OPERATING VALVES OF STEAM-ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,197, dated September 15, 1897.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT H. FLETCHER, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Operating the Slide-Valves of Steam-Engines; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents the several part-s by section in one position. Fig. 2 represents the same parts as they stand when the piston has traveled to the opposite end of the cylinder.
A represents an ordinary steam cylinder, and B, the piston head working therein.
C is the piston rod packed at D in any well known manner.
F is a steam chest connected to the cylinder A, and which communicates with said cylinder by means of the steam ways a and E is a slide valve to which a reciprocating motion is imparted by any of the well known devices, and which as it is operated upon, opens and closes alternately one of the steam channels c and Z which connect the steam chest F, with the interior of the cylinder G. The cylinder G is open at both its ends, but is formed with a partition H, in its center, which incloses the channel g, which serves for the passage of the exhaust steam. The cylinder G is provided with two pistons P and K, which are rigidly connected by a rod m, in dotted lines, or any other devices; the rods of these pistons K and P, are shaped in such a manner as to form suit able slide valves M, and Z, for the admission and escape of the steam to and from the main cylinder A.
The operation of this mechanism is as follows: In Fig. 1 the steam passes from the steam chest F through the channel d into the space o. The steam in the steam chest F passes equally on the two outer sides of the pistons K and P, and for this reason does not produce any movement, but as soon as the steam is admit-ted through channel cl the piston K is forced to the right and pist-on P is forced in the same direction; by this movement the channel a, is opened and the steam passes from the steam chest F, through channel a and acts upon the piston B; the steam behind the piston escapes through channel ZJ into space of valve M, whence it passes through channels 70 and g to the condenser or to the air. When the piston B has arrived at the end of its course as represented in Fig. 2, then the steam valve E is suddenly moved by an eccentric or otherwise to the position represented in Fig. 2, by which the channel c is opened for the admittance of steam from the steam chest F, while the channel d, is closed and is set in communication with the condenser or with the atmospheric air. The steam now passes into the chamber r forcing pistons P and K into the position of Fig. 2 and the steam now enters the main cylinder by the channel ZJ, and escapes through the channel a space y, channels g and g into the escape pipe s to the condenser or atmospheric air.
Having thus fully described the nature of my invention, what I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the slide valve E, with the pistons P and K, and valves Z and M, with their respective steam ways operating together in the manner and for the purposes described.
