rAlthoughzcertain forms of the invention are herein shown in connection with'small closures and other forms of the invention are.
shown in connection with larger closures, it will be understood that the sizes of the embodiments of the invention may be varied as desired without departing from the spirit of the invention, as for example, the closures shown in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive and in Figures 5lto 8 inclusive may be madeof a size corresponding to that of the closures shown 1n Figures 4 and 9, and that the forms of the inventionjshown in these'latter Figures may be made in the size ofthe forms of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 3 and 5 to 8.
lEach I of the closures herein shown comprlses a cover ortop member of a non-circular wrench-receiving contour which includes a plurality of wrench-receiving ears or lugs, the cover member being provided with a reenforcing flange which may be turned downwardly 'orupwardly as desired at the outer margins of the ears and alongthe outer margin of the cover member intermediate such ears, there being associated with the cover or top member a screw threaded cup shaped member which is adapted to be screwed down into a'suitable screw threaded sput of a container wall.
According to this invention, the form of the cover or topjmember may vary, and likewise the form of its associated screw threaded cup shaped member may; also vary, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
Referring to Figures '1 and 2, the cover or top member-15 is shown as having a noncircular wrench-receiving contour and in cluding a plurality of outwardly projecting ears 16, between which the peripheral margin of the-cover member is curved, such curved portions lying on a circle struck from the center ofthe top member. In order to strengthen the cover or top member 15 including the outwardly projecting ears 16, such cover is provided with a continuous reenforcing flange 17, which is'formed at the outer edge of the top member intermediate the ears 16 thereof and about the outer margin of-suchears'. This re-enforcing flange 17, materially re-e'nforces the top member 15 against buckling or "other distortions in screwing the closure down into sealing engagement on a container, and particularly re-e'nforces the cars 16 against bending stresses or-other forces, as when a wrench is applied to the closure intermediate such'e ars for screwing the closure down into sealing position or as when a hammer is employed to impart a releasing impact to the ears for.
. with reference to the outside diameter of the cup-shaped member 18, as to snugly receive the bottom of the cup-shaped member and facilitate centering of the cup-shaped member with respect to the top member during assembling. This cup-shaped member 18 is attached to the cover member 15 by electrically welding its bottom thereto at a suitable number of points 20, herein shown as three. If more than one weld is employed, the bottom of the cup shaped member is struck up at a number of points, corresponding to the number of welds desired, priorto welding, so as to provide a plurality of projections which serve to concentrate the welding current atthe points of connection, as willbe readily understood, such projections being herein omitted from the drawings inasmuch as they disappear or flatten out due to their heated condition at the instant of welding.
Referringto Figure 3, the construction is the same as that of Figures 1 and 2 except the outer margin of the top member 15 in termediate the outwardly projecting ears 16 are bent down along straight rather than curved lines, thus forming straight sides 23, intermediate the ears 16, which sides are adapted for the reception of a wrench to be used in screwing the closure into and'out of sealing position. The re-enforcing flange 17 in this form of the invention, as in the form of closure shown in Figures 1 and 2, serves to strengthen the top member 15 and the ears 16 which form a part of that member. The
screw threaded cup-shaped member 18 is located within a central depression 19 formed in the top member 15, as described in connection with the form of invention shown in Figures 1 and 2, and may be connected to the top member by welding its bottom thereto at a single point shown at 24 or at a plurality of points as shown at20 in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring to Figure 4, the construction is the same as that of Figure 3 except that the top member 15 is larger and is formed with a greater number of straight sides 23, herein shown as six in number, and with a greater number ofears 16, herein also shown as siX in number. In this form of the invention, the screw threaded member 18 is idenp j member 150 IS employed which is ldentical tical with the screw threaded members 18 and 18 except as to size, and may be attached by welding its bottomto the top member 15 within the central depression 19 at a plurality of points 20 as described in connection with the form of invention shown in Figures 1 and 2.
Referring to Figure 5, the top member 15a may have the contour shown in Figures 1, 3 or 41, and diifers from any one of such forms only in that its re-enforcing flange 17 a is turned upwardly instead of downwardly. It will beunderstood that the cup-shaped member 18a, is positioned within-in a central depression 19a formed in the top member 15a, and is there welded to such top member at a plurality of points as described in connection with Figures 1 and 2, or at a single point described in connection with the form of invention shown in Figure 3.
