I 5 'YYVE 0M1 Z2 ATTORNEY N-PETERS, FHOYO-L|THOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON, D C) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON B. HUNT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PNEUMATIC APPARATUS FOR ECONOMIZING COMPRESSED AIR.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 223,649, dated'J'anuaryBO, 1880.
' Application filed July 25, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, SIMON BENTON HUNT, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pneulnatic Economizers in the Compression of and Expansion of Atmospheric Air for Ice-Making or Refrigerating Purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled ill the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to that kind of mechanical construction employed ill the manufacture of ice and for refrigerating purposes, so that the elastic fluid passes into the expandin gengine from the compressor, so that a great amount of elastic force is produced upon the piston-head in saidengine to assist the working steam-engine to operate the several parts of the apparatus.
My improvement consists in so manipulating the compressed atmospheric air while in the expandingcylinder that the greatest force is exerted upon the piston-head in said cylinder at any desired point of the steam-piston rod in the cy1inder-for instance, While it is forcing the pistons of the compressors to their most extreme point of pressure.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of nyimproved apparatus. Fig. 2 is avertical section of the air-chest and valve-chamber D, forming a part of the expanding-engine. The steam-valves are shown at 1 2 3 4 operated by means of pedals 5 6 7 8 and shaft S, provided with pins a b 0 d. Said shaft S is operated by the bevel-gearing 0. (Shown at Fig. 1.) Fig.
3 is a side elevation of compressors B B, showing the connecting-pipes n n, to produce a vacuum to extract the warm air from the refrigerating-chamber or other use. Fig. 4 rep resents a working section, B, Fig. 3.
The piston in the expanding-cylinder C may be adjusted to operate at any desirable point of the stroke of the steam-piston also the pistons of the compressors B B.
Referring to the valves, 1 and 3 operate together and 2 and 4 operate ina similar manner by means of the pedals 5 6 7 8, provided with pins a b o d, the whole being adjusted by the lever V, Fig. l, acting upon the gate N to elevate or lower the valves 2 and 3, which control the air under pressure. 7
What I claim as novel and useful, and wish to protect by Letters Patent of the United States, is-- The steam-piston rod W, geared to the outer face of the fly-wheel Y, and the piston-rod in compressing-cylinder C to the outer face of the fly-wheel Y, in such a manner that the said tions' to the steam-piston in cylinder A, by which means the compressed air in the cylinder 0 assists in operating the driving crankshaft F, which operates the compressors B B,
' in combination with the valves 1 2 3 4, pedals 5 6 7 8, shaft-pins a b c d, and. lever V, all constructed, arranged, and operatingin the man; ner and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own invention I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIMON BENTON HUNT.
