Attachments which consist of a frame car ricd at one end by the differential housing of a standard tractor and at the other end by the forwardly shifted front axle assembly of the tractor, and which have a tool mounting located in an intermediate position, are
in common use for performing such operations as scarificing, grading, etc. In such machines, the forewheels always precede the tool and the necessary superposed'tool" o thrusting weight is obtained by providing a comparatively heavy and therefore expensive foreframe which, of course, adds to the cost of the machine. In addition, the general arrangement of such attachments may be objectionable when performing certam classes of work, and the relative posi-v tions of the steering wheels and tool are obviously disadvantageous when the machineis being employed for suchv purposes as ditch filling, snow plowing, and the like.
In order to obviate confusion of terms during the course of this description and in its appended claims, the rearwheels of the standard .tractor employed.in-;my invention which are mounted on the drive shafts extending from the differential housing will be designated as the drive wheels of such tractor, and the wheels which are mounted on the front axle of such tractor 40 will be designated as the steering wheels. The'terms forwardly and rearwardly as employed in this description and in the appended claims will have reference to the respective ends of the implement carrying frame only, and that end of thetractor which is normally itsfront end will be designated as its steering end, and that end of the tractor which is normally called its rear end will be designated as its driving chine illustrated in Fig. 1.

My invention, with the object of providmg a more generally satisfactory tool carrymg attachment for use in combination with standard tractors, contemplates an arrangement consisting of a tool supporting'framework adapted to have its. rear end carried by the steering wheels'of the tractor and its forward end mounted on the tractors differential housing, the tool being positioned at the'forward end of the implement-carrying frame and proximate to the driving wheels of such tractor in order to afford adequate weight for resisting vertical and lateral tool thrust and the machine as a whole being adapted for travelling in a direction which would be effected by having "such tractor operate in normal reverse gear.
In this form of construction, the tool al- "waysprecedes the driving wheels, and the tractors normal weight is employed to directly counteract and oppose tool thrust as well as to positively hold such tool in the selected operating position. These features are particularly useful in machines intended for heavy work, the practically direct connection between the tractors differential housing and the tool permitting a maximum pushing effort without necessitating a very elaborate frame Work, and the'position of the tool adapting the machine to functions which can not be conveniently effected by attachments in whichthe tool is carried rearwardly of the steering wheels and fore carriage. To the accomplishment of the foregoing and related ends, said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of variousmechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.

