The invention relates to the continuous rolling of strips or sheet strips', and is an improvement upon and continuation of the common subject matter of my copending appliction Serial No. 213,317, filed August 16,
The object of the improvementl is to'provide a continuous rolling apparatus in which slabs from a blooming mill dr slab mill may be continuously r'olled into cold rolled orhot rolled and annealedfstrips, means being provided for cooling the hot stripdown to pickling temperature and continuously pickling the same as it passes fromthe hot rolls; for
Washing and drying the pickled sheets and again cooling the sheets as they pass from the drier before entering the cold rolls, continuously annealing means being provided beyond the cold rolls, an additional stand or stands of cold rolls being located beyond the annealing furnace for giving the strips the desired hardness after annealing, meansbeing provided beyond the last named cold rolls for either shearing the strips into sheet lengths or coiling the same; means' being also provided for passing the strips around the pickling and cold rolling mechanism, from the hot rolls to the annealing furnace, for the production of hot rolled annealed strips.
An embodiment of the invention thus set forth in general terms is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figures 1, 1a and 1b are a `complete plan sectional view of the improved apparatus;
and f Figs. 2, 2aV and 2b are a complete vertical sectional view through the apparatus, showing the mechanism for rolling cold rolled strips from the slabs.
throughout the drawings.
The blooming mill or slab mill is shown generally at 1, being provided with a roller conveyer 2 for carrying the slabs or the like to and from the mill. The slabs may be sheared to the desired size by a shear indicated generally at 3 located beyond the slab mill, and in position to receive slabs from the conveyer 2.
If desired, the slabs, after being sheared,
ldown to pickling temperature.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts" may beturned as by the slab turning table shown at 4, which may be rotated by any suitable and well known means, in order to turn the slab for cross rolling before the same is passed to the conveyer 5 extending through and beyond the heating furnace 6.
A plurality of stands of hot mills, illustrated generally at 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, is located in succession beyond the heating furnace, each stand being positioned further from the preceding stand than the next preceding stand of rolls in Order to compensate for the continuous elongation of the hot strip as it passes through the several stands of hot mills.
A series of conveyers 12 may be located between adjacent stands of hot mills for carrying the strip from one mill to the next, and, if desired, edge rolls 13 may be located between adjacent hot mills for the purpose of rolling the edges ofthe hot strip as it passes through the mills.
A conveyer 14 is located beyond the last stand of hot rolls for carrying the hot strip to a cooler 15, provided for cooling the strip Inlet and outlet pipes 16 and 17 respectively, may be provided in the cooler for continuously circulating cold air or inert gas through the cooler and over the hot strips, in order to quickly cool the same to the desired temperature.
A shear 18 may be provided between the transfer table 14 and the cooler 15, as shown, or, if desired, at any point between the hot mills and the cold rolls to be hereinafter described, for the purpose of shearing the ragged front edge ofthe strip before the same enters the cold rolls. L*
A pair of feed rolls 19 may be located beyond the cooler for passing the cooled strip through the pickling tank 20, which may be formed of acid resisting steel or the like.
Guides 21 may be provided in the tank for passing the strip down through the pickling solution, and a substantially air-'tight cover 22 may be provided upon the pickling tank, a suction pipe 23 leading therefrom to a fan or the like, for the purpose of carrying away the fumes from the pickling bath and discharging them at any point outside of the building or room in which located. Pinch rolls 24 may be located beyond the pickling tank for passing the pickled strip on to the conveyer 25, which passes the strip to f# the Washing tank 26, drying furnace 27 and cooler 28, This cooler'may be of the same construction as the cooler 15 above described.
An edge trimmer 29 may be located betWeent-he cooler 28 and the plurality of stands of cold rolls 30, and, if desired, jets 31 may be located to impinge air, steam or'other' fluids diagonally across the surface of the strip before it enters the cold rolls, for the purpose of removing scale and dirt from the surface of the strip.
A `The conveyer 25 may be arranged to carry the strip through the several stands of cold rolls. and then through a continuous nonoxidizing annealing furnace 32, in Which the strip may be annealed and cooled down below vscaling temperature as it passes through the furnace.
Beyond the annealing. furnace steam jets 33 may be provided forfurther cleaning of the annealed strip. If desired, a roller leveler 34 may be provided for leveling or straightening the annealedstrips which may first be passed`through one or more stands 35 of cold rolls to a shear 36 or coiler 37, in which the strips may be either sheared to sheet lengths or coiled, as desired.
Where itis desired to produce hot rolled annealed strips, the strips coming from `the hot rolls may be transferred from the conveyer 14, by means of a transfer table 88 to a conveyer 39 and by-passed around the A cooler 15, pickling tank, Washing tank, dry,-
` ing furnace, cooler 28 and cold rolls 30, and 40 then by means of a transfer table 40, may be passed back on to the conveyer 25 and then may be passedl through the annealing furnace 4rollerleveler to the cold rolls 35 and so forth,
as above described.
A shear 41 may be provided upon the conveyer 39 for trimming the front edge of the hot strip or for cutting the strips into desired lengths.
If it is desired to coil the hot rolled strips, a coiler 42 may be provided at one end of the conveyer 39, asJ shown in Fig. 1a, and the strips afterbei'ng passed fromI the transfer table to the conveyer 39, may be moved back- Ward to the coiler. D
From the above, it will be obvious that slabs from the blooming mill or slab -mill may be continuously passed through the apparatus to produce either cold rolled or hot rolled annealed strips, as desired. do I claimc- '1.
