5 1I i J43 Patented Aug. 25, 1931 GEORGE HERBERT GUYATT, OF WARWICK LANE, LONDON, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO FFHCE JOHN WALKER. & COMPANY, LIMITED, 01? LONDON, ENGLAND FILE, TEMPORARY BINDER, LOUSE LEAF BOOK AND THE LIKE Application filed December 20, 1929, Serial No. 415,390, and. in Great Britain June 4, 1929.
This invention relates to files, temporary binders, loose leaf books and the like, of the kind comprising two plates of suitable size and shape, in superimposed relation to each other when the device is in its closed position, the upper plate being slidable upon the lower in a longitudinal direction and to some extent in a transverse direction, both plates being provided with two or more prongs the ends of which are adapted to mate or contact when the device is in its closed position, the longitudinal and transverse movement of the upper plate relative to the lower plate being efiected by means of two or more pins or studs each engaging a suitably formed cam slot. The object of the present invention is to provide animproved device of this kind which shall be extremely light and strong,
and one having the minimum number of parts consistent with the maximum degree of efficiency under allconditions of usage.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction which shall be equally applicable to binders or loose-leaf books of all sizes and capacities.
The present invention consists in a file, temporary binder, loose-leaf book, or the like, of the kind first above referred to wherein the cam slots are formed in the upper slidable plate and the coating pins or studs are fixed by riveting or otherwise to the lower plate or plates.
The invention also consists in a device set out in the preceding paragraphs wherein the plates are provided with prongs formed integral therewith.
Further features of the invention will be apparent from the following description, wherein a preferred construction will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of my improved device in its closed position,
Fig. 2 is a view of the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 in the open position, and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings I provide two light ribbon-like plates of suitable size and shape, the upper plate 1 of which is slidable upon the lower plate 2 in a carrying a corresponding number of fixed pins or studs 6 functionally engaging the slots 5, the lower part of each pin passing through the lower plate 2, the binding strip 8, and the reinforcing strip 9, and being Secured thereto by a riveting operation, ashoulder 7 being provided on each of the pins 6 whereby this operation may be conveniently effected. 7
It will of course be understood that if necessary or desirable the binding strip 8 and the reinforcing plate 9 may be dispensed with, in which case the pins 6 would be riveted over the bottom plate 2.
The lower plate 2 is further provided with a guide or stop 10 which in itself forms part of the lower plate. The upper part of each pin 6 is provided with a dome-shaped head,
the lower surface of which is in spaced relation to the shoulder upon the pin whereby the upper blade 1 is adapted to slide freely upon the lower plate 2, the prongs being opened by reason of the longitudinal and transverse movement of the plate 1 over the plate 2, due to the upward movement of the plate 1 by means of the thumb-piece 11 on the plate 1.
By constructing my file or loose-leaf book in this way, I provide a device of extremely light yet strong construction and one which is particularly ef ective for the purpose to which it is to be applied, while the arrangev.
ment can be employed with equal eifect and and like advantage to a binder'or loose-leaf book of any size or capacity.
I wish it to be understood that my invention is not to be limitedto the precise details of construction hereinbefore described as various modifications may be made therein; for example, the method of forming the coacting prongs and also of operating the upper plate to give the desired relative longitudinal and transverse movement may be etl'ected by any suitable means, all such modifications as these coming within the scope of my invention.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the kind referred to, comprising a plate, a second plate slidable upon the first and in superposed relation to the lower plate, a plurality of cam slots provided in the upper slidable plate and engaging said pins; whereby the upper plate is slid able in a longitudinal, and, to some extent, in a transverse direction relative to the lower plate, a plurality of cooperating prongs provided onboth the upper and lower plate, and a guide formed integral with the lower plate.
2. A device of the kind referred to, comprising a plate, a second plate slidable upon the first and in superposed relation thereto, a plurality of pins fixed to the lower plate, a plurality of cam slots provided in the upper slidable plate and engaging said pins whereby the upper plate is slidable in a longitudinal, and, to some extent, in a transverse direction relative to the lowerplate, a plurality of prongs formed integral with the upper plate and a plurality of cooperating prongs formed integral with the lower plate, and a guide formed integral with the lower plate.
3. A device of'the kind referred to, comprising a plate, a second plate slidable upon the first and in superposed relation thereto, a plurality of pins fixed to the lower plate, a plurality of cam slots provided in the upper slidable plate and engaging said pins whereby the upper plate is slidable in a longitudinal, and, to some extent, in a transverse direction relative to the lower plate, a plurailty of prongs formed integral with the upper plate and a plurality of cooperating prongs formed integral with the lower plate, and a guide formedintegral with the lower plate, and manually operated means for effecting the relative movement between the two plates.
In testimony whereof I afiir: my: signature.
GEORGE HERBERT GUYATT.
