BLECKER, Vor CANTON, orIIo, AssIeNoR or EIETY-oNE PEE GENT To EDWARD A.. LANGENBACH, 0E CANTON, oIIIo coNTINUoUs STRIP `AND SHEET MILL Application led. August 16, 1927. Serial. No. 213,317.
- trated inthe accompanying drawings, in
which Figures 1,1 and 1b are a complete plan generally at 1, a roller conveyor shown at 2- being provided for carryihg slabs or the like to and from the mill. f
The sl'abs maybe sheared to the'deslred size as by the shears 3 located beyond the conveyor 2. AAs each slab is,` sheared it passes to a slab turning table 4, which may be rotated by any suitable and well vknown means to turn the slab to the desired position before passing on to the conveyor 5 which carries the slabs. through the continuous heating furnace 6. v v
Beyond the continuous heating furnace is located a series 'of stands of strip rolling mills shown at 7, 8, 9,'10 and 11. each stand being,
spaced further from the preceding stand than the next preceding standof rolls in order-to compensate for the continuous elongation of the strip as it passes through the successive stands of rolls. y
Conveyors 12 are located between the several stands of strip rolling mills for the purpose of continuously carrying the strip y through the several stands. A conveyor 13 is located beyond the last stand of strip rolling v mills 11 and is associated with a transfer table 14, which may carry the strips to one side of the conveyor and a similar transfer table 15 arranged to carry the strips to the other side thereof.
Side rolls 7, 8a, 9aand 1()a are located cen trally between the stands of mills 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11, for the purpose of rolling the edges of the strip passing through said mills.
Beyond the transfer table the conveyor 13V asses through the cooler 16 provided with Inlet and outlet pipes 17 and L18-respectively, through which cold air or the like may be passed to the strips for the purpose of cooling the strips to a pickling temperature.
A pair of feed rolls 19 may be located directlybeyond the cooler for passing the strips through a continuous pickling tank 20, preferably' formed of acid resisting steel. The
strips are adapted to be passed down through the pickling solution by means of the guides 21 located 1n the fpickling tank.
The cover 22 o the pickling tank may be connectedas by the pipe 23 with a suction fan 24 adapted to carry the fumes from the pickling bath and discharge them at any point outside of the room as through the discharge pipe 25. y
Pinch rolls 26 may be located beyond the pickling tank for the purpose of discharging the pickled strips therefrom and passing them through the washing tank 26a after which they pass on to the conveyor 27, which extends through a drying furnace 28 and on beyond to an edge trimmer 29, and thence to a series of stands of cold rolling mills 30.
A shear 15al may be located somewhere in the apparatus between the hot mills and the cold rolling mills to shear the front end of the `hot strip before the same enters the cold rolling mills.
Beyond the cold rolling mills the conveyor is arranged to carry the strips through a nonoxidizing annealing furnace 31 and then if desired the strips may be passed through a roller leveler as shown at 32 and disposed of in any desirable manner.
By passing the strips straight through the apparatus above described cold rolled annealed strips are produced in a single continuous operation from the slabs.
If'it is desired to roll hot rolled annealed strips, the process is as above describeduntil the strips reach the conveyor 13, at which time the transfer table 14 is operated to move the strips laterally on to the conveyor 33 Where they are passed around the coolerv 16, pickling tank 2O, washing tank 26a, drying furnace 28, and cold rolling mills 30. As the strips reach the transfer table 34 they may be moved back 'to the `conveyor 27 and then passed through the annealing furnace y31 and roller leveler 32. v
It should be understood that instead of transferring the strips back by means of the transfer ytable 34 they may -be passed straight ahead through a duplicate of the annealmg furnace 31, and then through a roller leveler if desired.
If it is desired to roll sheets the process is the same as above described until the strips reach the conveyor 13, at which time they are transferred to the left by the'transfer table 15 and deposited upon'a conveyor 35 Where they are shearedas by the Shears36 to the proper length for rolling sheets and then piled in piles of two or more sheets upon the matching -table 37, the piles beingthen carried by the conveyor 38 through'the continuous sheet furnace 39 and then throu h the successive stands of sheet rolling mi ls 40, 41, 42, 43 and 44.
These stands of sheet rolling mills are successively spaced at increasing distances from each other to compensate for the elongation of the piles of sheets passing therethrough. For the purpose' of removing scale from the sheet packs as they pass through these fmills, angularly disposed steam `ets 45 may be directed across the surfaces of thev packs.
The packs of sheets may then be passed through the edge trimming shears 46 and then sheared to length by the end-trimming shears 47 and carried away. from the shears as by the conveyor 48.
Fromthe above it will be obvious that the slabs fromthe blooming mill may be continuously passed through the apparatus to pro duce either cold rolled or hot rolled and annealed strips or sheets, as desired.
The strips may be rolled to the desired gauge by using either the hot rolling-process as required, or the sheets 'may be rolled to the desired gauge by piling the necessary sheets in a pack before passing through the continuous sheet mills.
