SPINNING TOPS No.181.,.85Z. Patented Sept.6,1876
%QT ?W V Ww H PETERS. PHOTO-LITHOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON. D O.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
ANDREW KERN, OF UTIGA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPINNING-TOPS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 18 L852, dated September 5, 1876; application filed February 28,- 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW KERN, of Utica, Oneida county, New York, have invented a new and Improved Top, of which the following is a specification:
The invention consists of a tubular handle to the upper part of the spindle of'the top, within which the string for spinning the. top is attached to the spindle.
The handle allows the top to be held in the hand after it has been set running to be set down carefully in any required place, and the tubular form of it enables the string to wind on the spindle ready for spinning it again, and so avoids a separate string, which is not always at hand with the top.
Figure l is a top view of my improved top, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the top B, the tubular handle; 0, the
upper spindle, fitted in the handle, so as to revolve freely; and D is the string, which is attached to the spindle within the handle.
The top is held in one hand by the handle, and the string is pulled out by the other, as represented in Fig. 2, and the end of the string is let go at the moment it is pulled out its length, so as to Wind up again, after which or at the same time the top is set down to spin. 7
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The tubular handle B, combined with the top, and the string D, attached to the spindle within said handle, substantially as specified.
ANDREW KERN.