In the closure shown in Figures 6 and 7, the top member 155 is preferably formed with a square central wrench-receiving opening 26 about which preferably depends a relatively narrow skirt 2], which serves to reenforce the top member 155 in the vicinity of its opening against tortional strains when a; wrench of suitable deslgn is introduced into the opening 26 and employed to screw the closure into and out of sealing position. The top member 15?) isprovided with a re-enforcing flange 17 Z) which serves to strengthen i 7,
the top .member including its wrench receiving ears 16?), as above described. In the present form of the invention, a screw threaded cup-shaped member 29 is'employed,
which is provided at its open end with an outwardly projecting I gasket supporting flange 30 which is secured to the cover member 156 by welding at spaced points as shown at 31. This gasket supporting flange 30 is preferably provided on its periphery with a plurality of projections 32 which project into the spaces afl'orded between portions of the re-enforcing flange. 17 b at opposite sides of the ears 16b and there established an interlocking engagement between the flange30 1 of the cup-shaped member 29 and its associated top member 15?), the projections 32 being relatively short so as to extend'only a short distance into the ears 16b. This interlocking engagement between the gasket sup-' porting flange 30 and the re-enforcing flange l'Zb facilitates centering of the top member 15,?) and the cup-shaped member29'preparatory to welding the gasket supporting flange to such top member and, after such welding,
the gasket supporting flange 30 serves to reenforce the flange 17'?) against bend ng or distortion, whenit is subjected to forces incident to the use of awrench or other tool in screwing the closure into or removing it from a sput or fitting. p
In the closure shown in Figure 8, a top with the top member 151) above described except as-to contour, and in this respect it resembles the topmember 15 shown in Figure The top 'member 150- is provided with a re-enforcing flange. lz'lcyhaving a plurality of straight side portions 23,
herein shown as four in number, and with a 7 corresponding number of cars 160. The screw threaded cup shaped member 29, is identical with the cup shaped member 29 shown in Figures 6 and 7 except that the peripheral contour of its gasket supporting flange 30- conforms to the inner walls of the straight side portions 23 of the re-enforcing flange 17c and thereby establishes an interlocking and reinforcing engagement of the cup shaped member 29' with the top member 150, which members are permanently connected together by welding at a plurality of points, as shown at 31. As in Figures 6 and 7, the central wrench receivingopening '26 of the top member 150 leads into the cup shaped member 29 and is adapted for the reception of a suitable wrench to be used in screwing the closure into and out of sealing position, it being understood that the wrench receiving opening 26' may be re-enforced by a depending skirt 27 corresponding to the re-enforcing skirt 27 shown in Figure 7.
In the closure shown in Figure 9, a top member 15d is employed which has the outer contour of the top member 15 of Figure at and is formed with a central wrench receiving opening 26 which as in Figures 6 to 8 is re-enforced by a depending re-enforcing skirt 27". The screw threaded cup shaped member 29 in the present instance also resembles the screw threaded cup shaped member :29 shown in Figure 7,except that its gasket supporting flange 30 is so shaped as to present a plurality of straight edges which conform to and engage the inner walls of the straight side portions 23 of the re-enforcing-flange 17d which servesto re-enforce the top member 15d including its ears 16d. By reason of the engagement of the gasket supporting flange 30" with the straight sided portions 23 of the re-enforcing flange 17d, an interlocking and reinforcing connection is established between the cup shaped member 29 and its. associated top member 15d which is welded to the gasket supporting flange at a plurality of points as shown at 81.
In each form of the invention herein shown, a suitable gasket 35 (Figures 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7) may be employed. This gasket will be backed up, in the forms of the invention shown in Figures 1 to 5 inclusive, by the respective top. members 15, 15, 15 and 15a; and in the forms of the invention shown in Figures 6 to 9 inclusive, this gasket 35 will be backed up by the respective gasket supporting flanges 30, 30 and. 30", the gasket being in all instances forced into intimate engagement with a suitable gasket seat on the container sput (not shown), whereby an adequate seal may be provided for the container with which the closures are employed.
In order that a suitable Sealing wire may be employed in connection with the several forms ofclosures, the earsthereo'f are provided with perforations 40 through which the sealing wires, not shown, may be threaded, such wires being also suitably attached or anchored to the container walls according to usual practice.
