WILLIAM H.- OPLINGER AND THOMAS WHALEY, OF WADSWORTH, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT lN STOVE-PIPE COLLARS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,864, dated September 5, 1876; application filed February 17, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it-known that we, WILLIAM H. OP- LINGER and THOMAS WHALEY, of Wadsworth, in the county of Medina and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Pipe Collars and Flue- Oovers, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists of certain improvements in stove-pipe collars and flue-covers, which are described and claimed as follows:
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a section through a wall and flue, showing a section of a stove-pipe therein and the improved stove-pipe collar, secured to the walls of the flue, also in section. Fig. 2 is a plan of the inside of the collar. The remaining figures illustrate details hereinafter described.
In these figures, A is any wall or floor having a stove-pipe flue passing through it. B is a stove-pipe, shown in longitudinalsection. C is the stove-pipe collar, provided with the ratchet-arms D D. The said arms are provided at their inner ends with sliding catches E E, and near their outer ends with ofl'se'ts F F, and at their outer ends with adjustingnuts G G.
Upon the inside of the collar 0 is a haltring, H, hinged thereto by a pin at h. Near the center of this halfcollar or ring is a slot, K, in which through the collar 0, from its outside, is inserted a cam, L, attached to a lever, M, which lever is operated by hand on the outside of the collar (3, and may be provided with a rack, N, on the said collar, in the teeth of which rack itmay be held at any desired point.
The sliding catches E E are formed as shown in the drawing, and their operation upon the racks at the inner ends of the arms D D is obvious.
The method of applying this collar 0 can now be easily understood, and is as follows: The said collar being inserted in the linethe approximate depth of flue being first as-' certained-the catches E E are adjusted accordingly upon the ratchet ends of the arms D D. The adjusting-nuts G G are then screwedup, which operation draws the collar 0 close up to the face of the wall at the edge of the flue. The said collar is thus clamped between the nuts G G and the sliding catches E E. The stove-pipe is then inserted in the flue through the collar C.
In order to hold the stove-pipe firmly in the flue, and also to prevent it from rattling, the lever M is turned upon its rackN so that the cam L, working in the slot K, forces the half-collar H firmly against the pipe and securely jams it against the metal surrounding it.
When the stove-pipe is withdrawn from the flue, and it is desired to close the flue by a cap or cover, any simple plate-cover may be selected, which, being punched with two holes, may be placed upon the outer ends of the arms D D after removing the adjustingnuts .G G therefrom. Upon readjusting the said nuts close up to the cover the flue will be neatly and securely closed. The letter 0 indicates such cover, and the method of securing it in the place of the stove-pipe when removed.
H-aving thus fully described this improved stove-pipe collar and flue-cover as ofour invention, we claim- 1. A stove-pipe collar, 0, provided with ratchet-arms D D, and sliding catches E E, whereby said collar is secured around a stovepipe in the flue thereof, substantially in the manner hereinbefore set forth.
2. The combination, with the stove-pipe collar 0, of the half-collar H, and cam L, substantially in the manner hereinbefore described, for thepurpose set forth.
3. The combination of the lever M, provided with a cam, L, with the rack N secured to the collar 0, whereby said lever is clamped in any desired position, for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the collar (J, of any suitable detachable flue-cover, secured to said collar by means of the arms D D "and nuts G G, substantially in the manner hereinbefore described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. OPLINGER. THOMAS WHALEY. Witnesses:
