STEAM PUMPING-ENGINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Applicatinn-fi1ed November 28, 1884.
To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN O. BORN, of Belleville, in the county of St. Olair and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Steam Pumping-Engines, of which the following` is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, and in which- A Figure l is an elevation, and Fig. 2 a top plication to a pump. Fig. 3 is an end view of same. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section, taken on line 4 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail section, taken on line 5 5, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the pump-barrel. Fig. 7 is an elevation of the discharge-valve. Fig. 9 is a similar View of the receiving-valve, and Fig. 8 is an elevation of the valve-cage.
My invention relates to a steam or other engine particularly adapted to boiler-feeders; and my invention consists in features of novelty hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the cylinder; B, the cylinder-heads; C, the steamchest formed in the front cylinder-head; D, the piston in the cylinder A; I, the piston-rod; J, the valve in the chest C; J', the valve-stem; L, a bracket secured to the cylinder to guide the valvestem; M, a shaft journaled in lugs M', formed upon the head of the cylinder in which the steam-chest is located; N, a flywheel on the shaft M; O, a cani on the shaft having an eccentric groove to receive a projection, J2, on the valve-stem, which may be surrounded by a friction-roller, J3; P, a disk on the shaft; P, an eccentric wrist-pin on the disk; P2, a rod connecting the Wrist-pin with a cross-head, I', on the piston-rod, by which the shaft M is turned to operate,through means steam-chest; A2, the supply-ports, and A3 the exhaust-port.
The steam-chest and valve are preferably circular, as shown in Fig. 4, and the valve has a recess, J", to permit the exhaust-steam to enter the port A3. The back of the valvestem has a projection, J 5, that ts in a groove, L', of the bracket L. The pistou-rod acts as the plunger of the pump, entering a barrel, U,

provided with a stuffing-box, U', and a disk or iiange, U2, connected by arms U3 to the rear head of the cylinder.
V represents the pump-cylinder, secured to the barrel U by a bolt, V, and the interior of which communicates with the interior of the barrel by openings `or perforations V2. (See Figs. 4 and 6.)
NVithiu the cylinder is a cage, XV, having perforations W for the passage of the water, and in which is seated a receiving-valve, W2, and discharge-valve V The cage is prefer-- ably formed ou the inner end of a plug, W4, that screws into the cylinder.
X represents the water-supply and X the water-discharge opening, with which suitable pipes are connected.
The inner end of the cage has a collar, W5, fitting againsta flange, NV, on the interior of the cylinder.
A bracket, Y, may be formed upon one of the arms U3 to secure the device to a support.
The cylinder V may be turned to any position to receive the Water-sup pl y pipe,as shown by full and dotted lines, Fig. 1, the joint between it and the barrel U permitting of this adjustment, as will be clearly understood by referring to Fig. 4.
A* represents the pipe for the supply of motive power, which may be steam or air.
I have not claimed in this application any of the novel features which the pump herein described may possess, but reserve the right to make said pump the subject of a separate application for Letters Patent.
I am aware that steam-valves have been operated from the main shaft of the engine through the medium of an eccentric wrist-pin carried by said shaft, and a pitman connecting it with the stem of the valve; but such is .not the equivalent of my invention.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the cylinder A, having the reciprocating piston D, of the steam-chest C, located at the end of said cylinder and transversely thereto, a slide-valve, J, located in said chest and having a stem projecting therefrom, a rotary shaft, M, journaled externally to the cylinder and chest and parallel with the movement of the valve, a cam, O, carried by said shaft, and a lateral IOO projection from the valve-stem with which l rotary shaft M, journaled externally to said IO said cam engages to move the valve, as set forth.

5 the reciprocating piston D, and the pistoirrod cylinder and chest and parallel tothe latter, the cam O, carried thereby, the Wrist-pin P, and connectinglink P2, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as set forth.
