Description

H.H.OSGOOD.
WEATHER-STRIP. N0.181,968. Patented Sept. 5,1876.
'WITEEEEE lfm/ENTER N.PETERS. FHOTO-LITHOGRAPHEH. WASHINGTON. 9,1;
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HAMLIN E. oseooD, oE EosToN, MAssAoHUsETTs, AsstGNoE To EEAsTUs c. UNDEEWooD, or SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEM ENT IN WEATHER-STRIPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,968, dated September 5, 1876; application iiled August 7, 1,876.
-To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, HAMLIN H. Oscoop, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Flexible Weather-Strip, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to the kind of Weather-strip known as the cushion-strip, and consists in a strip of elastic material, longitudinally folded, having its edges united to a flexible base, and arranged to bulge out therefrom where necessary. The completed strip is attached to the surface adjacent to the joint to be covered, and projects its cushion upon or over the joint, serving asa packing in closing the same.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawling, forming a part of this specification, in explainingthe same, in Which- Figure l represents my invention employed for a packing upon double doors,which swing past each other, in which the strip A is fastened to the. flexible base B in such a Way as to project its center, substantially as shown.
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the'same.
Figs. 3 and 4 show strip A doubled, its edges brought together, and attached to each other and the base B.
Figs. 5 and 6 show a construction by which 'a broader cushion end is obtained, by insert- The base B acts as a re-enforce, and may be of soft rubber, like that used in the cushion, or it may be of felt, paper, canvas, or any other flexible material. If soft lrubber" is employed for the base, it may be desirable to use cement in .uniting the cushion to it. If felt, canvas, or paper are employed as a reenforce or base, it may be necessary to sew or rivet the edges of the doubled strip yto the same, and this method can bel used as well where the entire strip is of soft-rubber stock.
The advantages of the invention are, the ease with which the strip can be fitted to uneven or rounded surfaces, and the superior packing properties obtained by using the cush-A ion-strip in combination With a base which is itself of a oompressible or packing nature. j
The re-enforce or base B may be colored or stained to correspond in color to the surface upon which it is fastened, when desirable. Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The Weather-strip described, the same consisting of the elastic strip A, folded longitudinally, as shown, and having its edges united to a exible base, B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
