IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,898, dated September 5, 1876 application filed May 8, i876.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES W. BAKER, of Bentonsport, in the county of Van Buren and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements on Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a gate moving upon rollers and the adjoining fence-panel by which it is supported, so as to prevent the outer end of the gate from sagging down, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.

In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertaius to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation,referring to the annexed drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a front elevation of my gate, and Fig. 2 is a section through the line a; 00, Fig. 1.

A A represent the upright posts, and B B the boards of the fence-panel adjoining to and supporting the gate. The gate iscomposed of a series of boards, 0 0, connected at their ends by upright boards D, and suitably braced. Upon the inner end of the gate is fastened a casting, E, with a projecting stud, a, upon which is placed a flanged roller, G, and this roller fits between the two boards B B of the fence-panel. On the post Ais secured a similar casting, with stud, upon which is placed a similar flanged wheel, G, and this wheel fits between the two boards'O C of the gate.

The wheels G G are held upon their respective studs by means of pins 1) passing through the ends of the studs.

The gateis thus supported by the two rollers G G, and in moving the gate back and forth the gate works 'on the roller 'G, and the roller G Works on the boards B B of the fence. These boards B B of the fence are slightly inclined downward toward the gate, and the boards O O of the gate are slightly inclined in the opposite direction. The result of this inclination of said boards is, that as the gate closes the outer end thereof will be slightly elevated, and cannot sag down the roller G acting as a fulcrum, upon which the gate tilts to the extent of the inclination of the boards B and O.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The combination, with a gate having two inclined boards, 0 G, and a fencepanel having two boards, B B, inclined in the opposite direction, of the flanged roller G, mounted on the gate, and fitting between the boards B B, and the flanged roller G, mounted on the fence-post, and fitting between the boards 0 6, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
