Be it known that 1, CHARLES L. NEwcoMB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holyoke, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pumping-Engines, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings forming a part of the same, in which Figure 1 is a top view of apumping-engine embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is a side view with a portion shown in section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3is an end view of the pump piston-rod. Fig. disavertical sectional view of the cross-head connecting with the steampiston, the section being shown on line 4, Fig. 2; and Fig. 5 is an end View of the cross-head connected with the driving-shaft, the pump piston-rod being shown in sectional view on line 5, Fig.

The pumping-engine which forms the subject of my present invention comprises a pump-cylinder and a steam-cylinder with their inclosed pistons and a shaft driven independently of the steam-cylinder; and the object of my present invention is to provide means by which the piston of the pump-cylinder can be operatively connected with either the driving-shaft or the piston of the steamcylinder, so the pump-piston can be actuated directly from the steam-cylinder or from the rotating driving-shaft, as may be desired; and my invention consists in the construction and arrangement ofparts,asherein after described, and pointed out in the annexed claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have represented my invention as embodied in a dupleX pumping-engine comprising two pumpcylinders and two steam-cylinders andacommon driving-shaft. The actuating mechanism by which the pump-pistons are moved is, however, the same upon both sides of the pumping-engine, and a description of one side will therefore serve as a description of the opposite side. The pump-cylinders and their inclosed pistons are of the ordinary and wellknown form of construction, and therefore Serial No. 579,449. (No model.)

A denotes the framework of the pumping engine, and A A the pump-cylinders.
B B denote the steam-cylinders,one of which is shown in central sectional view in Fig. 2. The steam-cylinders are each provided with a steam-chest B and slide-valve B havinga valve-stem B by which the steam-passages to the cylinder B are controlled in the usual manner. Each of the steam-cylinders B con tains a reciprocating piston B attached to a hollow piston-rod B which extends in opposite directions from the piston B and passes through the stuffing boxes B B at opposite ends of the steam-cylinder. One end of the hollow piston-rod B is attached to a reciprocating head C, carried upon the end of the hollow piston-rod. The head C is provided with a lug C, connected by a link C with an arm C which is attached to a rock-shaft C journaled in the framework of the machine and provided at its opposite end with a radial arm operatively connected with the reciprocating valve-stem upon the opposite side of the pump. Similarly the corresponding heads carried upon the opposite hollow piston-rod of the pump is connected in like manner with a rock-shaft C journaled in the framework of the machine and provided with a radial arm C, connected by a link C with the valve-stem B so the reciprocating motion of the heads C will actuate the steam-valves upon the opposite side of the pump.
J ournaled in the framework of the pump is a shaft D, carrying a belt-pulley D, by which the shaft D-is driven, and also a pinion D in mesh with a gear D on a shaft D provided at its ends with crank-plates D D, carrying crank-pins D, Fig. 2, which are connected by links D with reciprocating cross -heads D sliding in ways formed in the framework of the pump.
The pump-pistons, which are inclosed in the cylinders A A and not shown in the drawings, are carried upon piston-rods E E, which pass through the hollow steam piston-rods B Fig. 2, and are enlarged near their ends and provided with a hexagonal section E, to which a wrench is applied in order to turn the piston-rod, as hereinafter mentioned.
The end of the piston-rod E is provided with lugs E ll upon diametrically opposite sides of the piston-rods, as represented in Fig. 3, and a short distance from the end of the piston-rod and upon the opposite side of the hexagonal section E are similar lugs E E projecting from the piston-rod and in a plane at right angles with that of E The head C is provided with a circular chamber F, concentric with the piston-rod E, and having upon one side an elongated opening F, Fig. 4, having parallel sides F F forming lips F- F.
In Figs. 2 and at of the drawings the pistonrod E is shown as operatively connected with the reciprocating head 0, and the connection of the head C and piston E is effected by moving the head 0 along the rod E until the lugs E E are inclosed in the circular chamber F and turning the piston-rod E to bring the lugs E in a plane at right angles with that of the elongated opening F, so the ends of the lugs IE will be held by the lips F causing the reciprocating motion of the head 0, as it is moved by the steam piston-cylinder B to be imparted to the piston-rod E andits connected piston inclosed in the pump cylinder A. When the piston rod E is turned in position to connect it with the head 0, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, lugs E at the end of the pistonrod Ecol-respond with an elongated opening G in the cross-head D which communicates with a circular chamber G in the cross-head D and concentric with the piston-rod E, and in this position the cross-head D and pistonrod E are each capable of independent movement, as the cross-head D is capable of moving back and forth over the end of the pistonrod E and the lugs E E The piston-rod E is disconnected from the head 0 and connected with the cross-head D as follows: The cross-head D is moved over the end of the piston-rod until the lugs E are brought within the circular chamber G. A
. wrench is applied to the hexagonal section E and the piston-rod E turned one-quarter of a revolution, bringing the lugs E into a plane at right angles with the elongated opening G, so they will be locked in the chamber G, and at the same time bringing the lugs E into the plane of the elongated opening F, so the head 0 can be moved independently of the rod E, the piston-rod E being then driven by the cross-head D The valve mechanism by which the passage of steam to the steam-cylinders B is controlled is connected to the heads 0, and is therefore directly connected with the steam-pistons B so that whenever steam is shut ofi from the steam-cylinders the heads 0 and connected valve mechanisms are thrown out of action, allowing the piston-rods E and connected pump-pistons to be actuated by power received through the belt-pulley D, thereby allowing the pump to be driven directly from a counter-shaft or other shaftin g of a mill, and whenever the shafting of the mill is stopped the pump may be driven by steam applied through the steam-cylinders B. The heads 0 and cross-heads D are provided with holes to receive a pin H, which in the drawings is represented as inserted in the head 0 and in contact with the side of the lugs E E thereby holding the piston-rod E against rotation and preventing it from becoming unlocked from the head 0. \Vhen the piston-rod E is connected with the cross-head D", the pin H is transferred from the head 0 to the cross-head D and inserted in a similar hole (indicated by broken lines 11 in Fig. 5) and held in contact with the sides of the lugs E The piston-rods E are conical upon each side of the hexagonal section E for a short distance, as at I I, and the head 0 and crosshead D are provided with tapering openings J J, corresponding with the conical sections I I, which are drawn into the openings J J whenever the lugs E or E are locked in their respective chambers F and G.
WVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a pumping-engine, the combination with a pump-cylinder and a piston contained therein, of a steam-cylinder, a reciprocating piston in said steam-cylinder, a hollow piston-rod attached to said steam-piston, a piston-rod attached to said pump-piston and inclosed within said hollow piston-rod, and
means for connecting said piston-rods,whereby the reciprocating motion of said steampiston will be imparted to said pump-piston,
substantially as described.
2. In a pumping-engine, the combination of a steam-cylinder and a pump-cylinder in alinement therewith, reciprocating pistons contained in said steam and pump cylinders,
a hollow piston-rod attached to said steam- IIO piston, a head attached to one end of said hollow piston-rod and containing a circular chamber concentric with the hole through said hollow piston-rod and an elongated opening communicating with said circular chamber,
a piston-rod attached to said pump-piston izo in alinement with said pump-cylinder and provided with concentric stuffing-boxes at opposite ends, a reciprocating piston contained in said steam-cylinder, a hollow piston-rod attached to said steam-piston and extending through said stuffing-boxes at each end of said steam-cylinder, a piston-rod attached to said pump-piston and inclosed in said hollow piston-rod, and means by which said pump piston-rod is disconnected with said hollow piston-rod, substantially as described.
4. In a pumping-engine, the combination of a pump-cylinder and a steam-cylinder in alinement therewith, pistons contained in said cylinders a hollow piston-rod attached to said steam-piston, and extending in opposite directions with a bearing in each end of said steam-cylinder, a head attached to said hollow piston-rod, a piston-rod attached to said pump-piston and passing through said hollow piston-rod and means by which said pump piston-rod is united to said head, substantially as described.
5. In a pumping-engine, the combination of a steam-cylinder and pump-cylinder in alinement therewith,pistons contained in said cylinders, ahollow piston-rod attached to said steam cylinder and extending from said steam-cylinder through opposite ends of said steam-cylinder, a head attached to said hollow piston-rod, valve mechanism by which the flow of steam to said steam-cylinder is controlled, connecting mechanism by which said valve mechanism is operatively connected with said head, a piston-rod attached to said pump-piston and inclosed in said hollow piston-rod, and means by which said pump piston-rod is connected with said head, whereby the reciprocating motion of said steamcylinder is imparted to said pump-cylinder, substantially as described.
6.In a pumping-engine, the combination with a pump-cylinder, and a piston contained therein, a steam-cylinder and a piston contained therein, of ahollowpiston-rod attached to said steam-piston, apiston-rod attached to said pump-piston and passing concentrically through said hollow piston-rod, means for connecting said pump piston-rod with said steam piston-rods, a rotating driving-shaft, a reciprocating cross-head operatively connected with said driving-shaft, and means for connecting said pump piston-rod with said recip rocating cross-head, whereby said pump-piston is driven by either said steam-piston or said driving-shaft, substantially as described.
7. In a pumping-engine, the combination with a steam-cylinder and reciprocating piston contained therein, of a piston-rod attached to said steam-piston, a head carried by said steam piston-rod'and provided with a circular concentric chamber and an elongated opening communicating therewith, a rotating driving-shaft, a reciprocating cross-head operatively connected with said shaft and pro- Vided with a circular chamber and an elongated opening communicating with said circular chamber, said circular chambers being in alinement, a pump-cylinder, a reciprocating piston in said pump-cylinder, a pistonrod attached to said pump-cylinder and en tering the head on said steam piston-rod and also said reciprocating cross-head, a pair of lugs projecting upon opposite sides of said pump piston-rod, and adapted to engage the head on said steam piston-rod, a second pair of lugs on said pump piston-rod arranged in a plane at right angles with said first pair of lugs and adapted to engage said reciprocating cross-head, whereby said pump pistonrod is connected with, or disconnected from said steam piston-rod, head or said reciprocatin g cross-head by a partial rotation of said pump piston-rod, substantially as described.
