The means for rotating the stem 16 back into initial condition upon opening of the sashes l1 and 14 consists of a pair of flat springs 41, tensioned against the enlarged square portions 16 of the stem 16 within the space 20. The means operated upon full rotation of said stem 16 to trip the catch 31 and. move out of tripped position to allow resetting of the catch and upon slight rotation'to trip said catch and remain in the trip ed condition consists of a trip bell cran 42 pivotally mounted intermediate its ends at 43 upon the raised portion 19 of the bracket 10 and'so positioned that its front end 44 is in line with the aperture in the raised portion 19 which receives the stem 34 when the latch is in its operative position. The rear end of the bell crank 42 is pivotally connected with a link 45 which is pivotally connected at its other end 46 upon a radial finger '47 attached upon the stem 16.
When the catch. 15 is .in its operative position, the finger'47 is-to one side of a line drawn between the trip 42 and the center of the stem 16. This condition of the device is shown in full lines in Fig. 4. When the stem 16 is caused to rotate upon the closing of the sashes 11 and 14 the finger 47 moves to aposition indicated by dot and dash'lines 48 so as to-be on the line between the center of the stem. 16 and the trip 42. Such motion causes the .link 45 to be moved so as to move the trip 42 toforce the stem 34 upwards and free the catch so that the spring 28 is free to rotate the cup 12 into its latching position- Further rotation of the stem 16 causes the finger 47 to move to a position indicated by the. dot and dash lines 49 in Fig. 4 which is now to the other side of the line drawn between the. trip 42 and the stem 16. The motion of the finger to this latter position is transmitted by the link 45 to move the trip. 42 back into its initial condition so that the catch 15 may again assume its operative position.
For following the operationof the device it is best to first assume the cup. 1.2 to be latched in its inoperative position. Upon closing of the window sashes the finger 39 acts against the inclined surface of the trip 36 so as to cause rotation of the stem 16. As the stem 16turns the finger 47.,moves so as to first cause the trip finger 42 to press the stem 34. upwards for releasing the catch 15 so that the spring 28 turns the cup 12 into its latched condition. The latched condition is the one in which the flange 22 engages beneath the beak 25. As the sashes 11 and 14 assume the completely closed condition, the stem 16 rotates slightly further so that the finger 47 assumes the position indicated by dot and dash lines 49 and the trip finger'42 is moved out from the aperture in the raised portion 19. p
The window sashes are now locked and if the party desires to unlatch' the sashes he may do so by merely manually movingthe cup 12 back into its initial condition so that the plunger 34 en ages within the aperture in the raised portion 19. Now the window sashes are closed, but in unlatched position. In the event that the par using the device wishes to make it impossi 1e for the cup 12v to maintain an unlatched osition while the sashes 11 and 14 are close it is merely necessary to loosen the set screw 38' and adjust the position of the cam 36 so that when. the finger 39 acts against the cam the stem 16 is merely rotated from a position as indicatedby the full lines in Fig. 4 to the position. as indicated by the dot and dash lines 48 in Fig. 4. It will be noticed that the tri finger 42 then maintains its position wit in the aperture in the raised portion 19 so that the catch 15 cannot assume an operativeposition.
In Fig. 5 another form of the invention has been disclosed which differs from the form just described in that in the normal position of the stem 16, the finger 47 is as shown in Fig. 5, that is, it is in such a position that the link 45 is on a line extending from the trip 42 through the axis of the stem 16. The trip 42 is out of engagement and positioned directly beneath the stem 34 of the plunger 31. Another change is that the trip 42 is positioned directly reversed to the trip before described, that is, the rear end of the trip which connect-s with the link 45 is towards the link, as may be seen from an inspection of Fig. 5. An inspection of Figs. 1 and 4 clearly points out that the rear end of the trip 42 is remote from the finger 47 relative to the front end of the trip.
These slight changes change the mode of operation somewhat. Whenthe window sash is closed, the stem 16- is rotated so that the finger 47 moves to the position indicated by cup open.