Towards their rearward ends, the frame members 1 converge and are adapted to form a mounting for the steering wheel tractor axle 5, such axle together with its wheels and steering mechanism having been shifted from its normal position and replaced by a suitable yoke 6 which is secured to the frame members.
Intermediate the rear steering wheels 7 and the steering end of the tractor, suitable control apparatus and a station for the operator are provided; such station, if desired,
being covered by a protective top. The
steering gear consists of a wheel 8 which, through suitable mechanism enclosed by the casing 9, is adapted to operate an arm 10, this arm connecting with a rod 11 which is attached to a bell crank 12 mounted on one of the wheel spindles, a transverse tie rod 13 serving to interconnect the wheels in the usual manner. The steering gear is desirably so arranged that the normal wheel movements will produce the normal changes in the direction of travel; in other words, clockwise turning of the steering wheel 8 (Fig. 2) will rotate the wheels 7 in a counterclockwise direction, but the direction of mo.- tion of the machine as a whole will be as usual, i. e., to the right. Similarly, counterclockwise turning of the wheel 8 will cause the machine to proceed to the left although the wheels 7 will, of course, be turned in a clockwise direction.
In a position approximately above the differential housing 4, the frame members 1 are provided with a transverse part 14 which is braced by the inwardly extending pieces 15 and centrally carries an oscillatable thrust sleeve 16. The sleeve 16 is adapted to receive one end of a shaft 17 which has a collar 18 and is preferably encircled by a compression spring 19, this spring bearing against the outer of the two eye members attached to a beam 20 and forming with the shaft 17 and the collar 18 (which in addition to forming a bracing for the spring also prevents separation) a yieldable connection between such beam 20 and the sleeve 16. At its forward end, the beam 20 carries a revoluble circle 21 which, as best shown in Fig. 2, is provided with depending arms 22 and is rearwardly guided by a part 23. The circle 21 may be revolved around its center 24 and locked in any selected position by a pin 25, this pin being adpated for reciprocation in an opening 26 provided in its mounting 27 and having a lower extremity for engaging in any one of an arcuate series of holes formed in the circle rim. A rod 28 which is desirably extended back to the operators station is connected with a lever 29 arranged for manipulating the pin 25 when changing the circle setting.
Secured to the forward end of the beam 20 is a transverse bar 30 whose projecting ends are universely connected to the hanging screws 31 by couplings 32 which have ball shaped extremities positioned within the boxes 33. The upper portions of the screws 31 are mounted in nuts 34 which may be revolved by gears 35 meshing with similar gears 36, the former constituting part of the nuts 34 and the latter formed on shafts which extend through one of the gudgeons 37 and connect with shafts 38 adapted to be revolved by hand wheels 39 from the operators station. The nuts 34 and the gears 36 are enclosed by casings 40 which have gudgeons 37 journalled in the ends of the forks 41, such forks being revolubly mounted on the ends of a shaft 42 which is supported by brackets 43 attached to the ends of the frame members 1. Due to the fact that the handwheels 39 are most conveniently revolved in opposite directions when raising or lowering the scraper blade 44 or other tool,
one of the nuts 34 is desirably reversed so thatits gear 35 meshes with the top instead of the bottom of the gear 36, this permitting of the most convenient hand wheel motion and yet simultaneously raising or lowering both ends of the blade in the desired manner. The blade 44 may be removably and reversably attached to the moldboard 45 which is pivoted to the arms 22 as at 46 and adjustably attached as at 47 When equipping a tractor with the attachment provided by this invention the usual transmission or differential gearing may be reversed so that the three ordinarily provided variations in ratio will be available when the tractor is moving in a direction opposite to its normal forward direction, and the one normal reverse speed available for motion in a direction opposite to that in which said speed is normally effective. In other words, the normal forward direction of travel of the tractor becomes the reverse direction, and the normal reverse direction becomes the forward direction.
From the above description and explanation, it will be apparent that my invention provides a comparatively simple attachment for the purpose specified; a machine which can be inexpensively constructed from a standard tractor and which is adapted for performing numerous operations; a design which employs the normal tractor weight to the best advantage; and which, in addition to its other desirable features, makes conversion of the standard tractor to a more versatile machine, a relatively easy matter to accomplish. It will be understood that with appropriate modifications in dimensions my improved attachment can be readily adapted to use in combination with differently constructed tractors, and that the forwardly positioned thrust members are suitable for many purposes, including the moving of a great variety of tools, implements, etc. It will also be understood that while ny invention has been described as an attachment, it may be embodied in a special machine and its different features retained in substantially their described form, these presenting the advantages explained regardless of whether the power unit is a standard tractor or an integral part of the machine.
Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any of the following. claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a standard tractor having its steering wheel assembly removed and the directional effectiveness of its drive gearing reversed, of spaced frame members on opposite sides of said tractor extending longitudinally therefrom at both ends, steering wheels carried by one end of said frame members, and a thrust tool carried by the other end of said frame members, said thrust tool adjacent the driving wheels of said tractor.
2. The combination with a standard tractor having its steering wheel assembly removed and the directional effectiveness of its drive gearing reversed, of spaced frame members on opposite sides of said tractor extending longitudinally therefrom at both ends and secured to the driving axle of said tractor, steering wheels carried by one end of said frame members, and a thrust tool carried by the other end of said frame members, said thrust tool adjacent the driving Wheels of said tractor.
3. The combination with a standard tractor having its steering wheel assembly removed and the directional effectiveness of its drive gearing reversed, of spaced frame members on opposite sides of said tractor extending longitudinally therefrom at both ends, secured to the driving axle housing of said tractor and supporting the steering end thereof, steering wheels carried by one end of said frame members, and a thrust tool carried by the other end of said frame members, said thrust tool adjacent the driving wheels of said tractor.
4. The combination with a standard tractor having its steering wheel assembly removed and the directional effectiveness of its drive gearing reversed; of spaced frame members; and means supporting a thrust tool adjacent the other end of said frame members and adjacent the driving wheels of said tractor.
5. The combination with a standard tractor having its steering wheel assembly removed and the directional effectiveness of its drive gearing reversed; of spaced frame members on opposite sides of said tractor, extending longitudinally therefrom at both ends, secured to the frame of the tractor adjacent its driving end, and supporting said tractor adjacent its steering end; steering wheels carried by one end of said frame members; and means supporting a thrust tool adjacent the other end of said frame members and adjacent the driving wheels of said tractor, said thrust tool supporting means including a vertically adjustable frame suspended from adjacent the end of said side frame members, and oscillatably supported by such frame members adjacent the driving axle of said tractor.

7. The combination with a standard tractor having its steering wheel assembly removed and the directional effectiveness of its drive gearing'reversed; of spaced frame members on opposite sides of said tractor, extending longitudinally therefrom at both ends, secured to the frame of the tractor adjacent its driving end, and supporting said tractor adjacent its steering end; steering wheels carried by one end of said frame members; and means supporting a thrust tool adjacent the other end of said frame members and adjacent the driving wheels of said tractor, said thrust tool supporting means including a frame piv'otally supported at one end intermediately of said side frames ported frame.
